Today was the day Team NASTE left its mark on the Portland Adult Soap Box Derby held on Mt. Tabor. Congratulations to Dennis Hart on his excellent finish and fast runs!
Latest update from The Crew Chief:
"First, kudos to Jimmy for sending me that great T-shirt Native American design of a seahawk looking you right in the eye head on. WOW ! I free handed it today on the hood of the flyer and imperfect as it is, IT LOOKS TOTALLY AWESOME !
Also, charged the battery, replaced a large broken wood screw on the rear axle fairing, cleaned and oiled the wheels ( running on rural country roads really bangs em up! ) , added more velcro to the the rear hatch cover and put in some velcro tyedowns so the cables do not flop around in the cockpit and get tangled up in the pullies. Oh yes, also added another spacing washer on each wheel. They were sloppy and showed green paint where they rubbed on the fairings.
Every time I go out to the flyer, she shows me something that needs attention. The test runs were not valuable - they were priceless. Have made enough weights to bring total up to 300 lbs. On Saturday, I will start light and add as needed. My decision.
Troy and I ARE going to the post race celebration into the evening. It will be Christmas and I will want to open my presents.
Valeria Victrix !
- Dennis"

Sounds about right, you bandit you!
You're welcome Doc!
See you on the 25th!!!!
Hey Doc, That would be fine. I'll get the doors open by 3:00pm on the 25th!
TooBad Motorplex - Fairview on the 25th. I could give you a ride home after the race if you'd like. That way I could also find out where you live and where your track is exactly.

The story for NASTE this month IS the Hawksbill Flyer!
Our Team NASTE entry is ready for Saturday's race. Here's the latest update from our Crew Chief/Builder/Driver Dennis Hart:
"Bill -
Luckily, when I began trouble shooting the video problem I found that the rear plug had simply come undone with all the vibration. Reconnected it and taped it up. Works fine.
Also put a strong white glue on that rock ding on the rear left rim. Don't think it will be a problem. Evidently its not too smart to go racing around on roads with stones and gravel. Duhh.
Lastly, weighed the van and allowing for the weight of 14 gallons of gas that I added after the first weighing, we are only at approximately 210 ponds. That's 90 pounds shy.
We can add about 40 lbs with rock filled milk jugs. Maybe we just ought to go light on the first run and see what happens. Please think this over. Lighter would be faster offf the line, but they will catch us downhill.
?????
= Dennis"
WOW! 90 pounds under weight and we still easily hit 35 MPH. I have no doubt that with an added 90Lbs of ballast we will have enough speed! I also feel the section of the track where it starts to level out after the "Learning Curve" is where the race could be won or lost. After walking the track at Mt. Tabor twice, rolling down the course on a bicycle, and from our testing on Sunday and seeing how quickly speeds can scrub off when the road starts levelling off, I think the extra 90 pounds is critical in helping the car maintain its speed through this slow section of the track. I know for sure the Hawksbill Flyer has very low rolling resistance, I've pushed it enough!
Zactly!!!
Zactly!...........
Oh hell NO!!! We'll never be able to cram him into that car!!!! He's going to add bags of gravel in the nose for added weight.
Yes there is a brake, but it was not used in any of today's test runs. The roughness and resulting friction of the road surface seemed to be the biggest cause for the losses in speed/momentum. We are also thinking the car maybe a little on the light side. Dennis is going to weigh the car this week and add extra ballast if we're under weight.
We had three really good test runs! We were very pleased with the cars performance!
Today was the day for a full test of the Flyer's capabilities. I am happy to say the test runs were a huge success!
This is a video of the first test run. This first test was on a mild incline so we could test the steering and overall handling at a slightly lower speed. I had the oportunity to drive the Flyer in one test run. I found the car to be very stable and smooth. The steering was smooth without being too twitchy. It was a fantastic oportunity! Thanks Dennis!

After the first two test runs we changed locations to a steeper and longer hill. We started this run with very little push, which with a good hard push I'm sure Dennis would have reached higher speeds! The car ran smooth and predictably as I followed in the chase van. Dennis reported that the cars streering was excellent and the car handled quite well even at higher speeds! 99% of the construction of this gravity car was completed by Dennis himself. He did an awesome job on this racer!
IT'S GRAVITY RACER TEST RUN DAY!
On my way to Warren to put the Hawksbill Flyer through its paces!
I've been busy with "other" things, but I am quite sure Dave has been on task. We should think about hooking up with Dave for further R&D work. Things should slow down for me after mid September.
Don't forget the optional hand truck attachment!

SUNDAY, August 14th - 9 AM to Noon
Road Testing of the completed, but untried "Hawksbill Flyer"
Meet at 9 AM at the Hart's place in Warren
We will proceed to Scappoose/Vernonia Hwy just North of Scappoose 4.5 miles toward Vernonia
Following about an hour or so of road tests we will retire to the Varsity Grill in Scappoose for a no-host lunch and celebration. All are invited to witness and cheer us on
August 20th is bearing down on us !!
A special " Thank Yous !" to Bill and NASTE ! - DH
Thanks Al, we can definitely use you! Dennis will be there at 7:00am to unload the racer and set up the pit area. I think his son Troy and Jimmy are going to be with him but could definitely use extra hands. Rico and I will be at the track at 5:00am as set up volunteers until 9:00am. So we need all the help we can get in the pit area before 9:00am!
One day of rest, then I'll be back in the traffic tomorrow morning with the trailer headed for the coast!
Sorry I missed the race Monte. We were in Medford at noon, and in traffic from 3pm to 6:45pm!!!!
Just got this update from our Team Engineer Evil Jimmy Jones.
Our Crew Chief/Builder/Driver has finsihed up the Hawksbill Flyer and she is ready for competition! I must say Dennis did an AWESOME job on this project and the car is beautiful! I know you will all agree! This is something we can all be proud to be part of!
Thank you Dennis for letting us be part of this fantastic project and adventure!
Don't forget to come out to Mt. Tabor on August 20th for the race and to support our team!
