Yes it's that time again!!! Time to thrash on Halloween cars! I'm starting early this year, 4 whole days before the race!!! I need 3 cars this year. One was completed for me by Hugh Ellesworth. A car he had built and never had a chance to race with us. I will be racing Hugh's car this year for him. Diane and Cailin will be attending this year, so 2 more cars to go. Let the thrash begin!!!

Rules revisions as of Oct. 21, 2015:
Classic Sports Car Class - Class separated into two Divisions to allow for readily available new chassis technology such as 3d chassis with motor pods. Division I cars identified by solid chassis construction and 7mm max. width rear tires. Division II identified by chassis utilizing any type of articulation, such as motor pods, hinged side pans, or front axle mounts with suspension or movement. Division II cars can use rear tire contact patch width up to 8mm.
Trans Am - All cars must use the Scalextric Standard "Black Stripe" 18 motor.

There's a couple issues with the Odd Thursday races I'd like to address. First is the motor disparity issue in the Trans Am class that has been discussed from time to time. Although the competition in our Trans Am class is the closest of all our classes, I believe it could be even better if we can get motor performance levels closer. The biggest issue seems to be the performance levels between Scalextric Standard "Black Stripe" motors, Scalextric Sport motors, and Pioneer motors. The SCX motors are clearly below the levels of all the previously mentioned motors (well, except for Rico's!). What I am proposing is a rule change requiring the use of Scalextric Standard "Black Stripe" motors in all Trans Am class cars. For those that wish to race a Pioneer car that would require a motor change to the Scalextric motor, which I believe is just a snap in replacement. For those wishing to run a SCX car it may require the implementation of the Too Bad Rule, although Monte is checking on a motor pod replacement to facilitate the installation of the Scalextric motor.
Issue number two is what I have noticed in the Classic Sports Car Class. The performance of the cars in this class has well exceeded the original intent of the class. The class was originally designed to allow the racing of the older type sports cars that ran on skinny narrow wheels and tires. With the inclusion of the Slot.It Ford GT40 and the new availability of the 3D chassis, the flat non-motor-pod type chassis are becoming non-competitive. Rather than banning these types of chassis and leaving racers and builders with cars they have time and money invested in with no place to race them, I would like to split the Classic Sports Car Class into two divisions. One division would allow flat non-motor-pod type chassis such as the Ninco classic chassis, as well as scratchbuilt flat fixed chassis. That would mean scratchbuilt chassis without motor pods, and without any type of movement independant of the motor and rear axle mount. Therefore chassis side pans, front axle mounts, motor/axle mounts cannot be hinged or floating in any manner. The rear tire contact patch would remain at 7 mm for this division. The second division would include all manufactured chassis with motor pods and scratchbuilt chassis with any type of chassis articulation or movement. In addition I propose an increase in rear tire width to the spec used in our Trans Am class of 8mm measured at the contact patch to track surface.

Update: Overall I was pretty pleased with the Porsche. It had good speed, but the handling was pretty loose. Some of the looseness was due to the fact therear tires were old and not as soft and sticky as a new set. It could also use a little chassis tuning, mainly some weight added. I didn't finish well, a DNF is never good, but the reason was minor. A broken lead wire put me out with one heat left to go. I did complete close to seven four minute heats, almost thirty minutes of racing, and suffered no body damage! I thought it was a good first outting for my car!

Yes, last night was one hell of a night of racing here on an Odd Thursday! Rico kicked off the night with one of the most dramatic slot car crashes I have ever seen! His F1 car lterally self distructed leaving parts all over the track! It was great for us, not some much for Rico!
The Vintage F1 class was first race. six of the nine entries were in the Scalextric Vintage Division. Amy Fields was out of the gate with an early lead, but Goose scored the overall win with Amy placing first in the Modern Division, Greg Greenman Petrolati first in the Scratchbuilt Narrow Tire Division, and Rico Locati first in the Scratchbuilt Wide Tire Division.
In the Trans Am class we saw the close racing we have come to expect in this class. Greg Petrolati scored another win by a slim .4 lap margin, and only 1.4 laps separated first through sixth!
Then the real battling began, and it was fierce! The big daddy BRM Porsche 962s racing no holds barred, TooBad Motorplex style! Those faint of heart or timid need not apply to race this class! If you don't want to scuff your car don't put it on the track for this race! Chris Kouba fought his way to finish first surviving some brutal attacks (I know because I launched a few of them!). This is another closely contested class here on Odd Thursdays! Less than 2 1/2 laps separated first through fourth.
For a return to the past the Over 50 Class entries hit the track. We see quite a variety of cars and types in this class. We also see all kinds of failures and breakage. Last night was no different with anything from front end falling off to bent axles! In the end Gary Gossett crossed the finish line in first with his newest light body entry.
For the last race of the evening Chris Kouba volunteered (silly man) to let run an IROC style race with his BRM Porsche 917s and his new BRM Ferrari 512. Untypical for the gang at TooBad Motorplex we raced nice with the beautiful cars in an attempt to not destroy them. I must say these are very nice, excellent handling cars! It was great fun and thank you very much Chris for letting us run them!

The races for the point series at Rapid Raceway will be in the Can Am Class this season. Beau Frazier produced some beautiful Can Am chassis which he made available for the first buyers at a super price! These chassis are gorgeous! If you didn't take the opportunity to pick one up on the first go around you should get your name in for the second bunch!
Today I started working in earnest on my entry for Rapid Raceway's Can Am series. Much to my dismay I found the Can Am bodies I had purchased from Truescale did not fit my new chassis. Both bodies were Porsches and they were 3 1/4" wide. The chassis Beau made available are 3" wide. Although the chassis have provisions for changing the side pans to wider pans, I decided to use another option. I had an old chassis that we raced with the PASER guys back in the early 80's. It is an American Line chassis that came with a soldered in 36D motor. The chassis is already set up for tall true scale type wheels and tires, so all I had to do was modify the chassis for a Falcon motor. After I cut out the 36D motor I installed a motor mount for the required Falcon type motor. I am not a great chassis builder, and my soldering skills are limited. I am alsways looking for new techniques to make chassis building easier. One tip I picked up recently was from an article Jarius Watson did in the new Slot Cars Magazine. He suggested using a small plastic bottle for liquid soldering flux. I followed his advise and must say I wish I would have thought of this years ago! It makes applying flux so much easier, easier to control and get it where you actually want it! Thank you Jarius!!! So the next tip I came up with myself, mostly though desperation and frustration! I found today that aluminum tape works excellent for holding parts in position for soldering! The stuff holds great to any surface and the heat does not affect it! Plus, solder does not get on the parts that are taped over!!!
Anyway, here's some photos of today's progress:

Odd Thursday Night October 1st, 2015 marked the first race for the new Can Am/USRRC Class. In addition to the usual classes of racing we ran two races for Greg Greenman Petrolai's Last open Road Proxy. We got the proxy races started early and completed both races by 6:45pm, just 45 minutes later than we normally start the Odd Thursday Night races. We welcomed two new racers to TooBad Motorplex, Jane Lapointe and Mike Daily. We hope they get a chance to come back and race with us again!
The first Odd Thursday race was with the new Can Am Class. There were 11 racers with 3 entries in the USRRC Division and 8 in the Can Am Division. Rico Locati scored the win over Monte Saager by just 1/10th of a lap. Gary Goose Gosset scored the USRRC Division win with his MRRC Cheetah less than five laps behind the overall winner. The top four overall finish positions were less than two laps apart. It was a very close race!
Next up were the Classic Sports Cars. The competition in this class has become very close as racers refine their cars and improve their skills on the track. Jeff Fields thrilled the crowd by throwing enough wheels from his car during his heats to keep three NASCAR pit crews busy! Rico Locati lead the way with Gary Goose Gossett just 1/10th of a lap behind. Another extremely close finish for the evening! In this class just three laps covered first through seventh!
By the time we got to the BRM Porsche 962 Class a few of the racers had left. With that said we still had an outstanding BRM race! Monte Saager took the win by a mere 5/10ths of a lap! Yes, another very close finish!
Last but not least was the Over 50 Class race. Rico Locati got out front and stayed there with his awesome Classic chassied Corvette Grand Sport. Monte Saager finished second two laps back.
Thank you to all that made it out to race, and a special additional thanks to those that brought goodies, and especiall to Jeff & Amy for bringing ICE!!!

This Thursday's race on Oct. 1st will include the running of Greg Petrolati's Last Open Road Proxy. My plan is to get things rolling on the proxy promptly at 4:00pm. After we complete the running of the proxy we will move right into the scheduled Odd Thursday Night classes.
