Topic: 2026 NASTE Halloween Race!

Last night we all got together for the Annual NASTE Halloween Race at Rapid Raceway. This was the 31st year of racing the Halloween themed race cars. This year we had 10 racers with entries in attendance. Describing the NASTE Halloween race is difficult. To say it is "different" is stating the obvious. To say "it must be experienced to be understood" is a lie. I've attended well over twenty of these races and I still do not fully understand why......Other than we all seem to have a great deal of fun! I don't think I have ever attended any other races that involved so much laughter! So I will dispense with the attempts to describe the event and just post the facts.

We raced two full rounds of 4 minute heat races. The first round was under daylight conditions. Terry's "what ever it was" (there was much speculation as to the theme of Terry's vehicle), lead the way throughout the entire first round. The "what ever it was" was definitely fast! Bryan was close in second, follwed by Bazowie (that alone is a great Halloween name!).

Having four NASTE Halloween vehicles on the track at one time in the daylight makes for some exciting racing! Four on the track at one time in darkness makes for total chaos! We learned years ago that good vehicle lighting is essential for racing in the dark! Terry's "what ever it was thing" was well lit and again lead the way! Bryan's veteran NASTE Halloween ride was again found chasing the leader. Something that vehicle is not accustomed to! Ken (Gearloose Jr.) showed up just in time to make the grid for the second round and finished in third just three laps ahead of Bazowie (Steve).

Re: 2026 NASTE Halloween Race!

Here are the final results for the NASTE Halloween Race of 2026:
1st Terry 307 laps
2nd Bryan 290
3rd Bazowie 272
4th Howie 250
5th Hammer 210
6th Hersch 158
7th Ken 128
8th Doug 118
9th Rico 33
10th Bill 14

A few things come to mind after this race. The Hammer (Dorothy) was by far the most consistent racer with her "eyeballs"........(Never mind).........She ran a solid 105 laps in EACH of the two rounds! Bazowie, with a little better luck could have taken the entire race!....Terry is always fast!......Racing in the dark gives Douglass headaches!......Howie has a great track!.........Hersche needs to be kept away from traction compounds!.......Rico and I have similar racing luck..........I should have tested my vehicle before arriving at the track.........Flyin' Bryan did not win this time..........and Ken should have showed up on time!

A big thanks to Howie for hosting yet again! A big thanks to Bryan for the pizzas! And of course a big thanks to Dorothy for the fantastic treats!

Re: 2026 NASTE Halloween Race!

This entry was piloted by Howie. It started it's NASTE Halloween life from its original creator Jeff Courtney some 30 years ago. It was brought back to life for this race mounted on top of a crushed '55 Chevy body.

Douglass' Pumkin Head returned to competition again this year! It was a strong runner!

This is Terry's "what ever it was thing" (you can see why I am hesitant to describe in more detail).

Front row left is Rico's entry. It was well lit for sure!

This was my Batman entry. This vehicle was built by Gerry Kaady on a vintage 1960s chassis. Had I done a better job of preparing it for the race I'm sure it would have done much better. It definitely looked good!

Thanks again Hoiwe! See you all next year!

Re: 2026 NASTE Halloween Race!

Thanks for the loaner car, Bill. The car is tall and was fun, especially when going under the bridge as it hit the underside of the bridge and made two rather loud strikes, one going in and one coming out, and the amazing thing is: it didn't come out of the slot!! It was a fun night of munching on candy (thank you Dorathy for making some delicious treats as usual) and BS'n and generally having a good time! In my opinion, winning isn't a great thing for this "race", FUN IS!!!

Re: 2026 NASTE Halloween Race!

I enjoyed the camaraderie, but my car’s performance not so much. Thanks to Howie for the track use.

Race cars are neither beautiful nor ugly. They become beautiful when they win.
