Topic: Clubman Class Racing at Tom's World in Bend

This past Saturday (Oct.19th) was OSCAR's Clubman race at Tom's World in Bend. For this race Tom chose to use the short course, which cuts the long straight in half, and eliminates the banked curve and the Deadman. The short course reduces the lap length to 77 feet by using just the tighter infield portion of the track. This makes for a very challenging track!

There were 14 racers in attendance for this race, with 14 Clubman Class sportscars to fill the grid. There were some beautiful cars in the field! Nick took the Concours honors with his beautiful Ferrari 250 GTO!

The race itself was exciting as well as exhausting. We raced 4 minute heats with 4 rounds, for a total of 64 minutes of on track racing for each racer. On a tight, challenging track like Tom's short course, it was gruelling to say the least! As usual and as expected, there were some racers that experienced mechanical problems, but not many. By the end of the race the top three had pulled away but, there were some very close battles in the middle of the pack. Here are the race results:

Bob McFarland was represented in thsi Clubman Race. The Clubman Class was one of Bob's favorites. One of Bob's drivers was seen in this orange Ferrari during practice.

The practice time before the race allows for some casual conversation as well as prep work on cars.

Re: Clubman Class Racing at Tom's World in Bend

The pit areas were well appointed and equipped!

Tom and Stuart discussed strategies before the drop of the green flag.

Once the flag dropped all the attention was on the track, whether you were turn marshalling or driving!

At the conclusion of the race everyone starts to wind down as Tom reads off the results.

Re: Clubman Class Racing at Tom's World in Bend

There are a lot of things to look at around Tom's track. I spotted this old Chevy that looked kind of familiar. When I flipped it over I saw that it was mounted on an old NASTE chassis. These old Radio Shack motor powered cars were raced by NASTE members back in the 1990's. This particular one (No.5) was built by me and gifted to Lee Dundas in 1997. It's nice to see it is still around!

I also had to get a picture of this nice looking Can Am car!

Re: Clubman Class Racing at Tom's World in Bend

I was bummed I didn't get my schedule cleared up early enough to make this race happen. I was however pleased to see Shaun's result using the chassis I built! He certainly did better with it than I have in the past....

Zack

Re: Clubman Class Racing at Tom's World in Bend

Shaun's car was EXTREMELY good! He also did a great job with the controller!

Re: Clubman Class Racing at Tom's World in Bend

Thanks Zack. It was the best driving hardbody chassis and I have drove. Hopefully I can get my Nascar handling that well.

You did really well also Bill. We had some fun lanes together.

Re: Clubman Class Racing at Tom's World in Bend

Thank you Shaun. That was the best race I've ever had at Tom's. I really struggle with his track, especially when we are racing the full course. I do better on the short course because I can see it all much better. Thanks for those short battles we had, it was fun while I could keep up with you! You were FAST!
