Fellow Slotheads,
Bad Bob, Kimm and Howie
have commited to hosting one Tifosi IROC Challenge each
at their tracks and I would like to extend an invitation
to all members of all clubs to come and race
with us. Not sure how the schedule will unfold and
will keep you informed with dates. It looks like we
will simply replace one of our regular Oscar races
with a Tifosi IROC Challege.
I have not seen a IROC style race with the
Oscar Club and think it may have
real potential to include more racers
by removing the variable of chassis availability,
which appears to be one of the more
restricting components for Oscar.
Thank you very much for your efforts and I know
anyone who comes is going to have some fun.
David
The more I mess with these Jiada cars the more I like them. They are not extremely fast, but fast enough. They handle a little on the loose side, but controllable. At this point in the testing I have broken one rear wheel, and burned up one of the capacitors. I'm in the process of stripping 4 of the bodies, which amounts to mostly removing the sticky glue residue from the cheap stickers! Not much in the way of actual paint that needs to be stripped off before the repaints take place. I plan to reinforce the wheels with Goop around the inside of the wheels and hubs (as I did for my Scalextric A1 GP car). My only area of concern other than the wheels is the guide flag setup. It seems pretty rinky-dink to me, although I haven't had one break during testing (so far). They do seem to be sensitive to adjustment. I may try replacing one with a guide flag from another manufacturer, or using a Slot.It guide for a wood routed track (since the cars maybe raced on Kimm's routed wood track). So that's where I'm at right now. I'll keep you all updated as things progress! ---------------------Bill
NASTE Halloween Race - Jeff Courtney is progressing well on the room for his 1/24 track. Jeff is planning to have the track up and running by the date for the NASTE Halloween Race, November 1st. If all things go according to plan the NASTE Halloween Race will be held on Jeff's track. TOOBAD Motorplex in Fairview will be the alternate site should things not go as planned. -------------------Bill
The next NASTE Race is at Pelican Park in Eugene in 2 weeks. I'd like to get the car pooling details planned out. I am volunteering to drive the "Toaster" down. I have room for three passengers. I will need to know who is planning to go down for the race, and what time we want to head down. If more people are driving maybe a staging point and we can all drive down together. Possibly a stop for food? Doug is opening up the track at 10:00am for practice. The race starts at noon. I would like to go down early and stop for breakfast. Any ideas? -------------------Bill
I talked with Bob McFarland and John Gill today. John gave me a call and said he would have a complete ready to run car for loan to a team to race at Howie's 962 Enduro. He has a body that's painted and ready. All that is needed is to connect up the head and tailights for the car. John volunteered to assist the team in preparing the car, and I will help as well.
Bob McFarland emailed me and he is willing to loan a chassis for a team. Bob also has a body for the car, This car will require a motor and all the associated parts to assemble it for racing. The team that chooses this car will need more preparation. There will be plenty of help available I'm sure, but the team using this car should plan on a little more preparation time.
So, on my list of interested racers I have George, Monte, Rico, AJ and my son John. If you would let me know which car you're interested in teaming up on, I will assign you to that car. Also, it looks like we will be looking for at least one more racer to fill the teams for these two cars. If you are interested please let me know ASAP! ---------------Bill
Great race Dude!!!!!! ---------------Bill
Ok, an opportunity has presented itself! The seattle team will not be making it down this year. The chassis Bob McFarland has built for the Seattle team to use is up for loan! Here's your chance to race a chassis built by THE BEST hardbody chassis builder! Howie's Annual Porsche 962 Enduro is THE 1/24 racing event of the year in the Northwest! This is a true enduro! So here's your chance, if you're interested let me know ASAP! Four racers have already contacted me and expressed interest. George, Monte, Rico, and AJ are on the list. And here's the best part, rumor has it there maybe a second loaner chassis available! That will make room for two more racers! ----------------------Bill
My Jiada cars are in! Time for a little testing!!! ------------------Bill
Monte, I doubt if we could get EJ's to throw in anything. he seems like a nice guy, but he is definately a business man! I have quite a few old vintage cars, but probably not a whole bunch that are alike. However, I'm wondering if an IROC race of "similar" cars might be acceptable? I might be able to put together 6 or 7 cars with old vintage chassis that use the same motors. In addition to the same type motors I could fit them with like gearing and rear tires. The final results would be cars that were similar in handling. It might be an opportunity for everyone to try different types of old vintage cars? -----------------Bill
Hey Rico, I don't think the details of the Tifosi IROC class have been finalized. It looks to me like that will be a separate series not connected to the NASTE Point Series. The EJ's kits are very cool and a super bargain! If we could get enough interest for maybe 3 other members to buy a kit, assemble it, and volunteer theirs for one of our IROC races I would go for that. I would be willing to volunteer one for our races. As far as something similar, I'll check through my old chassis, I may have enough of another vintage chassis to put together some similar cars. If anybody else has some old vintage 1/24 stuff they would be willing to use in our IROC races let me know. Maybe between a few of us we could race something different? I'll check this weekend and make a list of what I have available (Larry - this maybe our chance to get a vintage class going!!!!????). -----------------------------Bill
Monte, Do you mean the 1/24 Strombecker Cheetah kit I got from EJ's Hobbies? If so that's not a bad idea. Those kits are only $50 and they are 100% ready to assemble and race (same cost as the proposed 1/32 class at BSCC. And they are probably worth more than that on Ebay to collectors!). -----------------------Bill
I see we have 2 votes for "something else" in the poll for 1/24 IROC cars. How about some suggestions for "something else"? I'd like some more options!!! -------------------------Bill
Only two races left, but I'm gettin' close with a LEGAL HRS chassis..............Too little, too late!!! Oh well, it's sure been fun tryin'! ----------------Bill
John, I've already heard it was another great event! I'm sorry I had to miss it! --------------------Bill
Monte, You are a true racer!!!!!
I don't think I'd have the heart to crash one even if I had 6 of each! Besides, they really don't look like they were built to be run. It appears making them "race ready" was not a priority.... ---------------Bill
Thanks for the update David! --------------------Bill
Phwew, I was thinking maybe it was your "race" arm.....of course that could have been an advantage for the rest of us!!!! ----------------------Bill
Sounds good Rico, I'll put you guys down. I'm not sure when Bob will want to hold class, but I was thinking probably a week night. I'll let you know more when I find out more.........Broken arm? You or the wife????? --------------------Bill
No, I didn't notice. I haven't actually taken it out of the tin to take a good look at it. I was trying to figure out the differences between the Gurney and the McCluskey to see if I HAD to have both..... --------------Bill
Hey Rico, I got the blue Gurney model. It looks to me like the two have a few differences. The McCluskey model has side draft induction of some sort and two scoops on the top of the rear portion of the body (engine cover). I'm pretty sure mine will remain a "shelf queen" also. I can see where one minor "get-off" could result in a lot of damage! ------------------Bill
Subject: Hardbody Chassis Building Class
Racers, I made contact with Bob McFarland about having some 1/24 chassis building classes. Bob has been very busy this summer but he said he would be in "full slot car mode" in a couple weeks. What I'd like to find out is who and how many racers would be interested in attending some classes for building 1/24 hardbody chassis (I'm not talking about an exercise program here. Hardbody as in 1/24 scale model car bodies). If this is something you'd be interested in, shoot me an email, and please include when you would be able to attend (what days, times, etc.). The last classes Bob put on that I attended were on a weeknight. The classes were very interesting, fun, and I learned a lot! ---------------------------Bill
Have you all seen the new Sloter Lola T70s? I just got one. Man they are BEAUTIFUL! They have as much detail as some of the more expensive diecast cars I've seen! The only problem is I don't want to put it on the track! Somewhere along the line I've turned into a "collector" again! I hate that!..................But I just can't help myself!!! -------------------Bill
Thanks Rico, and yes I'll be out from time to time. There's just so much racing going on all around now that I can't make time for everything. In the past I haven't done any racing at all during the summer. These last couple of years I've worked in a bit more, but it's put me behind on everything else. Right now I'm just trying to make sure everything is set for the upcoming NASTE season. I keep telling myself one of these years I'm going to just race with some of the other clubs. For quite a few years I've been wanting to make more OSCAR races. The OSCAR races take more time and dedication for me. I'm not a fast car builder, and as you know I like to be at least somewhat competetive. So that means lots of time commitment for me to race the OSCAR events (again that's me). That's the one thing that has made the 1/32 scale cars so enjoyable for me. I can get the cars set up or built much quicker than I can build 1/24 OSCAR or PASER cars. The 1/24 NASTE cars have also filled a "time gap" for me. They are pretty quick and easy to build as well. Well, enough ramblin' on. I'll see you at the races! ------------------------Bill
I've found out from doing a LOT of racing, it's not what you're racing, it's who you're racing with that makes it fun!!!! ---------------------Bill
