Got the second quart of magnetic primer on the track this evening. Found that just a plain ole stir stick works the best for mixing. The tool for my variable speed drill was a waste of time and money for this stuff!!!

Yes, I'm looking for some magnetic attraction, something much lower than plastic track though. The only reason I'd like any magnetic attraction at all is to provide more options for classes. In my opinion, some magnetism to the track will allow for better "box stock" racing for some of the various makes and models of cars available. And another aspect is, at one of your races Monte, you had the kids and some of the new racers race cars that had traction magnets against some of us more experienced racers racing cars with no traction magnets. I found that to be a lot of fun, and from what I saw of the less experienced racers, they seemed to enjoy being able to race head to head with the more experienced racers, regardless of the fact they had a slight advantage. I would like to try some racing in that format. And lastly, I want to run some late model F1 cars, and I feel magnetic traction is appropriate for that class. The real F1 cars perform like they are magnetically attached to the track, so (again in my opinion) the performance of the F1 slot cars with magnetic traction would provide the higher level of performance befitting of the class. Bottom line is it's all about options. With a track that has magnetic attraction I have more options. ---------------------Bill

No, this is the underlying primer, multiple coats. I am going to use the same paint The Professor used on his track in Auburn for the top coat.
Although for a slot car track, I think this magnetic paint would make a nice surface to run on. The texture is similar to the old blackboard texture they used to have in the early days of slot car tracks.

This evening I applied the first coat of Rustoleum Magnetic Primer to the track running surface. This stuff ain't cheap ($22.50 per quart), and it is some nasty stuff (no pun intended!). The single quart got me one coat over the entire length of the track, and a second coat on four of the turns. If you use this stuff be sure to have them shake it well on the paint shaker before you take it home to apply. When you're applying it, stir it often! The heavy stuff settles to the bottom of the can quickly. It is REALLY thick and gooey, almost like grease!
So does it work?......Well, a neo bar type traction magnet sticks to the track where I have two coats fairly well, at least when it is layed directly on the track surface. I'd say the magnet strength is close to what an old stock Aurora HO pancake motor magnet has when placed on a steel surface (so I guess not much really). Where there is only one coat of primer the neo magnet will stick, but just barely. I am going to invest in one more quart of the primer and see what improvement I can make with that.

There are a couple more areas where I will probably lay down some more base color......but at this point I am ready to try rolling on the Rustoleum "Magnetic" Paint Primer. After that primer it's time for the track's running surface paint.

This year we have 11 race dates, plus the annual NASTE Halloween Race at Hemi Heights Raceway Park (as always the Halloween race is a non-points race). Here's the breakdown of the races so far:
1 - HO race
5 - 1/32 races (1 of which is a digital race)
4 - 1/24 races
There is one race date not yet scheduled - Feb.18, 2012. If you are a track owner and would like to host a NASTE race, please drop me a line. -----------------Bill

Saturday morning and it's break time. Tryin' to finish up the last bit of plaster, then a little prep sanding and I'm ready for the final coat of Kilz primer. After the Kilz dries it'll be a little bit of base color on the landscaping, and then the track surface finish work starts. Stayed tuned for paint work. -----------------Bill

Last Sunday at Monte's digital enduro we held a meeting to discuss the NASTE 2012 racing season. We decided on 12 race dates, and so far I have 7 different tracks on the list for next season, Monte's 1/32 analog & digital tracks, Jeff's 1/24 track, Larry's 1/24 track, Rico's 1/32 track, and Randy's 1/32 track, for a total of 6 tracks. And, as a surprise Tony from Fantasy World Hobbies said they would like to host a NASTE race in Seattle on their 1/32 track! There is also a possibility 4 more tracks may be added to the list.
So here are the race dates: Race #1 Sept.17, #2 Oct.8, #3 Oct.29 (Halloween Race - non-points and reserved for Jeff's Hemi Heights Raceway Park), #4 Nov.19, #5 Dec.10, #6 Jan.7, #7 Jan.28, #8 Feb.18, #9 Mar.10, #10 Mar.31 (tentative - provided it does not conflict with the Portland Swap Meet), #11 Apr.21, #12 May12.
I will be emailing the dates to the track owners for them to select the date they would like to host their race. As soon as we have the commitments I will post the schedule. Get ready for a great season! -------------------Bill

Topic: Ninco Ferrari 360 GTC Pro Race Kit (5 replies, posted in Cars)
So, I finally got around to assembling my Ninco Ferrari 360 Pro Race Kit. I upgraded the rear axle, gears, and rear wheels to Slot.It parts (my personal opinion is; Ninco parts are junk - very nice bodies and motors, but everything else is pretty much junk). Anyway, I get it all done, broken in on my bench top power supply, and out to Monte's I go for testing. Ran a few laps with my Ninco Porsche 997 (which has upgraded NSR parts - even better) to get a baseline for performance measurement. Onto the track goes the Ferrari, things are looking promising. Lap times are very close to the Porsche and the Porsche is much more sorted out. Then on about lap 7 or 8, out of the last corner and onto the front straight, halfway down the straight, clunk, and all stop. Hmmm, looks to be setting kinda weird, not quite level. Yup it's broke, back in the box and transported home.
This evening I tore it down. Both rear axle carrier uprights were broken, blown clear out. Monte told me this was a common problem with the clear lexan plastic chassis. He said they need to be braced before you even try to run them. Well now I'm in repair mode. My plan is to do the same type of repair I made a couple years ago to my Scalextric A1 GP car that suffered from a similar problem. I will use brass tubing epoxied in place as a bearing carrier for the rear axle. I will also brace the back of the chassis as Monte suggested so I don't break anything else! --------------Bill
