Topic: RACE RESULTS - PASER Can Am Race April 25, 2026

For the past few years PASER has not been a very active group, or probably more appropriately, a very active sanctioning body. The rules as listed on the NASTE website were taken directly from old PASER Rule books, or pages there of. For two reasons I took the liberty to edit the rules governing the bodies for the Can Am Class; 1.the original Can Am class had split and gone in different directions leaving the PASER version of the class abandoned. 2. Retro (IRRA) racing chassis have become readily available. With the IRRA style chassis available for purchase, I felt it was reasonable to have the rules reflect the original PASER standard of inline motored chassis classes.

I have recently had some conversations about the upcoming race with various interested racers. Some had questions about racing the old Can Am cars they had raced before. With these conversations in mind, I returned the rules regarding bodies for the Can Am Class to the original verbiage:

Body Group: Only Can Am cars that actually raced in the Can Am series, using Lexan Bodies to Scale with a minimum thickness of .010”.

However, I added this to cover races after the February 21st race: (After the Can Am race on April 25, 2026 the minimum body thickness of .030” will be observed requiring the use of Team Bluegroove bodies).

My hope is this will allow racers to participate with any Can Am cars they may have built for PASER in the past, without the need to purchase a new body before April 25th. After the April 25th race the body rule for .030" Team Bluegroove bodies will go into effect. I think the Team Bluegroove bodies will better support PASER's Hardbody Racing theme than the traditional thin Lexan bodies. I apologize for any confusion or difficulties this may have created.   =======Bill

I am with you Bill on the Bluegroove bodies. I am also glad that you are moving forward on the PASER racing. PASER has been around for a long time, and I will support the PASER racing at Checkered Flag whenever I can.

Re: RACE RESULTS - PASER Can Am Race April 25, 2026

Thanks Howie, I really appreciate that. You and I have talked about my promise to Bob McFarland that I would make the track available to the racers interested in racing PASER style cars. Although PASER raced some classes other than inline scratchbuilt, they focussed mainly on the inline motored chassis. With other sanctioning bodies now covering anglewinder and sidewinder chassied cars, I have limited the PASER classes I will race at Inslot's Checkered Flag to the inline motor classes. That is not to say there won't be any Northwest True Scale or Columbia River Slot Car Racers sanctioned races held here in the future.

With that said, I think racers need to look closely at the NASTE Calendar for upcoming races, and take note of what sanctioning body the races fall under. Finding the rules for each class on the NASTE site is not difficult, but you need to know which rule set to follow.

Re: RACE RESULTS - PASER Can Am Race April 25, 2026

Saturday's Can Am race had nine entries. This was the first PASER Can Am race under the new revised rules requiring inline motor configured chassis only. The other rule revision was the requirement for Team Bluegroove .030" bodies to be used, but that rule was not strictly enforced for this race due to the short notice for the rule change. Bottom line, most all of the entries had Team Bluegroove bodies, and all but one entry had inline motors. The one entry that did not have an inline motor configuration used a sidewinder that was legal per the previous rules. That racer voluntarily took a DQ.

Nine racers made for a nice casual day of racing! The doors opened at 9:00 am for practice. A couple of racers showed up early to test their new fresh builds that had not yet been on a track! Seattle racers showed up early and began thrashing to get cars together per the new rules. Tech inspection was set to start at 10:30 am, but as racers got their work completed and got their fill of practice, the tech inspector got busy! Kirk Smith made the trip up to serve as our Technical Inspector and Race Director. I want to give Kirk a big thank you! Your participation was greatly appreciated! Now we can start working on getting you back ON the track! By 10:45 am all of the entries had made their way through tech.

The race was set up for three rounds of four minute heat races. After a short driver's meeting, the green flag was dropped. It was evident within the first few minutes of the first heat this was going to be a fast race!  The Can Am cars were very fast and handled great! Chassis construction varied from Retro and D3 type chassis, to heavier OSCAR style builds. Their did not seem to be any stand outs that seemed superior in performance. The real advantage seemed to be driver skill.

After we ran through the first round of racing we took a break for lunch. Mike Guthrie had helped me set up the canopy on Friday to provide us with some extra room (thank you Mike for all the help getting ready on Friday!). The nice weather allowed us to open up the overhead shop door and to dine outside. Diane fixed us delicious pulled pork sliders and deli sandwich fixings. There were side dishes to go along with the sandwiches. (Another big thank you to Diane!). We took a leisurely lunch, another side benefit of slightly smaller racer turnouts!

Although he did not have tme to race, Bart did stop by to check things out, AND...bring us chocolate chip cookies! I felt that alone deserved the "Best Of Show" award, but it was not to be.....We just ate the cookies! Thank you Bart, we weren't expecting that for sure!

After lunch we headed back to the track to finish out the race. With two rounds of racing remaining the intensity grew. The fast got faster, and the side by side racing became more frequent. Two thirds of the way through the race it was tight, but Bob Nakamura had gained a substantial lead on the field. Bob's beautiful chassis, combined with his driving skill made it very difficult for the rest of us to keep pace.

Results after two rounds:

The final round was just as fast and intense as the first! Every racer in this race had the potential to win! What made the differences were a few equipment issues, and just very few driver mistakes! For the most part, every racer was on his game! Here are the final results:

http://www.naste.org/members/bill/ICF_IMG_2533.jpg

Here are some note worthy statistics:
1. Almost all of the racer's fastest lap times were under 4.7 seconds!  (Howie's car had a bad motor and was down on power).
2. ALL of the racer's fastest laps were within 2/10ths of each other!
3. The racer's lap time averages were all below 5.5 seconds! The majority ranged from 4.9 seconds to 5.2 seconds, an AVERAGE spread of just 3/10ths of a second (over the entire race)!

This is an indicator of some skilled racers! The overall atmosphere was an indicator of some great friends together for some fun and exciting racing! I want to thank everyone that came out for the race!  Especially those that travelled a ways to make the race; Dennis & Craig from Seattle, Kirk from Canby, and Herb from Salem! You guys helped make the event a success!

Here are the OFFICIAL results:
1st Bob Nak     576 laps
2nd Bryan       563
3rd Herb         559
4th Craig         554
5th Mike          549
6th Bill H.        545
7th Bill B.        522
8th Howie       452
DQ Dennis       553  Voluntary DQ - ran sidewinder chassis to help fill the field.

Re: RACE RESULTS - PASER Can Am Race April 25, 2026

Thanks Bill and Diane for a top notch race event. The atmosphere and the competition were first rate and the sliders, salads and brownie bites were fantastic. Thanks Bart for stopping by and For Rhonda to make those tasty chocolate chip cookies. I can speak for all the racers........Thank you, thank you, thank you for all the effort you put into every race. Cap't Kirk did a great job of being the support guy for tech and race directing! Your help makes a big difference in the racing experience.
