It's less than that, Doc. More like 0.13%. And even less if you're young and relatively healthy.

If a race happens in the forest, and the Koub isn't there to see it, did it happen?

Thanks to Bob for the wonderful car and Rico for the loan of his controller...both of which were much better than the driver they were loaned to! Thanks to all who showed up for a great day of racing. It's been a long time coming for me—haven't touched a controller since last November, so this was a really fun day.

How do they run? Fun? Fast? Equal, so racing with them is interesting?

...and...?

Thanks to all for the offers of help! I'll see you on Saturday!

Then I probably will need to borrow yours. Thanks!

Will my DiFalco work, Mitch? If not, I will accept Bill's kind offer. What a great bunch of guys!! Thanks!

Would it be possible for a non-racing visitor to attend? I'd be happy to marshal...

As many of you know, I am having my shop/apartment/AirBnb building renovated. Work has been slow going due to a number of things (one contractor pulled out of the project, the "new" contractor got concrete dust in his eyes and had to lay low for 10 days, COVID killed some time, and now wildfires are making air quality so bad that nobody wants to work [can't blame them]). At any rate, since I think the "lockdown" stuff is idiotic and an overreaction, I have been champing at the bit to start racing. As soon as the renovation is done—probably late October—I plan to host a race for anybody brave enough to venture outside without a mask. We just spent 10 days at Disney World in Florida, wearing masks all day long in 90+ degree heat (everyone knows that viruses just THRIVE outdoors in the heat, right?). Not as much fun as you would hope, though the crowds are MUCH smaller and that's a good thing. Let's start racing again!

That's looking very good, Mr. Bill!

RE: Construction "safety" videos... When Interstate 25 was being built in my portion of New Mexico (64-67 or thereabouts, I forget), they made all of us in high school watch videos on what NOT to do around construction equipment. Since the equipment was often left on-site and not necessarily "secured," the construction company felt it necessary to let folks (read overly-curious high school rebels) know that such equipment could be DANGEROUS!!!!!!

Most of the videos ended with blood and body parts oozing out of fallen bulldozer blades or earth mover cavities. The videos were VERY descriptive, and caused much distress among the high school girls viewing them. The boys, not so much; I think many saw them as challenges to their manhood...

Doc, apparently California is not as kind to trees as Oregon; no lawsuit. The crash was harder on the car than the tree.

Mitch, you get past it the way another did: while working at the Village Theater in Westwood (near UCLA), I witnessed the following...

A guy who worked as an usher at the Bruin theater across the street received a Porsche 911 Targa for a high school graduation present. The evening after he got the car, he totaled it. The NEXT DAY, his father had replaced the car with an identical one, and the idiot was happily driving badly again. Some people have more money than sense.

When I was attending UC Santa Barbara one of the guys in my dorm had borrowed his brother's Miura. Drove it down Hollister Road as fast as he could and wrapped it around a tree.

Mitch, I'm ready to race again, are you?

I wish my renovation were going faster than it is...we could be racing here. Looks like things will be down for at least another couple of months. Right now, those of you who have been to my place wouldn't recognize it; it's all torn apart.

Hopefully, we'll be beyond this craziness soon!

I second the request, Doc. I'm ready to race. We can "socially distance" by racing only two lanes, leaving white out and racing blue and red. Marshals will always be 6' apart. We'll wear masks until the salmon comes out!

This isn't an argument. Are you pining for the fjords?

Now I'm more bored. Even with the mystery!

No we don't.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Man: Is this the right room for an argument?

Other Man:(John Cleese) I've told you once.

Man: No you haven't!

Other Man: Yes I have.

M: When?

O: Just now.

M: No you didn't!

O: Yes I did!

M: You didn't!

O: I did!

M: You didn't!

O: I'm telling you, I did!

M: You did not!

O: Oh I'm sorry, is this a five minute argument, or the full half hour?

M: Ah! (taking out his wallet and paying) Just the five minutes.

O: Just the five minutes. Thank you.

O: Anyway, I did.

M: You most certainly did not!

O: Now let's get one thing quite clear: I most definitely told you!

M: Oh no you didn't!

O: Oh yes I did!

M: Oh no you didn't!

O: Oh yes I did!

M: Oh no you didn't!

O: Oh yes I did!

M: Oh no you didn't!

O: Oh yes I did!

M: Oh no you didn't!

O: Oh yes I did!

M: Oh no you didn't!

O: Oh yes I did!

M: No you DIDN'T!

O: Oh yes I did!

M: No you DIDN'T!

O: Oh yes I did!

M: No you DIDN'T!

O: Oh yes I did!

M: Oh look, this isn't an argument!

(pause)

O: Yes it is!

M: No it isn't!

(pause)

M: It's just contradiction!

O: No it isn't!

M: It IS!

O: It is NOT!

M: You just contradicted me!

O: No I didn't!

M: You DID!

O: No no no!

M: You did just then!

O: Nonsense!

M: (exasperated) Oh, this is futile!!

(pause)

O: No it isn't!

M: Yes it is!

(pause)

M: I came here for a good argument!

O: AH, no you didn't, you came here for an argument!

M: An argument isn't just contradiction.

O: Well! it CAN be!

M: No it can't!

M: An argument is a connected series of statements intended to establish a proposition.

O: No it isn't!

M: Yes it is! 'tisn't just contradiction.

O: Look, if I *argue* with you, I must take up a contrary position!

M: Yes but it isn't just saying 'no it isn't'.

O: Yes it is!

M: No it isn't!

O: Yes it is!

M: No it isn't!

O: Yes it is!

M: No it ISN'T! Argument is an intellectual process. Contradiction is just the automatic gainsaying of anything the other person says.

O: It is NOT!

M: It is!

O: Not at all!

M: It is!

(The Arguer hits a bell on his desk and stops.)

O: Thank you, that's it.

M: (stunned) What?

O: That's it. Good morning.

M: But I was just getting interested!

O: I'm sorry, the five minutes is up.

M: That was never five minutes just now!!

O: I'm afraid it was.

M: (leading on) No it wasn't.....

O: I'm sorry, I'm not allowed to argue any more.

M: WHAT??

O: If you want me to go on arguing, you'll have to pay for another five minutes.

M: But that was never five minutes just now!
Oh Come on!
Oh this is...
This is ridiculous!

O: I told you... I told you, I'm not allowed to argue unless you PAY!

M: Oh all right. (takes out his wallet and pays again.) There you are.

O: Thank you.

M: (clears throat) Well...

O: Well WHAT?

M: That was never five minutes just now.

O: I told you, I'm not allowed to argue unless you've paid!

M: Well I just paid!

O: No you didn't!

M: I DID!!!

O: YOU didn't!

M: I DID!!!

O: YOU didn't!

M: I DID!!!

O: YOU didn't!

M: I DID!!!

O: YOU didn't!

M: I don't want to argue about it!

O: Well I'm very sorry but you didn't pay!

M: Ah hah! Well if I didn't pay, why are you arguing??? Ah HAAAAAAHHH! Gotcha!

O: No you haven't!

M: Yes I have! If you're arguing, I must have paid.

O: Not necessarily. I *could* be arguing in my spare time.

M: I've had enough of this!

O: No you haven't.

M: Oh shut up!

Okay, last post on this topic:

Does this not make you stop and think?

When the State tells you it’s safe to go to The Home Depot to buy a sponge but it’s too dangerous to go to a florist and buy flowers—it’s not about your health.

When the State shuts down millions of private businesses but doesn’t lay off a single government employee—it’s not about your health.

When the State bans dentists because it’s unsafe, but deems abortion visits safe—it’s not about your health.

When the State prevents you from buying cucumber seeds because it’s too dangerous, but allows in-person lottery ticket sales—it’s not about your health.

When the State tells you it’s too dangerous to go golf alone, fish alone or be in a motorboat alone, but the Governor can get his stage make up done, and hair done for 5 TV appearances a week—it’s not about your health.

When the state puts you IN a jail cell for walking in a park with your child because it’s too dangerous but lets criminals OUT of jail cells for their health—it’s not about YOUR health!

When the state tells you it’s too dangerous to get treated by a doctor of chiropractic or physical therapy treatments yet deems a liquor store essential—it’s not about your health!

When the State lets you go to the grocery store or hardware store but is demanding mail-in voting, IT’S NOT ABOUT YOUR HEALTH.

What have we been asked to give up "in the name of health"?

Howie, thanks for the offer. I would love to race, but have obligations that will prevent me from being there. Maybe next time, hopefully SOON!

Not a doctor, Howie, but I read a lot. 94% of the deaths in Oregon are people over 60 with underlying co-morbidities. The bulk of cases resulting in hospitalization is for elderly people (like me) with underlying health problems (not like me), so the shutdowns are adversely affecting people who are NOT at risk, and causing more harm to them than benefit. I have spoken to folks with relatives in the health care field, and they tell tales of people with cancer, diabetes, other problems etc. that are NOT being treated because "elective" or non-covid related problems are not considered "essential" at this time (trying to avoid "overwhelming" hospitals). Well, the only hospitals that are being overwhelmed are in New York, and that's because of incompetent leadership. The hospital ship Mercy was hardly used, and then sent home. ANY death is a tragedy, and I'm not saying that people aren't getting sick, but we are finding out now that between 50-80% of cases of COVID-19 appear to be asymptomatic. That means that potentially MILLIONS of Americans have already been infected with NO adverse effects, and that the disease is far less lethal and dangerous than first feared. Keeping the economy stagnant is harming MORE people (30+ MILLION out of work) than will ever be hurt by the disease. It's time to get back to work.

Yes, the shutdowns are "for a reason," but not for protecting health.
