I agree with Chris on the classes that should be scheduled for the point series championship. I think they should be classes that have been established and raced for at least one full season of non-point races. As Chris said this allows racers time to acquire a car and get it dialed in. This makes for closer and more competitive racing. The point series races should be used to determine who the best drivers, tuners and builders are. They are not the races that should be used for car development and "practice". The point series races not only determine the best drivers, but determine who has come up with the best setups and the best builds as evidenced by durability and consistency. That is not to say some development and "tweaking" does not take place during the point series, but the preliminary "bugs" should be sorted out by the time the point races start.

When I started with NASTE I think we only had GT and Classic Sports car, at least that's all I remember. F1, LeMans, Trans Am, Over 50 and Can Am all came later.

It bugs me that I can't remember, I'm sure we didn't run the same cars every two weeks. I think each week we ran one of the classes then Bill ran an IROC race. I'm sure someone else remembers.

Mitch, I looked back and the first NASTE Odd Thursday Night race you attended was on November 7, 2013. At that time it looks like we were racing the Classic Sports Car and GT classes at each race. After those two classes were raced we finished off the evening with a BRM 1/24 IROC race which Chris Kouba started for the NASTE racers. If you're wondering, you finished 6th and 1st in the first two races. I have a feeling you lost your magnet privileges in that second race!

I agree with Doc, and I agree with Chris on limiting the number of classes raced for the point series championship.

That is the same type of results I saw from rewinding motor armatures years ago. Performance of motors was not linear in regards to applied voltage. An armature wound with X feet of #Y wire at Z number of turns per pole may have resulted in 20k RPM at 12 volts. Another armature wound with a heavier or lighter wire at different feet and turns may delivery the same RPM or very close to the same RPM at the same voltage. However when you lower or raise the voltage, each of the two different armature wind's RPM may vary greatly. Available current (amps) also contributes to the final RPM output and can also vary greatly depending on the wind. Some motor brands may run close to their maximum RPM at slightly lower voltages, some may drop off more.

Using a "Spec" voltage versus specific motors may be a good alternative. It would take some testing. Lowering the voltage may even close the performance gap between some of the different motors. My experience in testing motors has never shown a linear performance change with varying voltages applied. For example, just because a motor is rated at 18,000 RPM at 14 volts doesn't necessarily mean it is going to deliver 9,000 RPM at 7 volts. From my observations anyway.

One thing to consider when making up rules, is to be sure new people coming into the group can get started without a lot of extra expense and work. As we know many times new people don't have the skills developed to make changes to their cars. It is also discouraging for them to find out they not only have to buy a certain car, but they have to replace the motor it came with before they can even race it. We have seen people get discouraged and not come back for these reasons. It is one thing for the experienced racers in the group to establish rules they like, but on the other hand if you don't take into consideration what's required for new people to get into your racing program you will see a decline in membership. I've seen this happen with other clubs, and more than once. The most difficult part of maintaining a slot car racing club is acquiring new members! Acquiring new members should always be a top priority if you want the club to succeed.

The current 1/32 F1 class has never been part of the NASTE Point Series Championship. As laid out there is no way to accurately and fairly score the finish positions and award points.

Hmmmmmm..........Strombecker and Eldon...............I have some of those............somewhere............I think................

I'm good with the proposal.

I received this proposal from Chris Kouba and thought I would post it here for discussion:

LMP class:

I originally intended to write up some sort of class structure for the inclusion of the modern LMP cars with and without roofs, so they would fit into something similar to the GT class.  But I started getting drawn into a "Sportscar Decades" type of class, to allow all manners of hardware from similar eras to run on the track together.  There are a few cars out there which would be cool to run more but that don't have roofs.  Class rules would be copied from GT with the exception of not requiring a roof.  Eligible cars would be from each decade, starting with the 70's.  If it ran in IMSA, SCCA, FIA, Camel GT, etc... classes, it's good to go in the appropriate decade bucket.

If the decades aren't an appropriate bucket, we could look at pre-ground effects (1970-1980), ground effects (1981-1993), and LMP-era (1994-present).  We can adjust as necessary.

This gets us a place to run the 908/3's, the 917/30's, 936's, Matra's, Audi R8's, BMW LMR's, Peugeot LMP's etc... with other era-appropriate cars (both open and closed roof).  This is effectively our GT class broken into era buckets with the roof restriction removed.

Sportscar Era classes:
Pre-Ground Effect (PGE) Era - Full-fendered sportscars from 1970 through 1980 which ran in FIA, IMSA, or SCCA sanctioned events.  Any motors (22k limit), tires, driveline configuration, or chassis material may be used.  Bodies must be injection molded or resin cast and not vacuum molded.  Thunderslot brand RTR cars are NOT eligible for this class, but their driveline components (wheels, axles, gears, tires) and guide assembly may be used for tuning.

Ground Effect Era (GFX) - Full fendered sportscars from 1981 through 1993 which ran in FIA, IMSA, or SCCA sanctioned events.

LMP Era (LMP) - Full fendered sportscars from 1994 through current  which ran in FIA, IMSA, or SCCA sanctioned events.

A straight up LMP (only) class would also be similar rules, FIA/IMSA/GT cars from 1994 onward, although I'd remove the motor restriction.  Try this on for size:

Any full-fendered car competing in IMSA- or FIA-based classes is legal for this class. Any motors, tires, running gear, driveline configuration, or chassis material may be used. Thunderslot brand RTR cars are NOT eligible for this class, but their driveline components (wheels, axles, gears, tires) and guide assembly may be used for tuning.

The race schedule for the remaining 2018 season has been revised. The Point Series races are the same but order of the first races of the night have changed. The third race of the night will remain BRM, but the fourth race will change to Open meaning Thunderslots or any car that might compete with them.

The NASTE calendar and the list of races here in the forum have been updated to reflect the changes.

Thanks Monte, I see the new tab!

I'm marking the previous rule discussion threads as CLOSED to direct any new conversation to this thread. We still have some discussions open for further dialog. I will try to move those links to this thread. Sound OK?

=====Bill

We had a meeting between the preliminary race and the point series race on February 15th to conclude some of the discussions regarding rule changes to existing rules for next season. Here is a quick run down of the approved changes for the 2019 season by class. These changes will NOT go into effect until the start of the 2019 racing season which starts sometime around September of 2018 (clear as mud right?).

Can Am: Can Am and USRRC will become stand alone classes and as such raced separately. The exclusion of NSR brand cars and chassis plates removed.

Classic Sports Car Division 1: This will become a spec motor class. Division I cars will be required to use the H&R 14k motor only. Class is limited to cars replicating cars built and raced through 1967. Podded chassis will be allowed in Division I provided the chassis motor pod mounting screws are tightened AND the pod is permanently glued making the chassis compliant with the solid chassis rule. No movement or dampening is allowed between the main chassis piece and the motor pod.

Classic Sports Car Division II: This will become a spec motor class. Division II cars will be required to use the H&R 18k motor only. Class is limited to cars replicating cars built and raced through 1975.

* These rule changes posted to Official Rules on July 6, 2018

The lead off race for the night was for the F1 Class where Doc posted the win with a one lap lead over Goose.

Thanks to Al for some excellent racing and a good supply of snacks and drinks! Thanks to all the racers that provided MORE snacks!
