Last Sunday at Monte's digital enduro we held a meeting to discuss the NASTE 2012 racing season. We decided on 12 race dates, and so far I have 7 different tracks on the list for next season, Monte's 1/32 analog & digital tracks, Jeff's 1/24 track, Larry's 1/24 track, Rico's 1/32 track, and Randy's 1/32 track, for a total of 6 tracks. And, as a surprise Tony from Fantasy World Hobbies said they would like to host a NASTE race in Seattle on their 1/32 track! There is also a possibility 4 more tracks may be added to the list.

So here are the race dates: Race #1 Sept.17, #2 Oct.8, #3 Oct.29 (Halloween Race - non-points and reserved for Jeff's Hemi Heights Raceway Park), #4 Nov.19, #5 Dec.10, #6 Jan.7, #7 Jan.28, #8 Feb.18, #9 Mar.10, #10 Mar.31 (tentative - provided it does not conflict with the Portland Swap Meet), #11 Apr.21, #12 May12.

I will be emailing the dates to the track owners for them to select the date they would like to host their race. As soon as we have the commitments I will post the schedule. Get ready for a great season!   -------------------Bill

So, I finally got around to assembling my Ninco Ferrari 360 Pro Race Kit. I upgraded the rear axle, gears, and rear wheels to Slot.It parts (my personal opinion is; Ninco parts are junk - very nice bodies and motors, but everything else is pretty much junk). Anyway, I get it all done, broken in on my bench top power supply, and out to Monte's I go for testing. Ran a few laps with my Ninco Porsche 997 (which has upgraded NSR parts - even better) to get a baseline for performance measurement. Onto the track goes the Ferrari, things are looking promising. Lap times are very close to the Porsche and the Porsche is much more sorted out. Then on about lap 7 or 8, out of the last corner and onto the front straight, halfway down the straight, clunk, and all stop. Hmmm, looks to be setting kinda weird, not quite level. Yup it's broke, back in the box and transported home.

This evening I tore it down. Both rear axle carrier uprights were broken, blown clear out. Monte told me this was a common problem with the clear lexan plastic chassis. He said they need to be braced before you even try to run them. Well now I'm in repair mode. My plan is to do the same type of repair I made a couple years ago to my Scalextric A1 GP car that suffered from a similar problem. I will use brass tubing epoxied in place as a bearing carrier for the rear axle. I will also brace the back of the chassis as Monte suggested so I don't break anything else!   --------------Bill

I got this email back from Beau. He is in the process of trying to get signed up here to post.

Rico's question about the chassis--- the chassis I used was a Scholer which is the same as the GT1 chassis but one size smaller. It's called the Tiger. The middle size of the three available at Professor Motor. The rules allow for any chassis to be used, production, production modified, or scatchbuilt, inline or anglewind as long as the tire dimensions are adhered to. Flexi chassis are fine but will need a little modification to obtain the desired ground clearance with the True Scale wheel size. The idea for the chassis rules was to allow as much creativity as possible for people to build that better mouse trap. The year span for the bodies is intended for three different classes that we can run with this rules package. 1) Early production sports cars '57 to around '65. 2) CanAm '66 to '72. I chose '72 mainly because of the lack of availability of bodies between '73 and '77 in the thicker .020-.030 PETG. This lets us run a variety of cars from different eras by simply changing the body. The first bodies we'll use are the CanAm '66 to '72. I realize this may all be a bit confusing, but I figured we could fine tune the rules after seeing how much interest it would receive. Looks like it might be a popular class.   --------------Beau

Howie & Beau, I'm looking for the PETG bodies but having trouble finding them. I looked on the True Scale Products site, but only lexan bodies were listed from what I could see. Also I could not find Tom Anderson VSC on a Google search. Can you help me out? Thanks   ------------------Bill

Maybe some clarification is in order.....
From the onset this track building project was never an endeavor to get 'er done as quick as I can, with the goal of racing on it as soon as possible. I started this track with the enjoyment of the build being the goal. I do not typically start a project with a defined plan, whether it be building a car or a track. This project is no different. I am trying different build methods, designs, and materials, some of which I have not experimented with before. I started with an idea in my head, and have adjusted, changed, and re-designed as I have gone along. Although it has been an enjoyable process it has added additional time and work to the project. I know from an onlookers persepective the question may be "what is taking so long?" From my perspective I'm just having a good time. This is a big track and I'm building it for me, the way I want it, and built as well as I can possibly build it - with no regrets, and nothing I want to re-do at a later date. I have ideas for scenery and details, but I have no plans I'm working off of, so it's just kinda "here's where I'm at, now how do I make this work?" Again it's fun, but also challenging and time consuming to design as you go. At this point in the build I want to get the basic scenery structure completed before I have the track up and running. I don't want to be crawling all over the completed track surface trying to do basic construction work and plastering. Once the track is in operation I just want to be able to work on the scenery details as I have time, with the major construction all completed. So in a nut shell am I slow? YUP, but I'm having a good time with it!   --------------------Bill

Hey Jack, Longest build ever?...................probably not for me! Only thing holding it up is my available time to commit to this project. Too much other B.S. (like work!). Actually the Bondo parts go really quick, even without your heat chamber!!! Hoping to have it up and running by November.  I probably won't have it completely done...............actually it may never be completely done!!!!   ---------Bill

Update.................

http://www.naste.org/members/bill/IMG_0502.jpg

More plasterin'....................but there will be two removable pieces to allow for turn marshals on the inside of the upper turns.................that's the current plan anyway..................

Got a little more plasterin' done..................

Same to the Locati's !

Busy when I get a chance to get out there on it, busy with other stuff when I don't!

Lap lengths are; 84 feet 7 1/4 inches, 84 feet 7 7/8 inches, and 84 feet 8 1/4 inches...........

I'm hoping to have a running track by November................

Thanks Monte.

Mulch huh...........Since you're experienced, wanna help me finish spreading what's left of the bark dust I have in my trailer???

-------------------Bill

I updated the photo gallery of my track build. Take a look under "Slot-Tech", and click on the "NEW Routed Track at TooBad Motorplex". I added about 30 photos to bring everyone up to speed on my progress.

Setting aside time to work on my track is my biggest challenge anymore. I have decided to rough in the scenery work before I paint the surface, tape and wire the track. Unfortunately this delays the racing, but I think it will be worth it in the end....................

This is a big project, and I am in no hurry.    ---------------------Bill

Sorry I couldn't make it Smooth. Sounds like it was another great event!   ----------------------Bill

I'm using cardboard to make some patterns. I transfer the shape onto the white covered fiberboard to make the retailing walls, and the raised "concrete sidewalk" type pieces under the overpass.
