Tom's World Raceway is normally a huge high speed course with lap lengths in excess of one hundred feet. But by utilizing an optional curve the course can be shortened to roughly seventy seven feet. This shorter course was the one chosen for the OSCAR Clubman Class race on Saturday October 9th. The Clubman Class is for 1/24 scale small sports cars.

The racing at OSCAR events starts early and runs through the entire day. Each racer races in a round robin rotation, heat races in each lane of the track for 4 minutes. This rotation is repeated four times for a total of 64 minutes of on track race time for each racer. It is grueling, especially on this short version of Tom's World Raceway!

A lap on this short course requires your full attention! From the start line you accelerate down the straight to the first left hand sweeper. The sweeper is the optional corner in the course and is placed about one third of the way down the normal front straight. Coming out of the sweeper you almost immediately hit the very tight kink to the left. This corner is a killer as it is right at the bottom of the bridge! The bridge is a hump style climb and decent over the top of a section of the track. It is extremely easy to carry too much speed and get too much air over the bridge resulting in a crash in the tight right hander immediately following the bridge! After the tight right hander you proceed down the short straight in front of the driver's stations into a decreasing radius right hander going under the bridge. Now you're on another short but fast straight into another right hander that leads into the tight esses. The esses end in a left hand turn that leads you back onto the the main or front straight. The fast guys complete this in less than 4.9 seconds!

There are always mechanical failures and damaged cars at races at Tom's World. Saturday was no exception! Racers tore up gears, broke chassis, and destroyed bodies! Man was it ever fun!

Here are the race results:

No rules on body types yet. Open for discussion. I would like maybe Can Am or sports car bodies? LMP or Le Mans?

Yesterday we have 8 racers on hand for the first run of Womp Class racing. The 20 lap heat race format seemed to be a hit. The format uses a point based scoring system with racer's average lap times breaking any ties. Using European Round Robin driver rotation it only took 45 minutes to run through the entire race. Bob Nakamura scored the win.

The Flexi Class race was run using the traditional 3 minute heat race format, and also European Round Round robin driver rotation. We had one driver drop out so the race was run with 7 entries. Dan "Doc" Fritz took the win in this class.

After Monday's races I have decided the Flexi Class for racing here at Checkered Flag will be for 4 inch chassis. Checkered Flag is a relatively short track and is better suited to the 4 inch chassis. Plus most racers have 4 inch chassis cars sitting around. If you're one of those that does not have a 4 inch flexi type car, i have plenty of used ones and can fix you up! The 4.5 inch chassis cars will continue to be raced at Bob Nakamura's Springwater track, which is more of a super speedway course. I have updated the rules for Monday races.

The Womp race seemed to be a hit with the lap count heat races inspired by the Pelican Park racers. It provided for some very close racing! We will continue with that class and race format next Monday.

As Mitch posted we ran a couple races during yesterday's open track day. We first ran a Womp race trying out a new format. Inspired by the format used at Pelican Park we tried out a race consisting of 20 lap sprint races. Using this format and a scoring system based on points for your finish position, each heat race was a heads up race for the win. Racer's average lap times was used to break any ties in the points. The racing was very close! With 8 racers on hand it only took 45 minutes to complete the race. Response to this race and format was positive, so we will run this again next Monday.

Here's the Womp Race results:

After the Womp Race we raced Flexi's. For this race we used a traditional round robin format with 3 minute heats.

Here are the Flexi Race results:

After the Flexi race it was suggested we either race 4 inch or 4.5 inch chassis only, not both. I have given this some thought and based on the fact Bob Nakamura's track is like a super speedway, and has chosen 4.5 inch flexi chassis to race on his track, I think we should race 4 inch chassis at Inslot's Checkered Flag, since Checkered Flag is more like a short course.

That looks 100% better Mitch!

Thanks Doc!

So they make the Lola T70 in the coupe version as well as the Can Am version? So they make 3 different models? Two different T70s and the Elva?

4 models? What do they make besides the Lola and Elvas?

There was more discussion on the rule change to allow Thunderslot cars into the Can Am Class. As a result of this discussion the rules have reverted back to NOT allowing Thunderslot Can Am cars into the class. It is back up for vote and the final decision will be made after more racers get their chance to vote.

My 2 cents worth. At last might's race I competed in the Can Am Class with a well prepared (ZACK prepared) Slot.it Alfa 33. Having not raced at Al's for sometime I know my driving skill was not on par with the other racers. But, it was obvious to me the Thunderslot cars were superior. I was loaned a Thunderslot Can Am car during practice and with it I could easily beat the lap times I was running with my Slot.it car. In my opinion if Thunderslots are allowed to race in this class it will become a Thunderslot Can Am class!

I have received feedback that it is time to start racing!

I have entered new information in the calendar for the next Open Track Monday for Inslot's Checkered Flag Raceway. Here it is in a nutshell:

RACING starts at 2:00PM.

First up is the WOMP Class. Races will be sprint type consisting of 20 lap heats races.

Immediately following the WOMP races will be the Flexi class. Races will be conventional 3 minute heat races.

The SECOND ROUND of Racing starts at 6:00PM following the same schedule and format of the earlier races.

Racers can arrive early and race in both events, or attend just one. Each even is scored separately, two separate races on the same day. The potential is there to win them both!

Track closes when last racer is ready to leave!

I've gotten bogged down on this class. The big issue with the Over 50 cars are the sidewinder 36D powered cars. Getting enough ground/track clearance is challenging! Not to mention solving the rear tire issue. On the Checkered Flag track with the 12 volt power, the newer style natural rubber tires work best. As yet I have not found replacement "donuts" for a reasonable price. Using hard rubber tires we could go with lesser ground clearance, like maybe .032" versus .055", but with the softer natural rubber tires .055" is the least I am willing to allow. Those huge brass spur gears can play hell on a track surface!

Another option I'm looking into is switching out the brass spur gears to plastic. I have some, but I'm not sure what kind of supply I have yet. The track clearance problem is the big hold up, at least on the sidewinder cars. There are other Over 50 class cars that are inline that would be easier to get past this problem, but that leaves out a lot of great old chassis types! I will continue my efforts to come up with a solution.

I am planning to be at the race this Thursday. You can have more discussion as Doc said and let me know what needs to be written for the Can Am Class. I've been more focused on other things lately.

I'm also planning to bring other parts along in addition to the motors I listed. I'll try to get there early so you guys can go through what I've recently uncovered.

In my opinion it is easier to just initiate a new class rather than keep changing the rules of existing classes. It is fine to make small changes and adjustments to a class, but at some point with major changes it becomes a new class anyway.  I think it is fine to just let a class go by the wayside or let it become "inactive". No where does it say you need to race ALL the classes every season. At least if you leave the rules as is you can always go back and reinstate and inactive class. There are many classes in NASTE that have not been raced for quite a few years, but they are still there if anyone wants to race them.

In my opinion this illustrates the main issue with racing 1/32. There are so many manufacturers with so many different styles of cars and chassis it is hard to group cars into competitive classes. I think it has gotten to the point where the different brands need to form separate classes. The Thunderslot cars are a perfect example. This rule change has pretty much made Can Am the Thunderslot class. It seems to me "like brand" cars make for the closest competition. Unless you allow for 3D printed pod chassis in any given class. And that is a whole 'nother can of worms.......

I dont see anybody so far speaking  out against  so I say it  is a go and remove the thunderslot from not eligible list for can am class.

Can Am Class rules updated to allow Thunderslot cars, 9/16/2021.

In regards to the motors I'm selling. I think you will all agree $6 for any of the motors listed is a pretty good deal. My intent is to give some racers a chance to get some good deals on motors. I'm not looking to just liquidate these motors ala fire sale.

For this initial sale I am limiting each racer's purchase to one single motor of any particular brand/type. This will allow more racers to get an opportunity to get at least one of the more desirable motors.

So far Doc has requested an H&R 14k and 18k motor. (sold - set aside)

Rico has also requested one of each of the H&R motors. (sold - set aside)
