Ok, who's your buddy?

http://www.naste.org/members/monte/chassisbalancingpoints.jpg

I agree with Andre's approach with a team driving two lanes at the same time - then the fuel management isn't so much an issue of fairness.  Also with the fuel management, as Bill states, a little longer heat does seem in order.

I also agree that drivers need to use their own car since that's how they got to their seed in the first place.  Otherwise we're pretty much back to IROC.

The way to have "qualifying" without sandbagging is as described above - you just need to assign points to each segment - team and individual.  No one will sandbag with points at stake.

I would prefer a two-race format with a short sprint for qualifying - perhaps it's one heat each of two minutes and we draw for lanes or just go for random assignment with the computer - followed by a longer team race.

If there were 20 racers, the sprint portion would only take about 15 minutes to run.  We could spend more time than that bitching about the team alignment.  tongue

Then you could run 10-minute heats with fuel set for about the half-way point.  Both drivers would be on the track similar to the Timba Enduro so each driver would only drive two lanes.

Score points for each segment.

I understand the idea there George but I don't think the negative points really have much value vs. just counting the points like normal.

The problem comes in trying to alter a points system mid-stream.  Never a successful idea.  In the example above, 4 different racers scored more than 20 points which would put a lot lower value on the first two results.  We can adjust the system but it has to max out at 20 points to match up with the first two events.

We could move to a 10 points per race system with every racer getting at least 1 point.  That would max out at 20 total for the two races and keep it a little closer since you will never be more than 9 points behind the leader.  No skip at the top so 10, 9, 8, etc.

I like George's idea better.  But how do you score the evening?  Do racers get points for each event?

Oh, and no, you can't stay on Art's team.  You weren't supposed to be on his team in the first place.  Un-seeded racers are supposed to fall into the middle where they can't influence the top teams by offering an unfair swing in the balance of power.  That's the reason we have seed races every so often - to shift the balance of power as needed.  Drivers and cars improve, new ones show up.

So how are you going to even up the driving time with fuel management using either the same amount of fuel per lap or an amount based on speed per lap?  Neither will work.  What works is time.  If you take off the same amount per lap and racer A drives faster than racer B, then racer B still gets more time because racer A uses still uses less time to burn the same gas.  It's RELATIVE!

What will work is to have a timed swap point.

I offer a reasonable solution:

[b]Each team runs one set of 12 minute heats.[\b]
For a 9 team race like last night that would be a total run-time of 108 minutes or slightly less than two hours.  Add 12 minutes for each extra team.

[b]Set a fuel change of 30 seconds at the 5:45 mark.[\b]
This way each driver gets the exact same amount of time - exactly 5:45.  And the races won't take any longer than they do now.

Wow, that's a great idea.  There must be somebody in the group that could use a track.  Especially with being able to have some input into the process.  And routed wood at that.  That was a great track we ran on this weekend in Auburn.

Darn...  a check of the garage shows there's already three tracks there and another one in boxes.  I'm out of room.  Heck!  What's a boy to do?

Wow, that was a day or two.  Get a rally stolen from us, get a new slot car track given to us and then get to spend a great day with good friends enjoying our hobby.  It was a lot of driving but the new track is tucked safely into the garage and it was a really great time.

John, your new track is super.  Way smoother than the old one and it must have been easier to drive too.  Why if only I could have smacked Tony once or twice...

Tell Derek and Chrissy thanks from Team Leader 2.  They did great.  Derek was just flying.  And anyone that can race and make all that food at the same time!  Amazing.

What a guy.  Everything has performance possibilities.  I love that!

Do you need help Sunday taking that track apart?

So is anyone interested in a classic formula car series?  Perhaps a spec with a sub-20k motor and skinny tires.

I've been able to assemble a few possible entrants.  To date I have:

Cooper
Ferrari
Vanwall

All are ready to race and able to adjust to a reasonable spec.  I have at least half a dozen others in the queue.  Might be a fun stock class for the NASTE Thursdays.

Yes, that's pretty clear.

I think we pretty much had our fill of the Scaley cars at the Enduro.  We tried running them in the dark and as the race went on they all just got slower until it was mostly hammer down all the way around.  My opinion is that their cars lack personality.  They all pretty much drive the same.

Very cool stuff George.  Those Scaley guides really do suck.  I fixed up Victoria's Subie that had the blue guide blade using a Slot.It universal with the screw.

A big thanks to Bill and Diane for providing us a great final event to the 2009 season.  And also a big round of applause was heard at the conclusion of the event in honor of Fantasy World Tony for generously sending us down his 4 Racer Ferrari 250 LM's for the race.  They were a hit and everyone realized just how special they were.  Easy to drive and very competitive, all the drivers enjoyed running those cars on the Bullring.  Total devastation was limited to a headlight lens that popped off and a loose wire that we fixed.  And yes, the tires did last however I would say they are pretty well finished.

Congratulations to Bryan Trachsel, the 2009 NASTE Season Champion who wrapped up the season despite a less than impressive 6th place finish.  In fairness, a few roadblocks were placed in his way...

And this time Bill was the man!  Driving at a pace that no one else could manage, his first set of heats was the top run of the night besting the second place finisher (me!) by two laps.  I spent part of the drive home trying to figure out where I could have gotten two more laps and couldn't find it.  He was just too fast!

Then there was Dorothy's Chocolates.  Mmm-mmm good!

What a night and what a season.

Yes, the final three races are added to the other possibilities so that everyone can arrange to have x-number of results prior to the finals.  Then the finals are three IROC races that all count.

So for instance...  we count your top 9 finishes.  To do this you have to run on at least 5 different tracks.  However, let's say you run an entire Beaverton season.  You can pick out your two best finishes there and count those as part of your total - only 7 to go.  Now at the conclusion of the season you have your 9 best counting events.  Then the final three IROC's will be added to that.  Here's why...  We did a similar thing in SCCA but they did not have a final three system.  Everyone just accrued points.  There were TONS of ties at then end of the season and they quickly adjusted to a finals system the following year.  This almost assures you there will be no ties.

And this doesn't mean that NASTE can't still sponsor events.

However as the "head" of the process it would serve us well to continue with IROC races.  It's a good way to bring in new people.  We can also expound on the virtues of IROC racing to some of the other groups.  Those that have hosted NASTE races this past season all enjoyed the IROC format.  Especially when we supplied the cars!

Well, the idea is that it will be the same for everyone.  With the limit of two races per track even the 1/24 guys are going to have to branch out.  I imagine the HO guys might have an even tougher time finding enough HO events.  And maybe there's the possibility of running a 1/32 scale race on a larger type wood track.  We just have to pick the track(s) and work out the details with the track owner.

It's very possible for folks to get out and get enough events that it will come down to the final three days of IROC to decide the champ.  Consider that the PSSRA folks race EVERY Wednesday.  But once again, there's the track limit.  Max of 2 counting results per track.

And of course the more events you run at a variety of tracks, then the more chance you have of getting a group of good results to add to your score.

Bottom line, most of us will have to go outside our particular "field".

And what's wrong with that?

We haven't even addressed the drag racers...  Where's Jeff?

I firmly support this.

At the conclusion of the NASTE Cup "season".  We'll also hold the three final EXTRA counting events.  One in each scale run IROC style.  The finale is planned for three consecutive nights with many other features included as well.  Consider it a slot car year end banquet with all the trimmings.

As for sanctioning, the event would have to be posted to the NASTE site at least one month prior to the event to give everyone interested a fair opportunity to attend.

That also prevents situations where Monte and Victoria go out into the garage and call it a race...

And if Bill left out your club or organization, our goal is to make this available to any within the Northwest - Oregon, Washington or Idaho.
