Re: New Track Under Construction at TooBad Motorplex in Fairview

A certain rally track comes to mind...

Race cars are neither beautiful nor ugly. They become beautiful when they win.

Re: New Track Under Construction at TooBad Motorplex in Fairview

Worked on the track some more today....................still at it!   --------------------Bill

Re: New Track Under Construction at TooBad Motorplex in Fairview

Keep at it!  Look forward to seeing you a little later today.

Got plastered again..........well the track did...........again !   Finished up the first 25 pound bag of plaster today, and started on a second.

Here's what one of the turn marshal "holes" looks like...

Wow, that sounds like a lot of plaster!  Keep at it, the season is coming!

Re: New Track Under Construction at TooBad Motorplex in Fairview

I worked on this section today......

After plaster it looks like this. It's hard for me to get much of an idea how the finished product will look when everything looks like snow!

Re: New Track Under Construction at TooBad Motorplex in Fairview

I feel your pain.  When I first did the Autumn Hills track and it was covered in Sculpt-a-mold, I took a picture with the two rally cars - one being the Subaru with the snow effect.  Victoria's comment - "Getting a little sloppy with that stuff aren't you"?  "Uh, no dear, that car comes like that."

Re: New Track Under Construction at TooBad Motorplex in Fairview

I know we already have Marshall Field, but I think this track should be named Marshall Hole :-O

Re: New Track Under Construction at TooBad Motorplex in Fairview

It's 2 HOLER!!!!

Re: New Track Under Construction at TooBad Motorplex in Fairview

I can't believe it, I'm almost done with the plastering...........on my THIRD 25 pound bag of the stuff!!!

I should be able to finish what's left of the plaster work tomorrow......

Re: New Track Under Construction at TooBad Motorplex in Fairview

So does that equate to 75 lbs of plaster on the table?

"Big Smooth"

Re: New Track Under Construction at TooBad Motorplex in Fairview

A little over 50 lbs right now, but in the end, yeah, probably the entire 75 lbs (I haven't wasted much)!

Re: New Track Under Construction at TooBad Motorplex in Fairview

Saturday morning and it's break time. Tryin' to finish up the last bit of plaster, then a little prep sanding and I'm ready for the final coat of Kilz primer. After the Kilz dries it'll be a little bit of base color on the landscaping, and then the track surface finish work starts. Stayed tuned for paint work.   -----------------Bill

Re: New Track Under Construction at TooBad Motorplex in Fairview

12 hours work on the track today, but it is now ready for the last coat of Kilz primer to seal all that plaster.......

WHOA!  I can see it.  There's a slot car track there after all!

Re: New Track Under Construction at TooBad Motorplex in Fairview

All plastered and primed.........................the track, not me!!!

Impressive I must say.

Race cars are neither beautiful nor ugly. They become beautiful when they win.

Re: New Track Under Construction at TooBad Motorplex in Fairview

Got some base colors down this evening...............lots of air brushing to follow.................at some point.......................

Re: New Track Under Construction at TooBad Motorplex in Fairview

There are a couple more areas where I will probably lay down some more base color......but at this point I am ready to try rolling on the Rustoleum "Magnetic" Paint Primer. After that primer it's time for the track's running surface paint.

Re: New Track Under Construction at TooBad Motorplex in Fairview

Say, you've been busy!  That's really starting to take shape!

Re: New Track Under Construction at TooBad Motorplex in Fairview

This evening I applied the first coat of Rustoleum Magnetic Primer to the track running surface. This stuff ain't cheap ($22.50 per quart), and it is some nasty stuff (no pun intended!). The single quart got me one coat over the entire length of the track, and a second coat on four of the turns. If you use this stuff be sure to have them shake it well on the paint shaker before you take it home to apply. When you're applying it, stir it often! The heavy stuff settles to the bottom of the can quickly. It is REALLY thick and gooey, almost like grease!

So does it work?......Well, a neo bar type traction magnet sticks to the track where I have two coats fairly well, at least when it is layed directly on the track surface. I'd say the magnet strength is close to what an old stock Aurora HO pancake motor magnet has when placed on a steel surface (so I guess not much really). Where there is only one coat of primer the neo magnet will stick, but just barely. I am going to invest in one more quart of the primer and see what improvement I can make with that.

Re: New Track Under Construction at TooBad Motorplex in Fairview

So that's going to be the top coat rather than an underlying primer?

"Big Smooth"

Re: New Track Under Construction at TooBad Motorplex in Fairview

No, this is the underlying primer, multiple coats. I am going to use the same paint The Professor used on his track in Auburn for the top coat.

Although for a slot car track, I think this magnetic paint would make a nice surface to run on. The texture is similar to the old blackboard texture they used to have in the early days of slot car tracks.

Re: New Track Under Construction at TooBad Motorplex in Fairview

It will be interesting to see how this turns out.  Is it your hope that some magnetic attraction is achieved?

"Big Smooth"

Re: New Track Under Construction at TooBad Motorplex in Fairview

Yes, I'm looking for some magnetic attraction, something much lower than plastic track though. The only reason I'd like any magnetic attraction at all is to provide more options for classes. In my opinion, some magnetism to the track will allow for better "box stock" racing for some of the various makes and models of cars available. And another aspect is, at one of your races Monte, you had the kids and some of the new racers race cars that had traction magnets against some of us more experienced racers racing cars with no traction magnets. I found that to be a lot of fun, and from what I saw of the less experienced racers, they seemed to enjoy being able to race head to head with the more experienced racers, regardless of the fact they had a slight advantage. I would like to try some racing in that format. And lastly, I want to run some late model F1 cars, and I feel magnetic traction is appropriate for that class. The real F1 cars perform like they are magnetically attached to the track, so (again in my opinion) the performance of the F1 slot cars with magnetic traction would provide the higher level of performance befitting of the class. Bottom line is it's all about options. With a track that has magnetic attraction I have more options.     ---------------------Bill
