Re: NASTE Gravity Racer Program

The date of the race is Saturday August 19, 2017.

The actual race will probably be set to start around 10:00am and end around 4:00pm. Volunteers can sign up to help out at various times throughout the day.

Bill spilled the beans already but there's more info and pictures of the whole circus here:

Re: NASTE Gravity Racer Program

These are killer machines! Nice work guys.

If you feel like a flame job, I can do flames!

I "THINK" I will be around on race day, I will lend a hand if you need it.

Re: NASTE Gravity Racer Program

Thanks Hoiwe, I already know we could use any extra help we can get! Plus we will need folks who are willing to volunteer for track work for the organizers. I am planning to voluteer for early set up again this year. Early set helps with the course layout from 5:30am to 9:00am or so.

I know there was a curiosity regarding the planned livery of my car.  This should help you figure it out.  I'm sure the peanut gallery can connect the dots (color by numbers?) and figure out the rest:

More progress was made at the workshop this week, including getting Mr Smith's ride into more of a soapbox-looking shape.  He is going for a somewhat non-conventional FOUR(!!!) wheels:

Re: NASTE Gravity Racer Program

Great work day yesterday!..........

Realization this morning; I am TOO old for real WORK!

But really happy with how much we got done. We have very good paint protection on the gravity cars now. Getting close to finished with the MKI & MKII, then work will start on the Hawksbill Flyer!

All three cars are now pre-registered for the Portland Adult Soap Box Derby event in August. We are still looking for more voluteers. Volunteers are needed for track work and for assistance in the pits with the cars!

Current state of things- wheels turned last night (at least they did on the Mk 1):

Still have some additional painting to do, and I'm not enamored with the screw heads on the nose, but it's a start.  The bodywork was worth 2 additional MPH on the hill in front of the house (17 vs 15).  Once the speeds pick up (and the rest of the bodywork is actually attached), I expect this to make a larger difference.  I also need to dial in the front end.  It feels like the tire alignment is scrubbing off speed.

The Mk II went with Bill to the auction for his grand-daughter's school today and pulled in a three figure bid for a ride down the hill.  Not bad for a bunch of slot racers trying to build something a human gets to ride in.

Here's a photo of the winning bidder Jeff Chochon at the Creative Science School fundraiser. A generous donation of $130 puts him in the driver's seat at Mt. Tabor in August for a run down the hill! He will also be participating in a test session at one of our undisclosed sites before the big race. He says he's ready and excited to go!

I did a little work on mine as well. At this point, I have only a little red which needs to be applied to the nose of the chassis and I think I'm done.

Using some aluminum round stock, I built a new "steering wheel" which looks remarkably similar to a bike handlebar:

After cutting out and mounting the last of the body panels, I shot some primer and paint on them.  This morning, I rolled it out for a photo shoot to see what it looks like outside of the shop.  I need to add just a small band of red at the nose of the chassis, but will wait til everything is dried/cured before masking.  I think it looks pretty darn good right now though:

And to complete this week's activities, I spent some quality time with the motor bike from Mr Smith and it now starts and idles.  I picked up a throttle lever and ordered some chain for it, so I hope to have it moving shortly (although the chain will be 2-4 wks before it arrives).  I'll work on the throttle control until then.

Once we get Bill's and Dave's set up, it will be time to head out to the hills again.  Looking forward to that!

Re: NASTE Gravity Racer Program

Did somebody say "Motor Bike"? The Harley is all charged up with a brand new license plate sticker and waiting for sunshine.

Well yes, technically I did say motor bike but should have said mini bike...  Probably not cool enough to hang with a Harley:

Still need to put a throttle cable on it and connect the drivetrain up, but at least the motor is now mounted to the frame and RUNNING!

Re: NASTE Gravity Racer Program

I bought an old Bonanza frame when I was a kid for $25 and took the motor off of an old lawnmower that had been sitting in the basement for several years. I rode the wheels off of it for a couple of years then passed it down to a couple of younger cousins in California. When I was 15 I spent part of a summer at their place in Clear Lake. I found the bike in a shed out back with the centrifugal clutch burned up, so I hammered some pennies around the outside and made it direct drive. We spent the next few weeks running it on all of the back roads around the lake. I don't know what ever happened to it after that, but it was the best $25 I ever spent.
