Another Odd Thursday night of racing here at TooBad Motorplex on June 5th. The racing was really close tonight with a tie for first place in the GT Class, and only 1/10th of lap separating first from second in the BRM Porsche Class. Three different racers took a first, and Mitch Brooks was on the podium in the Classic Sports Car Class. Highlights included; Monte Saager running most of his heat races himself, as himself without an assigned driver, and Chris Kouba made it to the race by boat! That is definitely a first!
Here's how all the racing shook out:
Classic Sports Car Class:
1st Goose Gossett 53.1 laps
2nd Rico Locati 52.2
3rd Mitch Brooks 50.0
4th Terry Abbott 48.3
5th Chris Kouba 48.1
6th Bill Bostic 47.6
7th Monte Saager 47.4
8th Greg Petrolati 47.2
GT Class:
1st tie Chris Kouba 59.1 laps
1st tie Goose Gossett 59.1
3rd Rico Locati 57.1
4th Terry Abbott 56.1
5th Bill Bostic 55.1
6th Monte Saager 54.2
7th Greg Petrolati 54.1
8th Mitch Brooks 49.8
BRM Porsche 962 Class:

May 29th, and another action packed Odd Thursday evening! The Classic Sports Car Class was raced for the first time with the new motor spec rule in place. Two scratchbuilt cars set the pace for the race. Rico Locati took first place with his 1955 Frazier Nash, with Greenman Greg Petrolati just one lap back with his beautiful Ferrari (second place in it's first race - outstanding!). With the new motor spec for the class, Ninco Classic Corvettes seemed to be the out-of-the-box car for rest of the field. The Ninco Corvettes are very competitive with nothing more than a rear tire change.
The racing in the GT Class was very close. Race conditions were optimum with good grip on the track, which many evenings is not the case! Chris Kouba destroyed the competition with his super quick Slot.It Ford GT. Chris out ran the field by three full laps to take the win. Most of the GT Class was made up of Slot.It cars. Like the Ninco Classic Corvettes, the Slot.It cars perform very well at TooBad with just a little tuning and rear tire changes.
The action in the BRM Porsche Class for intense as usual! Chris Kouba brought out his new BRM Mercedes to see how it would run against the BRM Porsches. The anglewinder chassis'd Mercedes did seem to have a little advantage over the Porsches, but not a great deal. It looked like some of the advantage was the difference in motors versus chassis configuration. Chris is studying our current rules to see what he can do to include the Mercedes and still make the inline Porsche 962s competitive. Chris did take the win in the BRM Porsche Class with his inline 962 by a mere nine tenths of a lap over Rico Locati. Third place was only another seven tenths back from Rico. The BRMs provide for some very close, action packed racing on TooBad Motorplex's tight three lane course.
Here's how all the racing shook out:
Classic Sports Car Class:
1st Rico Locato 52.0 laps
2nd Greg Petrolati 51.3
3rd Chris Kouba 49.6
tie - 4th Goose Gossett 48.6

4th John Fisher 53.8
5th Bryan Dickerson 53.1
6th Goose Gossett 52.4

Re: NASTE Odd Thursday Night Racing Rules & Current Thread (2,172 replies, posted in NASTE)
Rule Change to Classic Sports Car Class -
After much discussion a rule designating motor maximum RPM has been added to the Classic Sports Car Class. Motor RPM will be limited to motors producing no more than 18,000 RPM. There is a link to the Slot Car Motor List on this website's Links page. Most Ninco motors fall into this category, specifically those fitted to the Ninco classic sports cars. This new rule will be implimented just as the current Traction Magnet rule is. Racers may run a Classic Sports Car with a higher RPM rated motor. However once they have won a Classic Sports Car race with the higher RPM motor, they will no longer be elligible for an Official Classic Sports Car Class win using a motor rated above the 18,000 RPM limit. You can continue to race with the faster motor, you just can't record a win with it. Subsequent wins will result in disqualification. A hard copy of the Slot Car Motor List will be posted and available for referrence at TooBad Motorplex.
The Classic Sports Car rear tire spec has been updated/changed to a millimeter measurement instead of decimal inch.
That's it. -----------------------------Bill

Re: Modified Carrera Corvette (9 replies, posted in Modifications)
Thanks Rico. Initial test was pretty good. Much better than a stock Carrera anyway! I had a little body rub at the rear tires. I did some clearancing so I think it will be ok now. Made a cardstock interior tray for it this evening. I probably won't get a chance for another test run until Thursday evening..........

Re: NASTE @ Rapid Raceway on May 3rd 2014 - Race no.16 (10 replies, posted in NASTE)
That's a good point Howie. Since the track prep was the same as the last time the '55s were raced, I was thinking the temperature might have had something to do with it. I was just happy the car's characteristics were pretty constant for all the racers. It would have been bad if the cars went from extremely loose at the beginning of the race, to handling well for the racers who raced them towards the end!

Re: NASTE @ Rapid Raceway on May 3rd 2014 - Race no.16 (10 replies, posted in NASTE)
You're right Chris, it was a good learning experience. It seems that traction on a routed track without any traction compound put down, is a moving target. We all now how unpredictable traction can be at TooBad Motorplex on any given Odd Thursday! It would seem maybe the same held true at Rapid Raceway. Last year when we raced the '55 Chevys on a similarly prepped Rapid Raceway, that is totally cleared of of any rubber or traction compound, the '55 Chevys hooked up better than the even had. This year, not so much! I suppose we could have tape cleaned the tires before each heat, but I would think if dust were the issue the traction would have just gone away before the end of the heat, leaving the cars somewhat unpredictable. Then there would also be the issue of the cars performing much better for the later racers as the track cleared up. For the most part at least the car's performance stayed pretty consisitant throughout the entire race for all the racers!
I heard a few comments from some racers about how they felt this car or that car was not as bad as some of the other racers said they were. I think it was all a matter of a racers driving style. Years ago I raced Aurora Thunderjet 500 HO cars with a very competitive club. We raced the cars basically in stock configuration. Those cars were very challenging to race due mainly to limited available traction. When I designed and built the first NASTE chassised cars (same basic design concept as we use now, only not nearly as well executed!) I built those cars for racing on my very short (approx. 30 foot lap length) 3 lane 1/24 track. I was looking for cars that would slow down the action and still present a driving challenge. I was surprise by how well the NASTE chassis cars filled that niche! They really were just like BIG Aurora T-Jets! Those cars were never designed for large tracks like Rapid Raceway. However they have been fun and popular every where we have taken them! So when you're racing the NASTE '55 Chevys remember, they are NOT supposed to hook up well!!! Some people just don't get that!!!.........And OH by the way, Dave Smith (the winner of the race at Rapid Raceway) was the T-Jet champion in that HO club I was speaking about!
