Topic: Rob's Car Builds

Check out these really nice 1/24 Cox cars my friend Rob just completed. Many of the parts were sourced from parts cars and incomplete kits. Rob researched each car extensively to obtain the correct colors and decals. To get the correctly sized decals to accurately represent the real cars, numerous decal sheets were used from different manufacturers including Pattos. He took extra care to ensure all the small details were correct. Rob built show winning model airplanes for many years. These are the first slot cars (or model cars for that matter) he has built. He really did a nice job on these cars, they are beautiful!

Nice work!!

Race cars are neither beautiful nor ugly. They become beautiful when they win.

That's amazing.

Nice!

Re: Rob's Car Builds

Rob stopped by to show me the latest cars he completed. Keep in mind these are restorations, not new builds. Rob takes cars that were poorly built or broken, takes them completely apart, and repaints and rebuilds them. It's amazing what he accomplishes, especially considering what he starts with! I can't build models this nice even starting with new kits!

This Cox Chaparral was originally painted yellow using a brush!

Rob said the headlight area of this car was particularly difficult because of how well the lenses were originally glued into place, and the repair that the nose of the body required.

These vintage Porsche 904 cars by Monogram are sometimes overlooked. Rob did an awesome job on this build.

Re: Rob's Car Builds

This seems like a good time to show some photos of Rob's home track set up. He has a nice space over a large machine shop just a bit north of Vancouver. His track is plastic sectional Eldon 1/24 track. This track is a blast to run on, nostalgic for sure!

Rob scratch built this really cool pit area building.

There are some really nice detail items Rob also scratch built like these signs.

Rob is the master at restoration work! Check out this cool art Rob created using an old cardboard box logo!

There is a lot to look at when visiting Rob's track. He has some really cool displays!

That's is pretty cool if I do say so. But that track makes my knees hurt just looking at it. Time for a table build....

Re: Rob's Car Builds

Rob stopped by yesterday for a little track testing and to show me a couple of his newest restorations. Anyone who collects vintage 1/24 slot cars has them. The old half destroyed cars that were either put together by someone with poor building skills, or cars that were abused. Rob took two more of his "junkers" and turned them into the beauties you see here! He then put them through their paces on the track.

Re: Rob's Car Builds

Rob stopped by the other day with a couple of new builds.

First up is this 1/24 Strombecker D Jag. This car was built from the static model kit that can also be powered by a cheap battery powered electric motor. Rob adapted this kit body to a slot car chassis. Anybody that has seen or put one of these kits together knows how difficult it can be to assemble. The body is a two piece clam shell design and the pieces do not fit together very well. Rob did a beautiful job of blending the top and bottom halves together. His objective was to blend the two pieces together just well enough to eliminate the gaps, but yet retain just a hint of a seam that shows on the real car.

http://www.naste.org/members/bill/IMG_4374rob.jpg

The Strombecker D Jag is an old model kit. There were not a lot of detail parts, and as previously stated the fitment of the parts is not all that great. The tail lights are molded into the body piece. Rob did an excellent job of paint detailing those tail lights for some added realism.

http://www.naste.org/members/bill/IMG_4375rob.jpg

The underside of the body was a full belly pan. The optional electric motor mounted in this lower portion which also served as the chassis. Rob cut out the bottom of the body in a way that makes it resemble an actually slot car body from the '60's. He used a Monogram chassis which he restored and modified to fit.

http://www.naste.org/members/bill/IMG_4381rob.jpg

The amount of work Rob put into this beauty is amazing! Rob commented that the headlight lenses were especially challenging because they do not fit into any type of bucket or insert. The lenses mount flush with the body with nothing behind them. Rob even located some vintage wheels that were large enough to replicate the tall wheel and tire combination of the real car, then he added inserts made from the kit wheels. Outstanding!

Re: Rob's Car Builds

The other car Rob brought with him was this beautiful Monogram Scarab. Although Monogram re-released this as a model kit a few years back, Rob re-built this car from an original '60's slot car. Rob used the later Monogram model kit wheel inserts, and polished the aluminum wheels to match. This is a very nice restoration!

http://www.naste.org/members/bill/IMG_4388rob.jpg

Rob said the difference between colors of the factory molded bodies is amazing. The early slot car bodies has much more metallic and the blue is much darker.

Beautiful work, nice job!!

Re: Rob's Car Builds

Rob does some very nice work. I was never or still a very good modeler, but as a kid everything I built was with the intention of blowing up or sinking beneath the waves of Hartung Pond. There's gotta be a lot of boats full of gravel ballast in that pond. Made me a crack shot though.

Re: Rob's Car Builds

Note to self...  restore that Scarab...

Fabulous work.

Re: Rob's Car Builds

Rob came by today with some of latest builds.

First up is this Strombecker Cheetah he restored. One thing Rob is really good at is getting the bodies lowered on the chassis for a better ride height. I should have wiped the car down before taking these photos. The dust distracts from the great paint job!

Re: Rob's Car Builds

Although Rob does a lot of restorations, he also completes some new builds. This Porsche was built from a new Revell body kit and placed on an original Revell chassis.

Re: Rob's Car Builds

Does Rob race these beauties to give them "honored war stripes"?

Re: Rob's Car Builds

He likes to run all the cars he builds. He is hoping for some "vintage" car races to be held in the future, something I would also like to see. He has also expressed interest in racing with the True Scale guys. I am currently looking for cars to get him going.
