Saturday a few of us got together for the OSCAR Sports Car race at Springwater Raceway. Springwater proved to be an awesome venue for this class of cars. The 140 foot long, fast track provided for some very close racing!

I just put in an order to Team Bluegroove for six Porsche 962 bodies. If you need one let me know and I will set it aside for you.

You were getting your cars and skill on the new layout dialed in by the end of the race!

We had 10 racers in the NWTS TA2 Class, including two long distance travelers from the Seattle area. It was the first time some of the racers had turned a wheel on the track's new layout configuration, so as you can imagine the first round of racing was action packed! Our Seattle friends Craig and Dennis stole the show by whooping us all!

The backup class race was for the NWTS Can Am cars. And again Craig and Dennis showed us how it's done! What do we have to do to beat these guys?

Sorry I didn't get more photos!

The other car Rob brought with him was this beautiful Monogram Scarab. Although Monogram re-released this as a model kit a few years back, Rob re-built this car from an original '60's slot car. Rob used the later Monogram model kit wheel inserts, and polished the aluminum wheels to match. This is a very nice restoration!

http://www.naste.org/members/bill/IMG_4388rob.jpg

Rob said the difference between colors of the factory molded bodies is amazing. The early slot car bodies has much more metallic and the blue is much darker.

Rob stopped by the other day with a couple of new builds.

First up is this 1/24 Strombecker D Jag. This car was built from the static model kit that can also be powered by a cheap battery powered electric motor. Rob adapted this kit body to a slot car chassis. Anybody that has seen or put one of these kits together knows how difficult it can be to assemble. The body is a two piece clam shell design and the pieces do not fit together very well. Rob did a beautiful job of blending the top and bottom halves together. His objective was to blend the two pieces together just well enough to eliminate the gaps, but yet retain just a hint of a seam that shows on the real car.

http://www.naste.org/members/bill/IMG_4374rob.jpg

The Strombecker D Jag is an old model kit. There were not a lot of detail parts, and as previously stated the fitment of the parts is not all that great. The tail lights are molded into the body piece. Rob did an excellent job of paint detailing those tail lights for some added realism.

http://www.naste.org/members/bill/IMG_4375rob.jpg

The underside of the body was a full belly pan. The optional electric motor mounted in this lower portion which also served as the chassis. Rob cut out the bottom of the body in a way that makes it resemble an actually slot car body from the '60's. He used a Monogram chassis which he restored and modified to fit.

http://www.naste.org/members/bill/IMG_4381rob.jpg

The amount of work Rob put into this beauty is amazing! Rob commented that the headlight lenses were especially challenging because they do not fit into any type of bucket or insert. The lenses mount flush with the body with nothing behind them. Rob even located some vintage wheels that were large enough to replicate the tall wheel and tire combination of the real car, then he added inserts made from the kit wheels. Outstanding!

"That last picture of my is very flattering thanks Bill! It looks like I am a grumpy old man, you all are rubbing of on me quickly." MrM_Bell

I'm happy to say you fit right in!!!!

Thanks for letting me punt you a couple times..........

It was so nice to see a few racers together at Springwater Raceway again! A few of us showed up to race Northwest True Scale spec TA2 class cars, and a new class for us, the 4.5" Flexi COT NASCARs. The racing was really close in both classes and it looked like everyone had a great time! COVID precautionary guidelines were strictly adhered to!!!

Today John Gill and I finished up some last details on his new 3 lane routed track. John and I built this track over the last few weeks. Actual time spent to complete the construction was approximately 8 days total. The layout is a simple, with no overpass and a minimum of corners. John wanted a track for testing his 1/24 hard body race cars as well a track for racing 1/32 cars. John used recessed magnetic braid for the electrical contact.

We also added a built in test strip in one corner of the track. The test strip is controlled by a toggle switch, features a high amp potentiometer for speed control, and an indicator light to let racers know the test strip is powered up.

http://www.naste.org/members/bill/IMG_4157JG.jpg

John used Slot Car Corner controller hook ups. When ordered as a kit it comes with terminal blocks, screws, electrical connectors, and wire. One thing to note is; if you are planning to run 1/24 cars with S16D motors, the circuit breakers supplied by Slot Car Corner will not work. They cannot handle the current needed to run super 16 Ds and will trip. We removed the circuit breakers from the positive side of the circuit, but left them in the brake circuit to protect controllers.

This is the test strip set up we built.
