Topic: 2024 24 Hours of Tacoma Report

Checking in from up north...

Stan, Jake, and I are in the house and representing OR in fine fashion.  Over the past two days, we have built up a very smooth and sweet car, the latest offering in development from BRM- a Ferrari 330!  It is stunning!!

The glass pieces are from unpolished tooling, so they look frosty.  This will be fixed for final production versions.  In addition, our livery is completely coincidental- I had nothing to do with it!

It is shown as prepped for entry, so the lights have been taped over and various things reinforced with Shoo-goo, etc... to make things a little more robust.  Regardless, it is still gorgeous and I am looking forward to the main event.

Qualifying was this evening, and inexplicably, I grabbed provisional pole with a 6.770 second lap on lane 8 of the 8 lane track.  Equally inexplicably, this is the position I held all the way til the end, when the BRM team got their shot.  They beat me by 0.001 second with a 6.769 second lap.  So close, yet so far...

It was still a decent showing and bodes well for tomorrow.  If we can keep it on the table, in the slot, and running laps, we have a good shot of doing well.  That's always the rub though- controlling yourself to run your race at your pace and clock consistent reliable laps.  Time will tell on Sun what we manage to do!

If you're up for spectating or even get a wild hare and want to get on the drivers' stand, there's still time to join us.  The race starts tomorrow at 1000, and goes through approximately the same time on Sun.  If you take the time to get here and want to try it, we'll make space for you on the line up.

Nice car!  Keep it in the slot and out of trouble.

Best of luck to you all.

So it's in the books...  How'd we do?  In a full field of entries (14 total teams), we claimed 10th overall, but that's just a number.

Barring several miracles, we are never going to beat the Can Am team, or the Italians.  There are a few other local teams which are always at the pointy end too.  Our best realistic finish was probably (generously) around 5th or 6th, so 10th does not disappoint me.  We had a mechanical issue or two which cost us some time (one straight off the line losing about 50 laps in the first heat on the fast track), but plenty of other people had their share of pit time too.

What the finish order doesn't tell you is there was competition across the spectrum of teams.  We were neck and neck with the Austin guys, only ceding 9th to them by ~40 laps over around 10,000.  I'd call that close.  There were heats where we did extremely well- finishing in 2nd twice, once even on the lead lap!  I was swapping lap times with some of the locals and had some of the funnest and closest racing I've ever had up there.

Also, see people from around the world show up is always excellent.  There were teams from across the US, plus Canada, Italy, and Mexico.  Great people and fierce competitors.  It was clear that everyone was having a good time.

Even the event seemed to run reasonably on time across the week this year, although the sprint races were quite a challenge with 30-40 people entering.  It's great to see the logistics improving.

I know that no one seems to be interested in attending this, but I will be entering a team again next year.  Think about participating.  It is the 10th anniversary and Alan has promised that it will be "something special", although I will be there regardless.  Come join me.

Thank you Chris for the report.

I wish I could attend.  I went to the Halloween race and standing for 4 minutes was a chore.  I couldn't image 50+.
