Topic: OSCAR Sportscars 4/26/2025

The OSCAR Sportscars returned to Springwater Raceway for the first time since November 2022.
19 racers came from not only the Portland / Vancouver vicinity, bur also from Bend, OR, Roseburg, OR and Seatle WA. Bob Hanna, owner of Sparetime Raceway in Roseburg, OR made the trek to participate and renew some old friendships. Kirk Smith, a local legend, provided his tech savvy and performed the duties of tech inspector and co-race director. It takes a team of people to pull a race with off with the nuances and challenges of utilizing all 8 lanes of Springwater Raceway. This was the first attempt to race on all 8 lanes since the track opened in 2019. With 19 racers, the group is divided into the “A” main and “B” main.
Qualifying, a 1-minute session with the fastest lap recorded for each racer determined which main event the racer would participate in. The race director would split the field in half. The starting position for each racer is chosen from the fastest time to the slowest time in each group. 10 racers would compete in the “B” main, and the winner would have to opportunity to move up the “A” main. The “A” main would consist of 10 racers competing for the overall win. The race consisted of 2 rounds of racing for each racer in both the “A” and “B” mains.
Each racer would have 64 minutes of drive time, except for the “B” main winner. That racer would have 128 minutes of drive time.  Bob Hanna, who won the “B” main, moved up to the “A” main. The Stig, Aka Michael Mitchell, was awarded the “B” main win. Both mains had close racing, bad crashes, cars flying off the track and broker racecars, then…….the power went out during the “B” main and everything came to a screeching halt and a dark, dead race program. What to do? Eat……. The group moved from the dark racetrack to a dining area with windows and we all ate lunch. The power came back on just as we were finishing lunch. Back to racing!!!!! Except, the prior unfinished race was lost. Every effort was made to bring it back. Nothing worked. It was decided to run 1 round to determine the “B” main winner. The “A” main went off as planned and the race was completed by 5pm. Plaques were awarded for 1st through 4th in each of the mains, fast qualifier, and racer’s choice.
The hard luck, to bad for you, bummer award was a choice of rear tires for having such misfortune and trials.
The results:
Fast qualifier: Tom Street – 5.309
“B” main winner: Bob Hanna 321.2 laps
“A” main winner: NakNak, Bob N. 659.9 laps
Racer’s Choice: Bob N. – White Enzo Ferrari

Re: OSCAR Sportscars 4/26/2025

Some highlights from the OSCAR race at Springwater Raceway!

Re: OSCAR Sportscars 4/26/2025

Bob Nak deserves a big congratulations and thanks from all of us racers, for putting on the biggest and best OSCAR race the Portland area has seen in years! This OSCAR Sports Car race had a total of 19 entries, with the majority of the racers from the east side of Mt. Hood!

http://www.naste.org/members/bill/SH2OOscarA2107.jpg

The entries broke down like this: 10 from the Bend area, 4 from the Portland area, 3 from Vancouver, 1 from Roseburg, and 1 from Seattle. The cars stacked up a lot like the racers with Ferraris accounting for 14 of the 19 entries.

Re: OSCAR Sportscars 4/26/2025

This race was typical of the traditional OSCAR races with a qualifying session kicking off the day's racing. Each racer got one minute of power on the blue lane to post their fastest possible lap. It sounds easy enough but, with all the other racers looking on it can be pretty intimidating and somewhat stressful!

Tommy was the top qualifyer with his Ferrari F50 posting a 5.309 second lap. Check out the look of concentration on Tommy's face!

Right behind Tommy was Stuart (Stew Meat) and his Ferrari 360 Modena. He was the only other racer to dip into the 5.3 second range with a 5.346, just .037 second behind Tom.

Re: OSCAR Sportscars 4/26/2025

The qualifying session progressed quickly and smoothly. Racers did a great job of paying attention to the "On Deck" information on the computer screen and being ready to hook up and run their laps. Bob (Nak Nak) posted a 5.409 second lap, good enough for third in qualifying. Everybody knows Bob is the guy to beat at Springwater, but Bob is pretty much the guy to beat WHEREVER he shows up! He is just a really good racer, and his cars are always well prepared!

HO Mike was right behind Bob's time at 5.555 seconds. When Mike shows up at a race, you KNOW it is going to be a good time!

Re: OSCAR Sportscars 4/26/2025

Mike G. is one of the newer racers in the Portland area. He is quickly becoming a great racer in addition to a great chassis builder! He qualified fifth with a 5.593 second lap. Mike's Enzo Ferrari featured a brass scratchbuilt chassis he constructed for this his first ever OSCAR race!

http://www.naste.org/members/bill/SH2OOscarA262.jpg

Curt is one of the most intense competitors I have ever raced with! His level of concentration is only matched by his level of preparedness! Nobody can set up or tune a chassis better than Curt! His qualifying lap was 5.595, good for sixth. Curt's Ferrari F50 body is the oldest OSCAR Sports Car still competing!

Re: OSCAR Sportscars 4/26/2025

Dennis (DC Dynamo) made the trip down from Seattle to race his Ferrari Enzo. Dennis is an awesome chassis builder specializing in lighter chassis designs by OSCAR standards. I don't know how, but he makes his light chassis work. I figure it must be magic! His best lap in qualifying was 5.605 seconds, good enough for seventh.

http://www.naste.org/members/bill/SH2OOscarA277.jpg

Korbyn, one of the racers from Bend, is about the nicest guy you could ever meet! I always enjoy seeing him at a race! I remember when I first met him he was just a kid and I could keep up with him most of the time. Now he routinely beats me! He is a good racer and hard to beat! He qualified eighth with his Ferrari Modena at 5.606 seconds, just .001 second behind Dennis! I was unable to get a photo of Korbyn during his qualifying run, because he was constantly moving his head watching his car lap the track. Every close up photo of him was blurry! His Modena somehow totally escaped the camera's lens.

Re: OSCAR Sportscars 4/26/2025

Bill H. is another new guy around the Portland area. His racing and building skills are improving quickly! He qualified for the "A" Main at nineth with a 5.722 second run in this his first OSCAR race. Bill successfully avoided my camera lens, but I did get a shot of his Audi.

http://www.naste.org/members/bill/SH2OOscarA263.jpg

Chris (Captain Chaos) qualified at the top of the "B" group with a 5.727 second lap. That's just .005 second out of the "A" Main. Chris had one of the coolest entries, a DeLorean. But instead of a Back To The Future movie theme, his car featured Batman driving! It seemed appropriate!

Re: OSCAR Sportscars 4/26/2025

Bart (Bartman) qualified his Ferrari Testarossa eleventh at 5.806 seconds. Bart is another Portland area racer that just keeps getting better and faster! I have no idea how that Ferrari made it into the Ochida Motorsports Ford camp!

http://www.naste.org/members/bill/SH2OOscarA291.jpg
http://www.naste.org/members/bill/SH2OOscarA267.jpg

Bad Billy, yup, that's me. They tell me that nick name is earned and justified.....go figure......I managed to qualify tweflth with a 5.812 second lap from my Ferrari Testarossa.

Qualifying thirteenth was Bob H. (Good Bob) with a 5.878 second run. Bob came all the way up to Springwater from Roseburg. Bob is an incredible racer, one of the most talented I've ever met! Bob races with an old Parma Turbo controller, wire wound resistor, and no electronic sensitivity or brake enhancements. He routinely wins with equipment considered by many as obsolete! Oh, and his Ferrari Modena featured a Sealed 16D motor!

Re: OSCAR Sportscars 4/26/2025

Michael M. (The Stig) is one of the fast racers from the Bend area. He posted a 6.007 second qualifying run. Turns out his fourteenth place qualifying attempt was the result of a slipping gear, something he was able to repair during the race. I believe he was racing his Ford GT40.

http://www.naste.org/members/bill/SH2OOscarA283.jpg
http://www.naste.org/members/bill/SH2OOscarA268.jpg

Forrest (Not Gump) also made it over from Bend. He is one of the regular fixtures at Tom's World in Bend. He is always competitive and in the top tier of racers anywhere he goes. Not to mention he is a very nice guy! Forrest qualified fifteenth at 6.054 seconds. Unfortuanately I don't remember which car Forrest raced. Sorry Forest...

http://www.naste.org/members/bill/SH2OOscarA292.jpg

Re: OSCAR Sportscars 4/26/2025

Jimmy F. is one of the newer racers from Bend. He showed us some driving talent by qualifying sixteenth at 6.055 just .001 second behind Forrest. Jimmy is also currently constructing a new routed 1/24 four lane track in his shop. I've seen the pictures and it is looking really good!

http://www.naste.org/members/bill/SH2OOscarA285.jpg
http://www.naste.org/members/bill/SH2OOscarA270.jpg

Kevin L. from Bend was a first time racer at Springwater Raceway. He qualified his Corvette in seventeenth with a lap of 6.062 seconds. HO Mike was claiming Kevin was his son.....I'm not so sure! He seemed much nicer than Mike! (Just kidding)....

Re: OSCAR Sportscars 4/26/2025

Al (Meat) was the eighteenth qualifier with a time of 6.091 seconds. Al owns Rippin' Ridin' Raceway in Portland where he holds the NASTE Point Series Championship races for 1/32 cars. He just happens to be the current point leader in that series!

http://www.naste.org/members/bill/SH2OOscarA297.jpg
http://www.naste.org/members/bill/SH2OOscarA266.jpg

Jim M. rounded out the qualifying list at nineteenth posting a 6.412 second lap. Jim builds beautiful brass chassis! He will be the first to state he builds them and his son Michael drives them! Together they are a formidable team!

Re: OSCAR Sportscars 4/26/2025

Thanks Bill for the excellent coverage of the race. I will never forget how fun this event was to put on and race in. A win is just icing on the cake.
