On Saturday November 4th Tom Susan N Tom Street held an OSCAR Late Model NASCAR race. Three of us headed over the mountains to represent PASER. My Jeep Wrangler (2 door model) was packed tight with three big, old guy racers and the racing associated gear, as well as the required overnight personal stuff (not much in that regard). We made good time on the highway and arrived with plenty of time for practice and car adjustments. This was not the first trip for two of us, but it was Tim's first visit to Tom's track.

Practice went well. Tim appeared to be getting the hang of negotiating the huge and difficult course. I was going to be racing Kirk's newly completed chassis which features some adjustable components for tuning purposes. Kirk spent quite a bit of time helping me get the car dialed in. A big thanks to Kirk for loaning me his best car, and helping me get it race ready! After a few hours of testing, practicing, and making adjustments we left for our hotel to get some rest.

Race day on Saturday started off with breakfast at Shari's where we met up with Tom, Curt, and Shaun. After breakfast it was a short trip back to the track. After the tech inspection and all the bribes were submitted, we started qualifying. Personally I never qualify very well but today was a little different. I posted my best qualifying time ever at Tom's. I qualified fifth with close to an 8 second flat time. Of course all the fast guys were half a second faster, but I was pretty happy with my time. "Curtious Curt" was the top qualifier (as usual).

After qualifying we all voted for the car we felt was the best looking and deserved the "Concours" award. Shaun (Monster Mayea) won the award with his beautiful number five Camaro. After the concours event it was time to set the starting grid. OSCAR races normally consist of four rounds of racing four minute heat races. This day due to diminished attendance, we would be racing five minute heats. With the hot motors run in OSCAR races, this change would prove to be very taxing on equipment, both cars and controllers.

In the first round of racing Tim experienced a spectacular crash, leaving the track, and landing on the cement floor. Amazingly his car suffered no damage and he was able to continue racing (a tribute to his excellent chassis build in Staurt's chassis class PASER held awhile back!). After repeated crashes into pretty much every wall, around every corner, I finally blew the pinion gear out of my car. Seeing as how I am really bad at pit work, after the first round I was down forty laps from last place, almost one hundred down from first!

In the second round most everyone settled down and improved their performance.

By the end of the race almost everyone had experienced some sort of problem. Curt had changed out two expired motors, Wade lost one motor and a set of gears, and Tom suffered multiple chassis issues. Two of the star performers were Michael and Shaun, but neither had quite enough to best Curt.

In the end it was an awesome race! Racing at Tom's World is always spectacular! A great time to socialize with fellow racers, and run on an extremely fast and challenging track! Thank you Tom for hosting this race, and a big thanks to Susan for feeding us (and allowing Tom to play with us!).

I know some people wonder what this whole Halloween Race thing is about. It is kinda hard to describe, and unless you have actually participated, it is pretty hard to fully understand...... In a nutshell it's about fun and food and challenge! In THAT order!

Attendees and participants will experience lots of laughter for sure, as racers attempt to negotiate the track with non-standard racing equipment!

Attendees and participants will not go away hungry! This year thanks to Monte, Victoria, Mitch, Chris, and Rico we had Pizzas, chicken, and potato salad. Dorothy supplied us with the overabundance of her delicious homemade candies (trick or treat!). Thanks to all of you for the food and treats! And a great big thanks to Howie for letting us use Rapid Raceway again this year!

Participants experience the challenge of first building a suitable racing vehicle. A slot car capable of negotiating the track, but expressing a Halloween based theme. You know, something scary, something silly, something appropriate for the occasion. This is one race where the builder decides what is appropriate for the occasion!....Oh, and your creation will need lights! Incorporating lights into your "build" can sometimes be quite a challenge in itself!

The race consists of one round of racing (four heats, one on each lane) in full light. The second round is run in darkness, hence the need for lighting onboard your race vehicle. You probably noticed I use the term race "vehicle" as opposed to "car". That is not unintentional, and there is an obvious reason!

This year we were again a little light on entries, but we did have two new first timers. As first timers Douglas and Hersch experienced some new challenges during the race. Douglas had to make some adjustments with torso amputation of one of his race vehicles occupants. Hersch experienced the loss of partial and complete skeletal remains from his vehicle. In his first attempt Hersch finished third overall and posted the fastest lap of the race. This year all the entries were still running at the end of the event (that alone can sometimes be a challenge!).

This is an event I think everyone should experience. The challenge of "the Build" brought me to the starting grid many times throughout the years! This race has been a NASTE cornerstone race since 1995! Mark your calendars for this race next year! I guarantee you will laugh and eat some excellent candy for sure!

This race has been rescheduled for November 4th!

OSCAR races have always been the premier 1/24 races in Oregon. The season opener is traditionally held at Tom Street's track in Bend, for the Super Stock Class. This year's opening race is scheduled for October 21st, but at this point in time it is looking like attendance may be way down. Right now we are only anticipating seven participants. In a discussion over the phone with Tom yesterday we wondered if switching the class to late model NASCAR might entice more racers. So I am posing the question here to solicit replies and hopefully gain some commitment by additional racers. If you plan to attend the race, or will attend if the class is changed to NASCAR, please let us know here, or send me a message, or give Tom a call. We will be assembling a list to establish an accurate headcount.

Thank you!   =======Bill

The NASTE 2024 Point Series Championship is upon us!

The current champion, Dan "Doc" Fritz is set to defend his title!

Let the challenge begin!

One of the issues with attending this event is race scheduling. We are lucky and unlucky in the amount of racing available in our area! Pretty much every weekend is scheduled with races locally! The weekend of November 11th is scheduled for the first race in the Northwest True Scale Porsche 962 Championship series. This is a big race for us here. Many local racers have cars for this event so turn out will be very good! I would love to be able to attend more races, but there is only so much time to dedicate!

As far as 1/24 slot car racing, we are spoiled in our area. We have what I believe to be the best 1/24 hardbody slot car racing in the nation, at a minimum. We have 1/24 hardbody cars that are very close to Flexi type cars in performance! The difference between the cars raced here locally and the 1/24 BRM cars is similar to the difference between 1/32 RTR cars and HO cars. The cars are not comparable in performance at all. So it boils down to what the racers enjoy the most and fast, good handling cars are addictive. Personally I like ALL slot cars regardless of scale or style, but as I get older I like racing our local 1/24 class cars the best. They are easier for me to work on, and I like the way they can be pushed hard and fast through the corners.

The 2024 racing season is officially on! We had a good turn out of drivers for the Even Thursday race on September 28th. After some of us met for a bite to eat at 3:30 PM, the doors opened at 5:00 PM. By 6:00 PM and time for the Womp race we had 8 cars on the grid. One of the new racers to fill one of those spots was Greg Watkins. Greg also races HO, and he quickly adapted to the Womps! Womp racing isn't for everybody, but it does provide some really close, competitive racing! Rob Enders was lightning fast as usual, and was able to stay in the lead until the checkered flag dropped. Here are the Womp race results (you can see just how close the racing was!):

1st Rob 109 laps
2nd Bill 109
3rd Kirk 100
4th Frank 98
5th Bart 97
6th Tim 95
7th Mark 82
8th Greg 79

As the Womp race came to a close and we readied for the 7:00 PM Flexi race, two more racers showed up. Jerry (Gearloose) and Ken Palfenier brought out their beautiful Can Am cars, ready for action! This was Ken's first visit to Inslot's Checkered Flag Raceway since it was moved from Bob McFarland's shop in Aurora. Ken adapted quickly to the new course configuration, and had he not suffered an equipment failure, I'm sure he would have finished higher in the field. Frank Lynn entered his brushless motored car. Although the NASCAR style body presented a slight disadvantage, the car showed real promise! It was extremely fast, and never got even a little hot! In the end it was Kirk Smith in the lead for the win. And just like the Womp race, the competition was close! Flexi race results:

1st Kirk 139 laps / 4.492 best lap
2nd Bill 139 / 4.360
3rd Gearloose 131 / 4.745
4th Bart 130 / 4.961
5th Rob 122 / 4.235
6th Tim 121 / 4.650
7th Frank 112 / 5.199
8th Greg 107 / 5.223
9th Mark 106 / 4.620
10th Ken 98 / 4.967

David Bond has a 3 lane wood oval track he would like to sell. Just the mdf part no frame, electric.

For more info contact David on Facebook, or send me a note and I'll get you in touch with him.

I'm happy to accept input on that.

Hey Smooth, I do get a few questions and comments regarding where to find information. I made a slight change to the wording under the Home Page link to "Race Rules". When someone clicks on "Race Rules" they will now see "Rules For NASTE Odd Thursday Races - NWTS and PASER Rules are listed in the Forum". Hopefully that will help direct them to the proper spot. For the most part a person just needs to know which group or club's race rules they are looking for. For example; for racing at Howie's Rapid Raceway, you need the Northwest True Scale (NWTS) rules which are listed in the Forum under Rapid Raceway's heading. If you happen to look under Northwest True Scale's heading the link takes you to the rules listed in Rapid Raceway's forum. PASER Rules are listed under PASER's Forum heading.

It doesn't seem that tough to me, but then again I am in here all the time!

To the top....
