Uh oh. I thought I had all of the trans am cars I would ever need, but maybe not. http://www.scalextric.com/uk-en/shop/ne … -1971.html
I was trying to decide how to post this, and at the end of the evening really love Mitch's finish on his cars. One of the cars I have in the works is a Nissan Skyline which my daughter planned the color scheme, and I painted.
Both turned out dreadful, and could use help in the masking territory for sure.
I picked up some 3m 'blue vinyl' masking tape from our sign shop in inner SE (under $10 per 1/4" roll), and will post updates as they come. We used green, blue, scotch (sadly to say it was crap), and plain masking tapes to dissapointed results. The photos don't do it justice on just how bad it looks.
My little caveat here is that I see lots of 'oh yeah, use this...' on the ol' internoodle and very few people that try it out and share what really works. Being Portland, if you want something, you generally make it yourself, so I figure our group is the pioneers of really getting it wrong first.
The silver lining is that its my second brass chassis. The hubs are Fly Vipers tucked into a 60's narrow sedan type, and the car PINS it with a Fly motor, for a four door sedan...Japan...
I used to really struggle with painting and masking. Pretty good at it now, happy to give you the benefit of my experience. Or talk to Greg.
I've used striping tape before to hide the bleed where I've taped off lines. I've always had mixed results with my masking jobs too! I do like the choice of color on that car!
A couple of thing to try regarding masking:
1.) Try putting the tape on a hard surface that you don't care about, then use a straight edge and a sharp blade to cut a new edge on the tape.
2.) Apply tape to car body in desired area and then LIGHTLY spray some clear on the area. The clear is supposed to seal the areas that will bleed.
I have used this method with better results than the stock edge of the tape, but I still suck at these types of projects.

According to my wife, the trick is to paint the car the color you want the stripes, then mask off the stripes, paint over the tape with the same color. After it dries paint it again the color you want. Later when you peel the masking off it won't have bled through. I've yet to try it myself, but the next one I do, I'm going to do it.
