We brought in the new year on this odd Thursday night with some exciting racing action! Eight of us started 2015 with three rounds of slot car racing. Bryan Dickerson scored his second Odd Thursday win in the GT Class. Greg Petrolati came home the winner in the Trans Am Class, with Bryan Trachsel second, new comer Jeff Fields placing third, and Dennis Hart in fourth. The BRM race was a typical BRM barn burner, and I do believe I (Bill) scored the most nerfs!
Here's the results:
Trans Am Class:
1st Greg Petrolati 51.1 laps
2nd Bryan Trachsel 50.2
3rd Jeff Fields 50.1
4th Bill Bostic 49.4
5th Terry Abbott 49.0
6th Bryan Dickerson 48.9
7th Dennis Hart 46.8
8th Mitch Brooks 41.1
GT Class:
1st Bryan Dickerson 56.1 laps
2nd Bill Bostic 55.5
3rd Bryan Trachsel 55.2
4th Dennis Hart 52.8
5th Terry Abbott 51.5
6th Greg Petrolati 49.5
7th Jeff Fields 48.0
8th Nitch Brooks 47.7
BRM Porsche 962 Class:
1st Bill Bostic 58.5 laps
2nd Bryan Dickerson 53.2
3rd Greg Petrolati 52.8
4th Dennis Hart 50.2
5th Mitch Brooks 47.7
6th Jeff Fields 42.3

Last one to roll off the bench. My race winning Scalextric vintage F1 Eagle went to a new owner. I had such good luck with that car I decided to pick up another Eagle to replace it. With this one I decided to add some decals to the body so I could tell it apart from the other popular Eagle entries. This one, like my first one, got some additional lead weight and Luf's rear tires.

So, I haven't totally given up on a box stock entry for our Vintage Trans Am Class. This is my Scalextric '70 Camaro entry. The body went through the paint stripping process, and then I added some decals to set it apart from other entries. The running gear is TOTALLY stock except for the Paul Gage urethane rear tires. We'll see how it performs....

Next to leave the bench was my Scalextric Trans Am Camaro. This is my number 9 car. I have temporarily given up on my number 6 car that I was trying to keep mostly stock, with just a rear tire change. Although the car worked fairly well, the stock Scalextric rear wheels were just not up to the task. I first stripped, then broke 3 rear wheels! The number 9 car has updated Slot.it gears, rear axle, and wheels. While I had it on the bench I made some rear wheel inserts for it out of the ones I broke on the number 6 car.

Spent some time on the bench over the past few days. I tore the evil Ninco AC Cobra down again and worked it over some more. I have way too much time into this car! Added some more weight, a lot more! I glued in the axle bushings and did the super glue axle slop fix. It worked well, but I will admit I glued the axle to the bushings and had to work it loose. Note to self: when using the super glue on BRASS bushings, let the motor turn the axle in the bushings for a longer period of time! It's still a little (ok, a lot) noisey, but I think it's because the pinion gear is worn. Trying out some Jel-Claw rear tires.

Update on the Vette. I had to repair the chassis' rear motor pod mount. I thrashed it pretty hard the last time I raced it and the multiple hard crashes took a toll. I re-epoxied the rear mounting point. Made a few more tweaks to the chassis while I had it apart. I think I made some improvements. We'll see........I've been trying to keep this car as close to stock in appearance as possible. But with a couple comments along the lines of; hey that's not a RACE car, I decided to update the body and details a little. I replaced the Carrera driver figure's head with one from a Ninco car that had a helmet AKA; Race Car Driver. I decided to go with a Rally Car theme (for you Monte) so I added another cockpit occupant, again using a Ninco helmeted head, with rally notes in hand (learned that little detail from Monte!). So I think I have it now as Monte has told me; rally cars are technically RACE cars, racing against the clock.

So I was lookin' around to find outlets to buy these Dash-T-Jets. Under one of the ads for the complete chassis it read: Made for Fray Racer.......
Hmmmmmm...................

Here's an email I recently received from Flyin' Byran:
So I got some of those new Dash Jets last week...here's what I know...
at first I thought they were all crap... I had to grind on all 5 chassis as the crown gear was hitting part of the chassis.
all the metal gears on top were very tight. I took all the chassis apart and made a few fixes... oiled up all the gears and shafts and put valve lapping compound on the metal gears and ran them for a while. I took all the stock axles out and changed them all over to tuff ones. I put about 300 laps on each one with the help of the niece and nephew. I spent a lot of time tweaking, testing, retesting and more tweaking....
I noticed when I was running them around the track they were not sliding like the old ones... at first I thought maybe it was the arm.. just not as much torque maybe? But they were running some pretty good times..... Then I was working on one of them and noticed that a loose axel I had on the table was sticking to the bottom of one of the new chassis... I tried to see if an old one would do the same... It would not... So the reason these cars do not slide is they have magnatraction. The Fray cars we raced at Terrys race were wider...and much lower so the magnatraction was even greater... check out this pic.. try and do this with any ordinary T-jet... as soon as I tip the track the other one slides right off... I can even go a little more vertical than in the pic...
I think the rivets that bond the plates on the bottom of the chassis are conducting the magnetism. They must not be made of brass like the originals.

Here's a couple of cool old photos and an email Howie forwarded to me:
This lady is from Louisiana. Her husband and I met in Houston. He races 1 to 1 cars and he is about my age. He asked me what I do for a hobby/ entertainment and I gave him my Rapid Raceway business card and my interest in 1 to 1 street rods. His wife says she has a picture of his slot car that he used to race. And if she ever found it, she would send it to me. Here it is. It looks like maybe a Cox Chaparral.
I am leaving the note she wrote me intact.
Howie.

I finally found the photo of his slot car and the other photo is of the track they ran on. This was in Japan about 50 years ago.
