For the June 8th race at Rob's Redline Raceway in Vancouver we only had 6 racers, so we raced on three of the four lanes with three turn marshals. This system worked very well on Rob's track.

Womps was the chosen class for the first race of the evening. We ran three minute heats for one round of racing (one time through all three lanes). The Womps run great on Redline Raceway! The flow of the course suits the Womps! Bob Nak and Doc tied for first with the computer settling the tie by total elapsed time to complete the round. Here are the Womp results:

1st Bob Nak. 113 laps 533.354 T-Time
2nd Doc        113       533.672
3rd John G.   110        530.419
4th Rico        110        539.263
5th Rob         95
6th Bill          88

After the Womps had rubbered up the track the Flexi Class cars hit the track. The Flexis are unbelievably fast on Rob's layout! My car is a bullet and corners like a cat! Although I had more than my share of crashes (self inflicted) I still managed to pull out a win. John was close behind in second. Flexi results:

1st Bill           198 laps
2nd John G.    194
3rd Rob          190
4th Bob Nak.   185
5th Doc           181
6th Rico          164

Congratulations Doc on winning the 2023 NASTE Championship!

Congratulations to Doc! The 2023 NASTE Champion!

I don't believe they are part of HOPAC. I met Tommy and Joel a few years ago after we had moved up here to Vancouver. They are fellow Vancouverites!

Yesterday the TooBad Motorplex 3 lane routed HO track left with its new owners. Tommy, Joel, and I rolled the track out from underneath Inslot's Checkered Flag Raceway and loaded it onto the trailer. When we moved here to Vancouver I built a new frame for the track using steel casters so I could store it under the 1/24 Checkered Flag track. Sadly the HO track had not been raced on since around 2007. It had been moved from the garage in our house in Fairview to the upstairs. From there it was moved to the garage of our house in Vancouver, and then into the shop. Despite the multiple moves the track was still in pretty good shape. The copper tape had lost adhesion in a couple spots, but the majority of it was still intact. All the wiring for the lanes, controller hook ups, and lap counter dead strip was still in place. The track featured inlaid steel wire for magnetic traction cars, and reversing switches for each lane. I hope Tommy and Joel enjoy the track! Maybe they will even host a race in the future?

Another fantastic race at Springwater Raceway! We ended up with a field of 11 racers. These 4.5 inch Flexi cars are an absolute blast to race on the Springwater Ogilvie track! We raced 4 minute heats, 4 times through (4 rounds), 2 rounds with NASCAR COT bodies, and 2 rounds with NASCAR truck bodies.

This race had it all! Carnage filled wrecks as well as some extremely close door to door racing! We destroyed bodies, bent chassis, and used up motors, but everyone was smiling and having a good time!

In the end the top four were (L to R): John G., Bob N., Gary T., Gary K.

On May 25th 2023 PASER held a Trans Am race at Inslot's Checkered Flag Raceway. I was pleased with the turn-out of nine racers, especially because it was a three day holiday weekend! I opened the doors to the track at 9:00 am. Racers started showing up as early as 8:15 am, many of them with breakfast snacks in hand! Once it looked like all of the participants had arrived we decided to go ahead and start the race. I had decided on a 4 minute heat 3 round format as an experiment to see how a somewhat shorter race would go. Once everyone had seemed to get enough pre-race practice we started the race. Start time was just before 10:30 am.

Nine racers allows for just enough turn marshals to fully cover the track, four racers with five turn marshals. The racing was very close, well except for Craig Reiland who came down from Seattle to join in the racing and lead the way to the checkered flag! Craig's car was just ballistic! Nobody could touch him! John Gill was the only other racer to come even close to Craig's lap times. John finished second with Al Christensen in third. It was very tight from third through fifth, with car issues decided many of the battles.

All said I think it was a pretty good race. We were finished racing by 2:30 pm. There was plenty of time for practice and tuning before and after the actual race. Personally I felt I had plenty of on track racing time. I would like to get some feedback from the other racers as to what they thought of the format, in regards to the amount of on track racing time, practice time, and the race start time as well as finish time. To me it seemed it was a pretty laid back atmosphere. Give me some feedback so I can start plans for next season!

There was a very good turnout of 13 racers for the Earnhardt / McFarland Memorial NASCAR race at Tom's in Bend on Saturday May 20th. OSCAR races are always great events, featuring a qualifying session followed by four minute heat races. After qualifying the field was broken up into two divisions, Xfinity group and Cup. The first group to race was the Xfinity division, made up of the bottom race seven qualifiers. Tom's track is one of the most difficult tracks I have ever raced on! I have yet to qualify in the top half, so I usual I raced in the slower division. Now although this sounds pretty dismal already, I will say that even racing in this lower division is quite challenging and fun! The racing was very close, and the finish results for the Xfinity race were very close to many posted by the Cup racers!

For this Xfinity race we raced 4 minute heats, for four rounds of racing or four times through. In OSCAR races the winner of the Xfinity race has the option of taking the Xfinity trophy or moving up into the Cup race. Korbyn won the race and chose to move up into the Cup race. Racers that make the move up are awarded the prestigious Iron Man plaque! That gave the Xfinity win to Stuart or Stew Meat as we like to call him, who was just 3 laps behind Korbyn. Here are the Xfinity results:

http://www.naste.org/members/bill/OSCAR05182023a.jpg

After the Xfinity race and a lunch break, featuring an awesome spread including pulled pork sandwiches, racers readied for the Cup main event! The race format for the Cup race was the same as the Xfinity race, 4 rounds of 4 minute heats. One thing to note is; this makes for 16 rounds or 32 minutes of racing for the Iron Man!

What makes Tom's track so challenging is the combination of super high speed sections of the track that include a 180 degree steeply banked turn, followed by two long straights connected by two tight 180 degree flat turns, one of which is referred to as the 'Dead Man". And if that isn't enough there is the tight infield section that also has a "hump" style bridge in it. This "hump" style bridge provides for some exciting "airborn" action if negotiated improperly! With all these exciting possibilities for "action", motor failures, breakage, and total car carnage is not uncommon! Such was the case for Bob Nak as he was the unlucky recipient  of multiple "rider" situations resulting in spectacular off track excursions! Bob set a new vertical record hitting one turn marshal in the head as well as hitting the ceiling, and a new distance record when his car landed in the adjoining pit area room. Congrats to Bob......I think?

For this race Curtious Curt was going for his tenth consecutive win. He was the top qualify but, his hopes for number ten were crushed by Tom! A motor issue dropped Curt to second place, just a mere four laps behind Tom. Here are the Cup results:

I'd like to thank Tom Street and all the folks in Bend for providing us with such a great race! Going to a race at Tom's is always circled on my event calendar! Many of us "veteran" local racers remember racing at Lee Dundas' barn track. It is considered an iconic track in our history of racing, and "THE" place where all the Northwest hardbody racing started! Sadly it is gone but, Tom's World is the new track icon! Don't miss out on being part of the experience! Mark your calendars for next year!

Even Thursday racing on May 18th included an IROC Race. Frank Lynn and Tim Booze provided a set of four (plus and extra running chassis) Ford GTs for the race. The cars were modified Parma I32 chassis with injection molded 1/32 scale late model Ford GT bodies. Powered by Falcon style motors the cars were very fast and quite challenging to drive!

Turn out for the race was slim with only 6 racers. A round robin racing format was used along with track calls for deslots due to the shortage of turn marshals. It was a fun race and we'd like to thank Frank and Tim for making this happen!
