Scott asked me to build him up something for this weekends race, as he was borrowing one of Howie's hot rods. Similar setup to my car only running the big wheels, and a little more of an anglewinder.

Body is a .020" thick Betta and Classic "Scale" Lola T70. Pretty high quality, I think it turned out looking pretty nice in the bright blue!

Thanks for all the help guys! Jim Difalco suggested a DD304 with an upgraded heatsink and 5 ohm brake. Since the DD304 comes with a 1/32 network he also suggested that I order a 1/24 network. I ordered it all at 1:30 PM last Friday and it showed up yesterday. He knocked it out and shipped it on Saturday! So far I couldn't be more pleased with his service. My understanding is that this is the same controller as the DD281 but with a 5 ohm brake instead of the 3 ohm.  I hope to get to use it soon! I think Stan is getting the same controller.

Very cool dude, you will love it! Even when it felt foreign to me I was still faster with it!

Alright guys. I have ordered the first 2 prototype chassis today. There are still some details to iron out, but I am hoping to have one of them functional by the weekend if all goes according to plan.

Right now it looks like pricing should be pretty good!

That looks SWEEET. Looks very scale to me, and probably a great body for this Category!

It was an awesome race! I finally had a run on Red that didnt suck.

I only got to race with him a couple of times. The first time after seeing I was a newer guy to 1/24th racing, he immediately started to help me out. He wanted to see my cars, gave me some tech tips, and let me drive a couple of his awesome cars to get a feel for how they run. This attitude and excitement to grow and invest in something he loved will not be forgotten.

I am glad I got to meet and run paint with him on a couple of occasions, he will definitely be missed as one of the staple members of the community.

Still a tight battle at the front!

It was some close racing out there. Thanks Al for hosting and to everyone who showed up to play!

Okay, I tend to get in trouble for my remarks here but I only respond to other's posts about rules and what's legal or fair. My two cents is that in every other class at Howie's the cars actually look like a scale size driver could climb in and out and actually fit in the car to drive it. I saw very few cars at the Can-Am race that a driver could fit into. Same goes for tire size. Until the Porsches came along, Can-Am cars ran the biggest tires out there to handle the huge power. The little tires on the front of some of the cars looked weird to me. Even the .9 inch tires for the rear only equate to a real tire less than 22 inches tall. That's a little tire for the rear of a race car from the era. No matter what the outcome on rules, I will do my best to stay out of the way of the fast cars.

I think these are some valid points. The driver interior on my car I believe is quite scale. The wheel and tire size is definitely not, nor will it be for most of the cars. Either the wheel will be to big or the tire will be too small, but if equalizing performance is the goal you can't really mess with the tire minimums.

I think if we can just get rid of the "modified for performance" bodies out there, then it should be all good.

We also just need to accept that this class is the furthest away from every other class run at Rapid. The nature of the cars and body choices are always going to lend to these problems. But I believe Howie is doing the best he can to manage it.

I really like running the Policars, they are challenging, fast, and look pretty cool. But they are highly sensitive to tuning and poor driving so they can be really frustrating when you get it wrong.

Last time out I couldn't drive it to save my life!

I think the "new" policar f1 and NSR coming out might be pretty neat as well. The Scaley cars also work awesome if you allow axle changes and such, our Scaley f1 proxy cars were lapping in the high 6's at Al's and much easier to drive than the Policars!

Pic of real car for reference. I think it is fairly accurately portrayed, except of course the wing being moulding in, instead of an airfoil.

These two pictures illustrate the difference between the "performance" retro version of my body and the "scale version.

Betta and Classic:

The MAC "retro" version.

There are various others out there as well. But again, it seems like if they are advertised as "scale" they are much closer to the real thing. The "retro" and "retro pro" versions are all squashed down and high downforce versions.

I believe Zack's body was the BETTA and CLASSIC 1973 Porsche 917-30.   www.bettaandclassic.com

My understanding is the rules for this class were made to keep the cars representative of the real racing cars, true to Northwest True Scale's mission. With that said it should be noted that just because a car is listed by make and model, depending upon the manufacturers design and interpretation of the car, it may not be suitable for or meet the intent of the class. Many of the cars listed are available in versions that are intended for serious competition with no regard from the manufacturers as to being true to scale. Case in point is the TI22. It is listed as a legal body however, there are versions of the body that have exaggerated nose angles and rear wing configurations. These designs are intended to add aerodynamic benefits to slot cars with little to no emphasis on replicating the actual car. If you adhere strictly to the rules, the only TI22 body that is legal is the True Scale body, and it is no longer available. Personally I like the more realistic bodies for this class and in my opinion I think we should update the list of legal bodies before the next racing season for these cars.

Bill, you are correct on my body choice. It is .010", but can be ordered in .020" as well.  I chose it because it did seem to be the best "scale" body available for this class. The front is still under 3" on my car to get the wheels inside the fenders, but the rear is 3.250. I think it is probably the best body on the current list of approved cars, as it was also the best Can Am car in 1973!

I agree with bill that the cars should represent realistic shapes. If you look at other versions of my car the air intakes are basically none existent in an attempt to fill the rear wing.

I ordered a few more bodies to try and build for other people. It looks like for the most part if they have "scale" in the description they look pretty realistic. But it will be hard to tell until I get them here.

That was a great time! Thanks everyone and sorry for all the wrecks! Those cars are just a little too fast for me

Tom, if we work on getting your car a little easier to drive you will have a much better time. A car that tips easily is never good when you are starting out.

Don't get discouraged. If you show up early next time we can play with it, I also have a backup can am car you can run anytime!

Looking forward to next time!

Thanks Dennis, it is an easy car to drive fast!

Obviously the potential is there for a flexi chassis'd car, just have to mind the details.

Was a fun race, thanks for coming down!

These just became available from a HRW forum member.

This chassis kit uses steel front and rear sections, that are interlocking so they can be soldered perfectly square everytime. For those of you wanting to get going putting nice chassis's under your older cars, these are going to be sweet.

This is the same chassis kit the ALS had under his Corvette we raced last night. Which ended up spanking the production field!

Hey guys,

I have been testing this product for the last couple of months. They are just not becoming available for purchase. I hope that Alan @ 132slotcar.us will have them on his site soon, as he is also carrying the new line of Mr. Slotcar Patriot chassis's.

They can be used to dampen the pod, with either one under, or one on top and on the bottom of the pod connect. Using two, along with a through bolt and a nyloc is a great way to change the tension on the pod!

I also have been using them on almost all of my body posts. Just trim .5mm off the post, glue one of these on and you are good to go!

What is the benefit?

1- Decreased vibrations in the drivetrain and the body will help create grip, and the car will move more freely.

2-It makes them quiet and smooth!

Many of the top plastic and brass car builders have been using something similar for the last couple years, this is just the first commercially available option!

I will probably take close to 2 hours with many cars. The field is 21 if I remember correctly.

I should be over there around 4:30 this afternoon to start running laps to get the track cleaned up.

PLEASE ONLY RUN RUBBER TIRES FOR PRACTICE BEFORE THE RACE! The urethanes greatly compromise the grip, if there is time after you can give them a go then!

Thanks for the help guys!

is there I height limit? if so is it measured from the ground to  highest part of the roof or from bottom of the chassis to top of roof?   thanks.

The way the rules read, you can't cut the body at all so I wouldn't think there is a specified height. It is going to be based solely off the body you choose.

Bob can correct me if I am wrong.

We had a great time on Saturday getting some cars together for the early modified class that we are racing for the first time this season on Saturday.

Bart made great progress on his blue Chevy, and Tom and Lance turned out some cool looking fords! Howie should be able to post pics of lance's ride!

Howie prepped a lot of the parts which helped a ton, and we had parts on hand to build up to five cars. All in all I think it was a great experience for everyone. I enjoyed watching them come together!
