Time to vent/complain. I now have purchased 4 complete wheel/axle assemblies for my GT3 McLaren and the latest one is the same as all the others: the spur gear slips on the axle. Upon further inspection the gears are not installed on the knurled part of the axle. If you move the gear over to the knurled part then there is tremendous side to side play and if you try to shim it then the entire assembly is not centered on the chassis/body. This is either a serious manufacturing error or they are being cheap and using an axle from a different application and calling it good enough. Well, it isn't.
I know I could use a different car and maybe not have the issue but this is the car I have and I don't really want to spend more money on a different car. The issue could be easily remedied with a Slot.it axle kit but as of now that is not a legal solution. Thanks for listening to me vent.

Thanks Monte and Victoria, I enjoyed my all too brief visit. Hopefully I can stay longer next time
I won't have any time off from work with my new job, especially since they are making an allowance by giving me time off for my trip to Austin. That being said, I really would like to participate but I will just have to wait and see if anything works out for maybe just Sat/Sun.
Well, I for one, certainly miss having you around and hope you find your enthusiasm again soon.
Kelly found this pic on SnapChat. If you look at the left front tire closely it appears the rubber tread is already starting to come off.

Chris did win the whole enchilada. The last race was a thriller with three fast cars and was a close race to the end. I was not able to attend the after party due to reasons beyond my control but both of the other cars were top 10, possibly 4th and 7th. Dennis did experience wheel failure in his last run and was VERY lucky to escape serious injury when the Flyer left the track and headed down a very steep bank. Luckily the nose of the car caught a root or low lying branch and stopped or his day could have been much worse. All in all a long day, but well worth it in the end.
I guess I misread it, I thought he was having trouble locating the correct gears. I assumed 132slotcars was out because he said he had been searching online and found none. Many vendors are indeed out of stock, but 132slotcar and ED do show to have them.
Not my first choice of vendor but Electric Dreams shows to have 36t BRM gears in stock.
Thanks for hosting Al, I had a most enjoyable evening.
Can we control individual lane voltage? Not on any of the tracks I know of that we race on, so I fail to see how that levels the playing field. If you just lower the voltage some motors will be more affected than others. The fact remains the simplest way is to put a RPM and tire size limit in place and go racing.
Most of the motors are rated at 12V and that is where they are designed to run. We are already running them below spec at 10V and if we go lower they are going to be real dogs especially on larger tracks. We won't need computer scoring, just a sun dial.
Who is going to police this? All of this complication to avoid switching motors, it would be easier to swap motors.
I will all of the above sentiments.
I just don't think a $90.00 starting/entry point is conducive to getting and keeping new people involved. Greg's and Monte's are both coupes so you are comparing apples and oranges and all the print I've seen is that they all very quick so Greg's is not an anomaly. The Classic Sports Car class rules need some restructuring and limiting all entries to 1964 and prior would be a good start. After that the tire and horsepower wars began transforming production based sports cars into purpose built racing machines altering racing for ever. It's time we make some adjustments to our classes to reflect this. I submit that we drop 18k motors from classic sports cars and limit them to 14k and 7mm tires. We could continue with the pod and non-pod divisions to help keep things compatible with the cars in use. I further submit that we should split the GT class into Modern and shall we say Vintage divisions. The Vintage division could cover the years 1965-1990 or ? The vintage division could serve as the place where we could run the ThunderSlot's, NSR's, Al's Greenwood Vette and the like with some sort of motor limit. (18-20k?) and the Modern division still kind of a catch all for everything else. These changes would better reflect racing history and mirror the increasing speeds achieved as time marched on, better aligning our classes to reality without banning certain brands or individuals creations.

I do NOT agree. So, if someone wants to win a Classic Sports car or CanAm race they would need to have a Thunderslot in order to have a shot? They are going to dominate from what I've seen and it would make it a one car class which equals: BORING.
wb0s wrote:Bad news is there probably won't be any Odd Thursday Night racers at my place. The flip side of course is that I should be able to win a few!
There won't be any or is that many racers? If it's any, you wouldn't even need a track and you could still win.
A legend in his own mind ;-)

I DO know how you feel Jeff. In my opinion, there are very few persons that can take up a new skill/hobby and be really good at it in the beginning. When I started racing slot cars with the NASTE group I certainly wasn't at the pointy end and sometimes I'm still not. That being said, I am fairly good repairing/tinkering with many forms of mechanical devices which I have been able to transfer into building/maintaining/racing slot cars. As far as "driving" slot cars the only way to get better is to practice, practice, practice. In the beginning I never thought I could catch, let alone, win against the likes of Bill, Monte, Flyin' Bryan to name a few but I kept trying and occasionally I can beat them. So keep on trying- you'll get there.
I do agree that some of our classes need some restructuring, especially the F1 and Classic Sports car. In my opinion we should down motor the Sports cars to make them run slower than some of them currently do. I also think it would make things simpler if we limited them to actual production cars and eliminate cars that were race cars first and street cars second. Any car that falls in the latter category can run in our GT class.

I have one and they work remarkably well.
Yes, a big Thank you is in order to Howie for lending us his fine facility for the afternoon and thanks to Chris/Monte for organizing the event. Always fun to give the BRM's a run, sorry I had to leave a little early as I really wanted to see how 'Ol Yella would fair with the Falcon7 motor. Maybe next time.

I really had no intention of creating a hornets nest with my previous comment, I apologize to all. However, I am opposed to letting Thunderslot and cars like it run in any class other than GT. These cars are purpose built racing machines and not simply toys like Fly, Scalextric and others and they do not compete at the same level. I know we have allowed de-motored, narrow tired cars to run in our Classic class but in my opinion it goes against the intent of the class even if it is within the rules. Classic Sports cars should not lap faster than modern GT's, Can-Am's, etc.
Yes, yes he did. It was bloody quick and I think we should ban them like NSR's or everyone is going to have to buy one. I may or may not have one on order…
Now that Bill is devoting less time to slot cars, he just might

Only one cure that I know of...
Our Classic Sports Car class is very close to IPS specs but we would have to down motor them to NC-1 specs and a few people have cars that are too new but other wise they are fairly spot on. Once down motored they would be pretty much the same as the TLOR tiddler class. I've thought for quite a while we should down motor this class and have a year cut off. Just my opinion for what it's worth.
