WHAT!???!?????

I may go on a binge!

Bill and gang,

Huge thanks for a great night of racing.  I have missed it direly as my temporary work schedule has me not getting out much.  I really enjoy our racing and the seriously good time we have with it.  It looks like things have developed nicely in my absence and I have some work to do with my 50's car to keep up with Rico...  I was surprised how well the BRM went during the actual race, as when I showed up, it could barely skate its way around the track.  It still had glue from our enduro at Howie's on the tires and they were basically useless.

I had a great time in TA running running next to Greg, sharing the same lap for two complete heats and pushing each other.  Super fun!

And yes, I dug out the #71 Shootout car for GT.  I should retire that car from Odd Thursdays.  I forgot just exactly how fast that car really is.  I will go with something else next time I get to run, but it did feel nice to set a record on my first night back.

Without getting too sappy, it's great to see that even after being away for a few months, the competitive camaraderie seems stronger than ever.  I miss my Odd Thursdays and can't wait for my work life to settle back into my normal groove.

Until next time gentlemen,
Chris

It's so fast you won't even see it!

But seriously, what a sweet runner- it's SO smooth!  Thanks for giving me that extra push Bill.

There's another new arrival planned for this week as well:

I know, not a very surprising entry on my part.  But hey Monte, at least it's not white with a red nose.

Yet...

Worthy of note, there are two BRM Toyotas here which list EVERYWHERE ELSE for $169.  The Taka-Q is $144 and the SE Toyota Dealers is $139, both BEFORE discount.  Knock roughly $20 off that price and it's a very attractive entry point for someone wishing to try a Toyota.

I assume the discounts apply to all, including these, but he may not realize what he has them listed for already...

If I didn't already have "too many", I would probably jump on one of these.

It came, it runs, it doesn't get any better than that. Well, with better tires it might get even better.

Mitch,

I am super mega-jealous.  That thing looks awesome!

No car yet but I am in for this madness.  Anyone have a Cox Ford GT laying around???

Chris

Thanks for an excellent night Bill.  It feels like forever since I was able to attend a Thurs night rumble.  There indeed was excellent racing in all categories, including my duel with Glenn with your car in T/A.  John Fisher is going to be a force to be reckoned with once he remembers to clean his tires before hitting the track.  That car was STUCK!

Looking forward to a fun afternoon at Howie's on Sat!

If you're keeping the car in the classics class, remember the max tire tread width is 7mm.  I believe the Slot.It kits have 10mm wheels.

I really appreciate everyone loaning me theirs to race but honestly some of the hits they take just sound downright brutal, they are amazingly tough but I've been nervous that when one does decide to shatter it would be on my drive!

They are a tight squeeze at Bill's but as you've seen, the racing is close and superb!  They may sound bad, but once you've knocked off the mirrors, wiper and canards (dive planes), they are quite robust- especially at our modest voltage.  Don't be afraid to get it out there and run it.

JMorse wrote:

Now I gotta order some tires and a couple gears and I'm thinkin some spare guides and brushes... cant wait!

The good thing about the way we have the class set up is that you don't currently need to buy anything.  Just put it together and run it.  Tires included.

The only thing you NEED to do is set the gear mesh appropriately and true the tires (using a single cut bastard file; see the rules, I think there's a post which explains it or just bring it on a Thurs night and we'll set you up), but that's about all you need to do.

You will most likely want to change the gear to a Parma.  The BRM gears work but will chip if the rear steps out under power and then regains traction.  They are for 1/8" axles so there is a negligible amount of slop on the axle and any ratio is currently legal.  I think I have a 32 tooth gear on my inline car.

I have a number of spare, unused gears if you don't have any to try.

That's about all that we do with the BRM's, by design.  It's intended to be a build it and run in type of class.

So far, it's Monte, Bill, Stan, and me.  Goose is interested but I haven't gotten a commitment from him yet.  Anyone else?

Alan Smith is hosting a 4 day slot fiesta centered on BRM, featuring sprint races of all their current offerings- Meganes, 917's, and Group C plus a 24 hour endurance race showcasing their new McLaren F1.  The full details are available HERE.

This is to be the first big competition event for opening the new Scaleracing Center.  This is a large and hospitable facility promoting our addiction known as slot cars.  Details for the new shop are in THIS THREAD, including some pictures further down later pages.  I have run on one of the tracks already and can tell you it's technical enough to be challenging and fast enough to be entertaining.

I am attending the entirety of the weekend and would strongly encourage anyone else interested to make time.  I am hoping to gather enough people from Oregon to have our own team but will work with the organizers to ensure all interested parties land on a team.  If you're interested, let me know and we'll figure it out.  It should be an excellent few days of slot car racing!

Schedule overview:

Thursday
10.00 - 16.00: 24H teams present will receive their Race Car and spares.  Track open for 24H practice
16.30 - 18.30: Megane IROC
19.00 - 21.00: 24H practice, cars back to impound
21.30 - 23.30: BRM 917 race

Friday
10.00 - 14.00: 24 Hours practice. 24 Hour cars back to impound
15.00 - 17.00: BRM Group C race
18.30 - 20.30: 24H practice

Apparently I am not cool enough to figure out where that is.  Got a link?

You're welcome as always for the use of the cars- I love to see them run side by side, although I believe half of them were yours Bill.

It was a good learning experience night for getting those cars on other tracks and figuring out what to do to keep them "interesting".  I think the handling was reasonably consistent across all participants but I must say I was disappointed with how the stock tires performed on racing surface.  Considering how well the silicone-treated H&R foams ran, it might be time to experiment with some silicone and a set of Scaleauto foams to see how things work out.  It would be a spendy upgrade though and we'd need to see how durable they'd be.

Regardless, it did seem like everyone was having a good time.  No one was there to set fast lap times- well, except maybe for Dave- and there were lots of smiles and laughs.  I'm sure that starting with the 55's also kept everybody's expectations pretty low, so that probably helped.  For the next time, we need to find a tire which strikes a balance between performance and consistency, and with a bit grippier tire, it might be helpful to potentially drop the voltage slightly as well to minimize crash impacts.  No complaints mind you, just thinking aloud for the next time...

132slotcar.us is hosting another day of racing on May 17.  Sounds like the major race is a BRM event, with anglewinder kits being furnished to participants for simply entering.  Other categories on the docket are 1/24 Scaleauto GT, Slot.it Sprints, 1/32 scale Scaleracing LMP OPEN and a new class- Scaleracing Modern GT for 2000 and later GT 2/3 cars.  Based on needing to build anglewinders for the BRM race (will take some time), I would plan on the racing lasting well into the evening if all the categories are run.

Additional discussion in the thread on SCI:

http://www.slotcarillustrated.com/porta … hp?t=79110

I am booked with a prior commitment but will be attending if that falls through.  I can furnish BRM and Scaleauto loaners if that is precluding someone from participating.  Email me if you're interested.

Track specs: 8 lanes and braided with magna-braid.  Typically cars are required to run non-mag.  Voltage is up around 13V and cars haul.  Pics:

Gents,

Thanks for your very candid feedback.  I will pass it along to Alan.  I had talked to him Mon eve about my feedback and he asked me to check in with you guys.  He is aware of some issues already and was talking about how to address them in the next event.

I emailed Tracy as well requesting his thoughts but haven't heard from him (the "biglog" address?).  If you stumble across him, please point him my way.

Thanks,
CK

An excellent time was there for the taking as a healthy number of Oregonians made a respectable showing this past weekend in Tacoma.  There were 4 official races, two Fri night and two on Sat, with an informal IROC race held as a closer event.  NASTE attendees for Fri were Stan, John and me, with Bill, Monte, Tracy and Mike joining in on Sat.

Most of Saturday's attendees:
http://www.slotcarillustrated.com/v-web/gallery/d/199848-1/Spring+race+2014+065.JPG
L to R: Joe, me, Darren, Scott, Victor(?, obscured), Blair, John, Bruce, Brett, Quim, Wyatt, Stan

First up was a Slot.It Group C race, running any Group C offering from Slot.It riding on Scaleauto foams.  Tuning was allowed with weight and screw adjustments, but it was a fairly controlled class beyond that.  At the head of the pack it was a local, Scott, running away with the race using a #3 1990 Le Mans winner Jag XJR-12.  It was spectacularly tuned and an absolute rocket.  One of the BC boys, Darren, gave Scott a bit of a challenge with his super-smooth 956, but it wasn't enough.  For the first race of the weekend with little to no prior experience on the track for the group, NASTE was represented with an 8th, 14th and 15th place finish.

Slot.It Group C Challenge Finishing Order:
http://www.slotcarillustrated.com/v-web/gallery/d/199774-1/Spring+race+2014+028.JPG

Next up was effectively an open class LMP race, the only three requirements being a scale GT or LMP body, a wing which stays in place or is repaired under green, and spec'd Scaleauto foam tires.  There was a wide variety of hardware on the track for this event, with Darren's Scaleauto Radical taking top honors, followed by a Slot.It Lola, Scaley(!) Lister LMP, SCX Pro Audi, and NSR Mosler.  The NASTE contigent fared slightly better with this event, getting two racers in the top 10 with Stan 9th and John 10th, both with Slot.It Lola's, and I managed as 12th with my NSR Audi R18.  Very tough competition and good racing all around.

LMP Challenge Finishing Order:
http://www.slotcarillustrated.com/v-web/gallery/d/199810-1/Spring+race+2014+046.JPG

Racing on Fri eve concluded in the wee hours of Saturday morning, and the track opened again for practice 8 hours later at 9am on Sat.

With the large number of attendees, the main races on Sat were run as teams of two.  There were 8 teams for the 2 hour BRM race and 10 for the 80 minute Scaleauto race.  Each one was set up with qualifying, teams were made combining top and bottom of the bracket and worked out pretty well and giving anyone a shot at the podium.

For the BRM race, Stan was teamed with a fast local, Pat (my partner from last year), Bill got to run with very skilled Bruce, Tracy teamed with Canadian Wyatt, Mike got hooked up with a very fast racer, Brett, NASTE veteran Monte matched up with NASTE newby John, and I ended up with a local, Blair.

Racing got underway with Darren and Tony clearly displaying exceptional prowess on the track.  Through some stroke of randomness, I somehow managed to run very strongly, trading leads back and forth through the heat.  Pat and Stan also got off to a strong start, playing with the lead mob as well- I remember trying to catch them as they pulled a lead from time to time.  I can't really remember much additional detail through much of the 2 hours, with the exception of my pitiful performance on the black (most techincal) lane, where I tried racing instead of just driving the lane.  I ended up crashing hard into the wall, dislodging the body and gear, and now suddenly I was worried simply about finishing as the rear axle was screaming loud.  Leaders Darren and Tony lost their gear terminally and repaired it under green at a cost of about 20 laps.

Meanwhile Blair and I continued to consistently run our race, tippy-toeing on our gear and trying just to make it to the finish.  Darren and Tony were on the recovery warpath but Blair and I were on the money lanes, they were on black and purple- the two most technical lanes.  Pushing hard, Darren kept trying, occasionally getting back onto the lead lap, but overdriving or having incidents where he'd lose time.  With ~90 seconds left in the whole race, he came out of the slot giving us a 2-3 lap lead which they couldn't claw back, letting Blair and me cruise to finish in FIRST PLACE!  It was a hard fought battle and my most enjoyable memory of the weekend.

In the end, NASTE was well-represented on the podium and in the results.  After two hours, I finished first with Blair, Stan finished 3rd with Pat, Bill was 4th with Bruce, all-NASTE Monte and John grabbed 5th and Tracy finished 7th with Wyatt.

The sharp end of the BRM finishing order:
http://www.slotcarillustrated.com/v-web/gallery/d/199816-1/Spring+race+2014+049.JPG

For the Scaleauto race, heat duration was bumped to 10 minutes due to have 2 extra teams in the rotation.  NASTE was well-represented again with Mike pulling down 2nd place driving with Bruce, I grabbed 5th with Joe, all-NASTE Bill and Stan worked their way down to a 7th place after being the early heats pace-setters, Tracy and Pat got 7th, while Monte and John had a forgetable experience losing a wheel (not once, but TWICE) and with the ensuing repairs, were lucky to actually finish the event.

I don't have the IROC results but it got off to an interesting start.  It was 2 one minute heats per lane, crash and burn style.  Cars ran the first minute until they deslotted.  If they deslotted, they were put back in the slot at at the point of departure when the first minute was up and then the second minute for that driver in that lane was completed.  Crash again, you're done til the next lane.

All in all, there was some very intense racing on a big track to be had with good people.  I look forward to building more interstate competition and having more regional events to attend.

Indeed Bill, thanks for a great night of racing.  It was too long since I last raced at Too Bad and I knew how much I missed it.  Good times all around!

It's excellent to see the BRM's getting some track time.  Tracy's new Leyton House car looked fantastic and shiny, although with the close running, it shouldn't take too long to change that.  People do seem to enjoy going side by side with them and they do offer fantastic racing in the configuration we've chosen.  I am glad to be a part of it.

Looks like I need to get my work done at home so I can squeeze a little more out of my entries.  Goose certainly raised the bar this week with his GT40- what a smooth, planted runner!  Excellent motivation...

Looking forward to next week as a warm-up for the Tacoma weekend!

And thanks to Bill and Tracy for doing the driving to get us all there.  It was definitely a good time with good people on a fast, fun track and lent itself to good, close racing.  It seemed like a very user-friendly track to learn and we could concentrate on having fun instead of learning how to drive it.

Very fun times!

Chris

I've thought more and more about this lately.  The goal of the BRM Challenge is to have box stock cars be competitive in a scale racing format (accurate shapes, "scale-ish" speeds) and I support that.  If someone wants to take a Group C or IMSA GTP model body and adapt it to either chassis (Porsche or Toyota), at this point I would say I encourage it, as long as it remains in the spirit of the Challenge rules.

The only restrictions:
no alterations to the hardpoints of the chassis (wheelbase, guide location, axle carriers), i.e. no structural alteration of the chassis
the car must meet all the other Challenge rules
the body must provide no competitive advantage.

Bring on the Jag's, Merc's, Mazdas, Nissans...

Chris

Technically, the only bodies legal for the BRM series are the BRM 962 and the Toyota 88C.  The forthcoming Sauber Mercedes C9 will be eligible as well, although it will need to run a red motor to keep things even.

That said, I would not be averse to someone swapping a different body onto an otherwise completely stock BRM roller chassis providing it meets all the other criteria (dimensions, weights, etc...).  In other words, no  underweight body without an interior built to have an advantage over the stock BRM.  This eliminates altering the wheelbase and/or guide lead length, etc... regardless of the wheelbase of the car chosen to model.  The 956 fits well on the Toyota chassis but the wheelbase is off on the 962.  The Jag XJR series go well on the 962 chassis with trimming of the venturi areas.

A word of caution with the model bodies though- with the exception of the Tamiya 962, generally speaking, all the others are significantly thinner, lighter, and less durable than the BRM bodies.  Running them at Too Bad may be hazardous to their existence.  It also means that ballast will likely be needed to attain min weight.

The intent of BRM is to provide gorgeous, scale appearing cars for racing.  My intent with sticking as close as practically possible to the Challenge rules is to have box stock cars (with the exception of gears) and make this a driver's contest without continuously escalating tuning wars.  If we stick within that objective, I'd let it ride.

But I'd also reserve my ability to change my mind.  Anyone who picks up a box stock car should be able to win with the right combination of driving and luck.  If body swapping and associated modifications impede that, it'd need to be controlled.

Clear as mud?

Chris
