If anyone is interested in going to the Memorial Race at Rich Vecchio's Electron Raceway in Roseburg on June 6th, I have a seat available for car pooling!
The next stop on the 2022 McFarland Memorial Track Tour is on August 20th at Pelican Park Raceway in Eugene!
The location of Pelican Park is BEHIND 855 S. 57th St./Drive, Springfield, just west of the Bob Straub Parkway and 57th is the first light south of E. Main on that Parkway.
Turn west (right) at that light and take 57th up the hill for about a block. There will be a sign on the east side of 57th at the drive that leads back to the track.
• In honor of Bob McFrland's favorite class to race at Pelican Park, we will be racing "BIG NASCAR", and using 'Super' motors. All cars are expected to start the event with a 0.055" track clearance
• 10am = doors open at PPS for practice and registration. There will be a $10 registration fee for participants who are NOT members of the PPS 'KeyClub' who pay $40/month dues.
• 1pm = racing starts with each racer pulling a chip from "The Rattler" to determine your start position for your first heat race with each participant getting 4 qualifying heat races to achieve a "win" in a heat race, and you must "win-to-get-in" to the 'fast - 8'
• Each heat is 50 laps long, and your finish in each heat will determine where you start in your next heat. In the first half of the program, Qualifying heats will determine who is in the 'Fast-8' ('win to get in'). Depending on how many folks more than 8 decide to join us for this event, we will have Semi's, a Consi and Main for the "Hooligans", the group of the racers who didn't win in the first half, so didn't get into the 'fast 8' program, but now qualify for the 'Slo-8' program'.
• 3-ish - 4-ish pm should be a break after the determination of the 'fast-8', likely w/food (pizza?)
• We will return to racing after the break to finish with Semi-Mains, Consi(s), (2 or more depending on numbers of racers), and finally the Main Event, anticipating 'done' by 6-ish pm?
Please contact me, Tom Snyder, at 541/953-8951, phone of text, with questions or suggestions about this upcoming event!
I am assuming "Big Nascar" means our usual Large wheel late model cars?

I am assuming "Big Nascar" means our usual Large wheel late model cars?
Zack
Zack, "Big NASCAR" in Pelican Park terms does not refer to "big wheels". I'm not exactly sure why they refer to it as "Big NASCAR". The times I raced there with Bob, John, and Stuart we raced our OSCAR cars.
Pelican Park Speedway Big NASCAR Rules:
To provide continuity, construction ease, low cost control, and effective tech management, chassis development is limited to scratch built brass 90 degree in-line motor-gear mounting, utilizing stock, unaltered Parma 16D or Pro-Slot 2002 stock motors.
Chassis must at all times maintain a minimum of .055" track clearance. All tires shall be black, be no less than 3/4" diameter, and all must touch and roll.
Tires /rims shall not protrude more than 1/16" outside the plane of the wheel openings at any time when viewed from above. The plane of a wheel opening is located at the narrowest point on the fender when viewed from directly above. Guide flags shall not protrude beyond the plane of the nose when viewed from directly above.
No body mods, channeling, chopping, or body widening, or adding fender valences are allowed, and the body shall be stock thickness. Body configuration and roofline must be production stock. Front and rear windows supplied with the kit must be installed, though side windows may not be.
Entire heads of driver figures (injected or resin mold) must appear higher than the lower window frame, A Cockpit or cabin tray concealing the entire chassis is required, and for open cockpit cars where the prototype carried one, a roll bar must be installed.
All cars should bear race numbers and other markings reflecting prototype appearances.
NASCAR stock cars run with Parma Super 16-D motors to compensate for their additional weight of 9 to 10 ounces, about 1 to 2 ounces more than sports or GTO cars.
PPS/GCR - Rules for Big Nascar • The Rest ...
• Big NASCAR :1980 to the present,
Cup Cars - Winston, Sprint, Nationwide, Nextel, Busch, COT series cars .
(Must use Super-16 motors.)
In addition to the Boilerplate Rules at the beginning of this book that all cars/classes must honor, these specific rules apply to all cars raced at Pelican Park in the Big Nascar class.
• Wheel openings - may not be modified in any way .
• Wheel arch requirements - With the body appropriately mounted to the chassis with a .055” track clearance, the highest point of the rear wheel arches must be a minimum of .900” (29/32”) above the track surface, and the highest point of the front wheel arches are a minimum of 1.0” above the track surface. In order to meet the wheel arch rules (above), a body may be raised, lowered, or the rake adjusted by altering the bottom edge (“rocker panel”) of the body between the wheel openings. If the wheel arches are legal after the above mentioned rocker-panel alterations but the front spoiler or the rear valance below the bumper are touching the track, the spoiler and/or the rear valance may be trimmed to meet the .055” clearance.
• Windows – The front, rear, and rear-side windows supplied with the model kit must be installed. The passenger-side main window and the driver’s side window netting are not required to be mounted in place. Excess window plastic may be trimmed off.
The “original” rules for Big Nascar state this:
“There are certain legal bodies that will not meet the minimum height at the wheel openings described above even though they are completely un-altered. Such bodies may be raced, but must remain unaltered with respect to the lower edge of the body between the wheel openings.” Check with the group of 3 to clarify.
The results and report for stop number five were posted in a different place on this forum, and I forgot to get my photos from the race uploaded. Here are the details and photos from round 5 of the McFarland Memorial Track Tour at Electron Raceway in Roseburg:
Ten racers made it out for the Monday evening event. Seven local racers and three out-of-towners. Rich's beautiful track is tricky and challenging, especially for the out-of-towners (who came to be known as The Three Garys; Gary T., Scarey Gary, and The Turd Gary. I suppose you can guess who the Turd was....).
In addition to Rich being entered in the race, Bob Hanna was in attendance, which meant there were some seriously fast racers on hand! Rich allowed both the usual for Roseburg racing, big wheel style Trans Am cars as well as the OSCAR spec Trans Am cars to compete. The cars entered to race were beautiful to look at! All of them were very nicely painted and detailed! Once the racing began it was clear that Bob Hanna and Rich were the guys to beat! I couldn't believe how quickly they could get around that technical course! In the end it was Bob Hanna victorious over Rich Vecchio. Following those two were Ron Leuenberger, Lowell Buehner, and Mark Colby. The top five finishers received some very cool awards hand made by Rich.
In addition to the standard style of distance over time racing, Rich has a computer program he uses to determine finish positions by handicap. So at the completion of the race, some of us less skilled racers have a chance to finish a little higher in the secondary results, based on our actual performance average over our "handicap". It's an interesting system, and well to be honest, it worked out well for me! Thank you for hosting a great race Rich, and another tribute to Bob McFarland!
You can read Rich's full race write-up complete with more photos here on Slot Blog: http://slotblog.net/topic/100544-mcfarl … n-on-6622/

Round 6 of the McFarland memorial Track Tour was held at Pelican Park Speedway in Eugene on August 20th, 2022. We had a really good turnout with racers from Roseburg and Portland as well as the usual Pelicans. The class of cars chosen to compete at this event were the Pelican Park Big NASCARs. This class was a favorite of Bob McFarland's and he made many trips down to Pelican Park to compete in their Wednesday Night race program.
For their Saturday memorial race Pelican Park ran their normal Wednesday night race program which consists of 50 lap heat races in a ladder type format. This format provides some fast and furious racing! Every heat counts as points are scored for finish positions in each heat race.
In the end Gary Tipton posted the win, followed by Bob Hanna and Gary Klein. A big thanks to all the Pelican Park members for hosting this event! It was a very good time!
This is the home of the Pelican Park track. A low profile building once located in the middle of nowhere, is now surrounded by new housing developments.
The only clue as to what waits inside!
And just inside the door.......
All four walls are FULLY decorated!
This is the section of the track that gives me the most problems!
Left to right: Al, Tom, Paul, and John running some practice laps.
Al Prepping his car for one of the 50 lap heats.
L - R: John, Bob, Deke.
In the heat of the race: Gary, 'Basil', John, and James driving, with Gary T. watching from behind.
Final Stop in the McFarland Memorial Track Tour 2022 at Inslot's Checkered Flag September 24, 2022!
In Bob McFarland's honor, the feature race for this event will be a Sports Car race for cars that comply with PASER rules.
Preceding the feature race there will be a short race for Trans Am cars. This is a Trans Am challenge race put forth by the racers in Roseburg for all the other "hardbody" clubs/organizations in the Northwest.
The race director will set the racing field by using the random placement option on the computer program
.
Motors: Any D can motor up to and including S16D open large arm for any class. Stock falcon style FK motors may also be used. No shunting, no shimming. Arm must be labeled. No outlaw unlabeled American arms
Race information is as follows:
Doors open at 7:30 A.M. on race day for practice
These general rules will apply to the day's racing but, this event is meant to be a day of remembrance more than anything. With that in mind please be respectful of the rules, but keep in mind they will not be strictly enforced:
No qualifying or tech inspection.
Race Director will seed participants.
Race will be stopped to allow a competitor to address a mechanical or other problem without penalty.
Race Director will allow competitors ample time between heats.
Racers may work on their cars at anytime during the race provided there are adequate turn marshals available.
Racing will begin promptly at 11 A.M. with the Trans Am Challenge Race. This will consist of one round of 3 minute heat races for Trans Am Class cars that comply with the rules under PASER, OSCAR, Northwest True Scale, Pelican Park, or the Roseburg tracks.
Lunch will be provided and served immediately following the Trans Am Race. The anticipated time for the lunch break is 1:00 pm, dependent upon attendance. The lunch will be BBQ style prepared by chef Patrick Handy featuring Checkered Flag style hamburgers (cheap and easy!).
After the lunch break the race for the PASER Production Sports Car Class will begin. The race Format will be 2 times through with either 3 or 4 minute heats (depending upon number of entries). The race format will be finalized the day of the event with a 6:00 PM maximum finish time as the goal.
We will have a good selection of loaner cars available for the Sports Car race for anyone that does not have a car for this class (some were actually built by Bob!).
Bob was one of the key motivating personalities for club racing in Oregon. Were it not for Bob many of the current tracks and clubs would not exist, as well as many of the friendships we have established over the years! Therefore I feel it is only fitting that this invitation be extended to anyone that races or is interested in slot car racing throughout Oregon.
==========Bill
Sorry to hear that you had to cancel the last race. hope you feel better soon Bill. maybe you need to eat more of my salsa to clean you out..
