I do NOT agree. So, if someone wants to win a Classic Sports car or CanAm race they would need to have a Thunderslot in order to have a shot? They are going to dominate from what I've seen and it would make it a one car class which equals: BORING.
Classics II has the 18k and 8mm tire rules for podded chassis entries. I would be in favor of anyone appropriately setting up a Thunderslot T-70 Spider (I don't think the coupe was USRRC eligible) and seeing how it ran.
Can Am also has motor limits, and I believe only the spider was eligible in the series. If someone wants to prep one which fits the rules (23k motor), I am personally fine with it. If it's truly that dominant, it is more of a challenge to build something which competes against it.
Also, maybe Greg just got a really good one and found a magic combination with tuning it. I would be willing to run my Slot.It McLaren against his T-Slot T-70.
I just don't think a $90.00 starting/entry point is conducive to getting and keeping new people involved. Greg's and Monte's are both coupes so you are comparing apples and oranges and all the print I've seen is that they all very quick so Greg's is not an anomaly. The Classic Sports Car class rules need some restructuring and limiting all entries to 1964 and prior would be a good start. After that the tire and horsepower wars began transforming production based sports cars into purpose built racing machines altering racing for ever. It's time we make some adjustments to our classes to reflect this. I submit that we drop 18k motors from classic sports cars and limit them to 14k and 7mm tires. We could continue with the pod and non-pod divisions to help keep things compatible with the cars in use. I further submit that we should split the GT class into Modern and shall we say Vintage divisions. The Vintage division could cover the years 1965-1990 or ? The vintage division could serve as the place where we could run the ThunderSlot's, NSR's, Al's Greenwood Vette and the like with some sort of motor limit. (18-20k?) and the Modern division still kind of a catch all for everything else. These changes would better reflect racing history and mirror the increasing speeds achieved as time marched on, better aligning our classes to reality without banning certain brands or individuals creations.
That sounds good to me Rico. I have also thought for quite sometime that our classes need some restructuring. The classes as written were good starting points points for our group, but just like the cars we're racing our group has evolved. We still need to be mindful of those just getting started, but at the same time we need better structured rules for the more skilled racers and builders. With some thought and discussion I know both goals can be met! We need to hear from the newer racers as well! Jeff Burns posted some good points, and I know Jeff and Amy probably have some good perspective having worked their way up from new comer status. Fernando has also had some good comments.
I just don't think a $90.00 starting/entry point is conducive to getting and keeping new people involved.
With 30s of Googling...
T-Slot: $60 white kit/$75 liveried
NSR: $53-$65 white kit/$60-$80 liveried
Full disclosure is that those are ebay auctions and need to add shipping, but at ~$10, that's still Slot.It money and shouldn't be any more of a barrier than any other brand for someone wanting to come out and play. I say we throw them in the mix where appropriate.
Regarding the class restructure, I also like it and agree that we shouldn't ban any particular brands. Your Classics proposal sounds like it aligns with IPS regs with the exception of allowing any driveline configuration (but I haven't read them in a while):
...limiting all entries to [pre-]1964 and... to 14k [motors] and 7mm tires... with the pod and non-pod divisions
I like it with one motor and tire spec between both divisions and 14k is probably much more reasonable for cars of that era.
For the GT class, I am on board with the concept of splitting the eras:
I further submit that we should split the GT class into Modern and shall we say Vintage divisions. The Vintage division could cover the years 1965-1990 or ? The vintage division could serve as the place where we could run the ThunderSlot's, NSR's, Al's Greenwood Vette and the like with some sort of motor limit. (18-20k?) and the Modern division still kind of a catch all for everything else.
I would advocate the split somewhere along the lines of pre- and post- ground effects adoption, possibly drawing the line at pre- and post-Grp C (1982). Ideally, they should probably be lumped into 15yr-ish buckets ('65-'80, '81-'95, '96-present?) but I don't want to make this another F1 class... If we're going to down motor them, I'd say we should be certain that it'd make a difference. Based on that, I'd personally lean more toward the 18k than 20k.
I would like to find a way to get the modern LMP spyders into the GT mix (no roof though). I have a Ninco BMW LMR and I've stared at the new Slot.It Audi R8's and keep wanting to pick one up, but we have no class in which to race them. Would be nice to toss them in too.
The only downside I see to this restructure would be that for the Classic and Vintage GT, it seems like it's going to require a specific build- i.e. is there an RTR offering with appropriate motor and tire spec? With Classics, you could buy a Ninco Vette or Jag and be competitive (at least you used to be able to...). Is there anything out there which fits the bill or will anything run in these two classes need to have at least a new motor installed and possibly new wheels/tires?
The NASTE veterans are likely to not have any issue with this (I certainly don't), but new arrivals may need a bit of coaching and time in the barrel to understand the nuances of why the classes are structured as they are and why they'll need to make some changes to get a compliant class entry.
Chris
One more comment before I start working on packing and moving more crap which is pretty much my all consuming life now!
When it comes to the split classes, it is a nightmare from a scoring standpoint trying to keep track of who's in which class and their overall as well as divisional finish. From an administrative or record keeping standpoint I would race the classes/divisions individually. If there is no concern or interest in detailed finish results, then who cares run 'em all together.
He can confirm but I believe Rico's proposal was to consider the 2 GT classes independently and run them as such. I agree that we may have complicated things beyond what's necessary with where we went in the F1 class and I don't advocate going there with these classes either.

Looks like you guys had some close racing!
Thanks for hosting Al, I had a most enjoyable evening.
Thanks Al, that was some very good racing.
In GT3 accept for Rico who was in a race all by himself, 2 thru 4 were each a tenth apart.
I got my first ever win in Trans Am, again just by one tenth.
DOC, that Ford/Porsche proxy we talked about, the cars are due in Mass. by October 1st.
Info I received from Al regarding the classes for the next two Odd Thursday Night races:
F1 and GT3 on 8/17 and Classic Sport Cars and CanAm on 8/31
New home stuff is dragging. Still no floors installed so no progress on getting settled. This sucks!

That was interesting, that is my best finish ever in GT and I was using my Stock Fly 906 Porsche with original 18K motor. I used the same car in the LeMans class but ran 3.5 fewer laps. Go figure.
Now I don't know Doc. I do know that I came home and replaced the NSR with a Piranha. I during practice I found the NSR a little twitchy coming out of the corners, not a good thing in a proxy car.

Look at those numbers for BRM, 1/10 each between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. That's some close racing on those big cars.
I did it again, I ran more laps with my stock Fly in LeMans than I did with my Slot it 956 in GT. I may never figure that class out. However that is a smooth running Fly.
