We'll get you set up.  Thanks!

We're sorry for this inconvenience but it keeps things simpler for all of us.

Well goodness, what a turn-out!  Thank you all.  We had 19 racers for the first event of the year.  I think that's our largest group so far.  And what a day of racing it was.

After the first round Randy, Bryan, Rico and I all stood with perfect scores of 15.  But only Randy could maintain the pace in the second set as the rest of us all slipped up a time or two.  And who's car did he run?  Rico's.

Congrats to Racin' Randy!

I liked the cars, it was a nice, somewhat diverse group.  It's also good to get to play with some of these other cars we've had for some time.  I thought my Mosler did pretty well and Rico's Porsche was sailing right along.  We'll see how well these lexan chassis hold up.  I must admit I am not optimistic.

We'd like to give an extra-special thank you to George who provided us with those two Lexus and the yellow Porsche that were ably driven by many.  Bryan's probably looking for one of those Porsche's today...  George, we're most appreciative.

And thanks to Victoria for coming up with another great soup format.  That was quite tasty!

On a final note, here's all the preparation I did to my cars for the race:

1.  Remove the magnet.
2.  Replace the rear tires though a few did still have stock tires.
3.  True the tires.

And that's it.  I didn't add weight to a single one of them though I thought I was going to have to with my Pro Mosler.  It was tail-happy as all get out.  Then I replaced the tires.  Afterward it was happy as a clam.  It's sometimes amazing what a difference the right set of tires will make.  And what tires were they?  They were very similar to the Fly Classic Urethane hand-out tires that we had made for that series.  That sort of tire seems to work really well on our track.  These were actually made for my SCX digital cars - probably a Euro-Sport wheel size.

Five more races are scheduled for this series so we'll look forward to seeing you next time.

Last update: May 7, 2012

I've updated the rules to include chassis bracing to avoid the Ninco hops.

It will be interesting to see if the cars have the Ninco hop or if the pod helps get rid of that.  If so, I bet those axles pop right out of their sockets.

Although that pod does look pretty substantial compared to the typical Ninco motor mount on the cars I have.  I've snapped a number of chassis for the Ferrari 360's.  And they weren't even being stressed at the time.  The lexan chassis seem the worst for that.  My McLarens on the other hand have had countless laps put on them with nary an issue.

That looks nice, did you add all those decals?

Yes, may Santa fill your stockings with all things good.

And what did you get?

Looks very nice!

According to Bill, it's the new Lambo and the Ford GT.  Personally I've never seen one.  Bill says he has one coming to see what they are like.

I had to look around a bit to find one with a picture showing the underside of the car but here you are:

Ninco Ford GT

Ok, cars with pods are outlawed.  Seems like those could quickly change the balance and make us all want to go buy new cars.  I think the older non-pod versions should be adequate.

I'll have to look and see what I have.  Not sure I have any with the pod but if it's a stock car that fits a long can it should be ok.

You betcha, try this link and you should get at least 50 or more examples.

NC-5 at ebay

And here's a selection of NC-2 powered cars that will fit the NC-5 too:

NC-2 at ebay

I'm sure there are many more, it's a wide selection.  I have no idea if some are that much better than others.

Most all body styles of coupes are acceptable.  No convertibles and no Formula cars.

Here's some NC-6 cars, same size motor.

NC-6 at ebay

Ok racers, we've run series for the Fly Classics and another for Racer, NSR and Slot.It cars.   Now we're going to switch gears and move to a new series featuring Ninco "coo-pays" with NC5 motors.  These will be just like the cars we have recently run in the NASTE series and they provide good close competition with a minimum of effort in tuning.  And another nice thing about these is that the cars should not be difficult to find or expensive.  Many of us already have some.  And there are many choices, in fact I have at least half a dozen here that I will use as loaner cars.

So what about some rules, we should have some.

The Rules*

1. General Procedures

1.a.  If it's not specifically stated below, you can't do it.

2. Cars

2.a.  Any Ninco COUPE that fits a stock NC-5 motor is legal.  It is not required that the car come with one but it must fit correctly.  No adjusting of the chassis for motor fit is allowed.  For instance a car that comes stock with an NC-2 could be upgraded to an NC-5 by virtue of a simple motor swap.

2.b.  Car body and chassis must be stock.  Minor chassis trimming allowed.  Major cutting or trimming is not allowed.  Bracing the motor and rear wheels is allowed and on many cars may be needed to help reduce both the "Ninco Hop" and broken chassis caused by said hop.

2.c.  Only non-pod chassis are allowed.  The newest versions with pods are not legal since they could quickly unbalance the playing field.

2.d.  Motor must be a stock Ninco NC-5.

3. Running Gear

3.a.  Wheels and Tires - any similarly sized (compared to stock) wheels and tires are allowed.  All wheels need to touch and roll.

3.b.  Tires can be rubber, urethane or any similar compound.  Silicon tires are not allowed.  We don't run Sili's at the Pen.

3.c.  Gears - any is ok.  Experiment away.

4. Chassis

4.a.  No traction magnets allowed.

4.b.  Weight can be added but must be inside the car.

4.c.  Chassis screws should be taped.

5. The Season

5.a.  January 2011 through June 2012.

* ok, these are more like guidelines and could change if someone has a really valid complaint or a really good idea.

We had a great time too.  And I think Victoria said they got in three games of Scrabble.  That was quite the crowd!

Man, now I wish I could do that.

George, I should have shown you my scratch-built brass chassis.  It uses thin brass and some side rails made from train tracks wrapped around a Slot.It pod.  Very cool stuff.

Congratulations to George who had the top score for this past Sunday.  Rico could have possibly won all his heats had he not succumbed to peer pressure and swapped out his killer P68 for a different car.  As for myself, I found out that my controller may not be the best for small hands as I found it set considerably different when I got back to it later in the day causing me some driving difficulties as I kept coming off right in front of Rico and I assure you it was not deliberate.  A quick reset of the digital settings and it was back to normal - a little late to help in any of my heats.  So it goes...

It was fun to see how well Alex and Sean did even though they were using magnet cars.  I think that part worked out real well as they were able to hang in there and get a feel for some real racing action.

This event very likely puts to rest the Italian Stallion Shoot-Out for now and we'll move to a new class for the start of the next year.  I'm thinking we'll move to Ninco's for a spell.  I'll release an announcement soon when it becomes more clear.

I'd like to sincerely thank all those that came out, I thought we had a great time yesterday.

Howdy Mike.  If you don't mind classic sports cars, I'd go with the IPS.  The cars are a little slower and perhaps easier to get a handle on.  Let's see what Rico and Greg have to say.

Rico, Greg and I have been having a good time with the Proxy races.  Recently I've been talking to others that are interested in the proxy scene so this might be a good time to take a look at what that is.

A proxy race is one where you build a car to a spec and then send it off to do battle around the country or around the world on other tracks as driven by their local drivers.  It's a lot of fun keeping track of the results and seeing how your skills match up with other slot racers around the globe.

As it turns out there are a number of them in a wide variety of formats.  The three that I have become involved with most recently are:

SCX WorldWide Proxy Rally - an event for classic SCX rally cars that is just about to start - we expect the first event in January.  Entry is now closed for this one.

International Proxy Series - the IPS is an event for classic cars using lower powered motors.  We just completed round 7 here at Penguin Point.  There is one more round to go and plans are already underway for next year.  If you like classic race cars from the early 60's and previous this is the one for you.

World Challenge Touring Car Series - the WCTC is a series for coupes and GT's similar to the DTM cars that run in the current real world series.  If you like Pugs, BMW's, Alfa's and Volvo's, then this is the class for you.  This one is also winding down this season but is planning to start up the next one with not one, but two classes.

And as I say, there are many others.  The Race Across America (RAA) has so many entries this year that they have moved to a general qualifier to get the field down to a reasonable size.  Then there's the Fly Truck Proxy, The Last Open Road, the Cheetahs, many and varied.

Here's a link to more

It's a fun time so get in the swing.  Got questions?  Ask away.  I just think a few more of the local members might want to give this a try.  It's also a great way to get a handle on car development - a skill we can all benefit from knowing more about.

Did somebody say IROC?

Here's a pretty cool answer with at least 4 liveries planned.

Judging by what we saw last night I don't think there will be much difference between the different cars that a magnet and good motor can't fix.  They all looked pretty good to me.

I suggest we use rubber tires rather than silicon.  I had a set of these on my Lancia and I thought they worked excellent for a no-mag car.

I'm sure it would have been even better with a magnet.

Howdy Gulf and welcome to the site.  Please come join us for some racing.  Check the schedule, you'll find ample opportunity.  We'll use our SCX Digital track for one of the events this year for sure.  So what's your plan for that SCX digi track?

Good luck to you Mike.  Let us know how it goes.

My personal preference would be option C.  And that's only because I have Lancia's sitting on the shelf.  The question in my mind is should we allow the new EVO chassis or not.  And it's only a question due to the fact that the EVO chassis though very cool is only available for some of the cars and not all the ones in the C class.

And maybe we should consider running rubber rather than silicone.  As a minor test, I tried my Fly Lola the other night at Randy's using the NSR rubber tires rather than the IndyGrips.  I think if hooked up as well if not better than my cars with the IndyGrips.  Perhaps some testing is in order.  It would certainly reduce the need to clean the track.
