Yesterday I was having an email conversation with Monte. It went something like this:

Somebody at the last race asked how many slot cars I have. I hear that one quite a bit, especially if they have just seen my upstairs room! Then somebody commented that now that I'm retired I should catalog all my slot cars. Tonight I gave that some consideration. After the first hour I started to wonder exactly what constitutes "a slot car". Does it have to be a complete car with a body? A complete ready to run chassis? A chassis minus the parts necessary to make it run? Then there's the scale issue. I have 1/24, 1/32, and HO cars.

So I thought I would post the question here. Assuming I have enough parts to complete a particular "partial" car, should it be counted as a "slot car" in my count? After starting in on this "assessment" last night, I realized there is a good chance that 1, I have WAY too many slot cars, and 2 that I may become overwhelmed in my realization that I am one sick puppy!

Here's some photos of my progress? Let me know if there is any interest in seeing any more.

December 3rd, 2015 Odd Thursday Night Racing-

It was a cold night, but the thirteen racers on hand helped to warm up the garage as well as the track. It was nice to see Ruben Guzman from Canada, as well as the usual crowd of NASTE racers. We started the night off racing the Trans Am class. Amy Fields took the unofficial win with her Nak-Spec Camaro. Unfortunately with the traction magnet in place she was not entitled to the official overall win, that win went to Bryan Trachsel. Bryan got that win by just half a lap over Gary Goose Gossett.

Next class of cars to the grid were the classic sports cars. Performance stepped up a notch in this class with the Division 2 allowed modifications of 8mm wide rear tires and/or motor pod-type or articulating chassis. Chris Kouba's Slot.it Ford GT40 proved to be the class of the field here, setting a new lap record as well as total laps in a 3 minute heat race. Rico Locati took the Division 1 win with his proven scratchbuilt Ferrari GTO.

After the sports car race it was time for the BRM Porsche 962s. The real question was what type of race would it be? As it turned out everyone, ok well most everyone raced in a very gentleman-like manner. Unusual for the BRM class! Chris Kouba drove to an impressive win! And lastly the Over 50 Class. Gary Goose Gossett has his Mystery Chassis car pretty well dialed in now, and it showed on the track. Goose took the win with a comfortable 3 lap cushion!

I'd like to thank everyone who was able to make it out for the race! And thanks for all the snacks! I'd also like to thank Chris Kouba for allowing us to run his 3 new BRM cars (Ferrari 512 & Porsche 917s) in a little IROC race to end the night. Oh, and for those that don't know, IROC stands for I Regret Offering Cars! Oh so true some times!

Al has named his track!

Welcome to Rippin' Ridin' Raceway!

Al's track is better suited to the BRM Porsche 962s with its wider shoulders/aprons. Al used dimensions of 7" for turn aprons based on the length of the BRM Porsches. I ran my BRM 962 around for a few laps and although it was a little loose it was a lot of fun to run on Al's track!

I made it over to Al's today to check out his new track. I must say I am impressed! Al did a masterful job building this track! It features beautiful stainless sheetmetal walls to keep the cars off the floor. Al used small colored paint dots to mark the lanes for a cool and unique look. The track features copper tape for electrical contact. The track surface is black laytex over a Rustoleum "Magnetic" Primer base, which provides down force more cars equipped with traction magnets. The power supply is variable and provides plenty of power for any 1/32 cars, as well as 1/24 cars! A Race Coordinator system provides lap counting and timing for the track through the use of a dead strip. This is going to be a FUN track to race on!

In the first race I entered with Hugh Ellsworth's modified American Line car, I completed 256 laps after two rounds of four minute heat races. I DNF'd in the last heat race with a broken lead wire. I was completing around 36 laps per heat, which if I had completed the last heat I would have completed roughly 292 laps for the race. My fastest lap time was a 5.061 second lap in the blue lane. I finished eighth out of eight, or more commonly known as DEAD LAST!

I entered the second race with nothing more than a new set of rear tires and repaired lead wires. I completed 343 laps with a fastest lap time of 4.890 seconds. An improvement for sure, but still only good for seventh place out of ten racers. But I finished and I wasn't dead last!

After the second race Howie invited me over for some testing and tuning. Help I very much appreciated! After three or four hours of adding, subtracting, and moving weight around, changing multiple sets of tires, and a motor swap to a Hawk 7 from the Falcon 7 I had been running, things were looking better! By the end of the test session I had my lap times down to 4.3 second range in the blue lane. Chassis changes included locking the front end down to eliminate any movement of the front axle, and side pan movement had be limited.

In the third race I realized two things right off the bat. My car was now competitive, but it was much faster than anything I was used to and I hard a very hard time keeping up with it. I could run with the quick guys, but only for a couple laps before I started losing control, usually resulting in crashes. But the car performed well! I completed 373 laps with a best lap time of 4.280 seconds. Good enough for sixth out of the eleven racers entered.

I have a couple chassis tuning mods to try for the next race, but mostly I need to improve my driving skills. I have made progress with each race and I hope to improve in the next race. To date Hugh's car has proven to me that even the "old school" cars can still be competitive, even after all these years of slot car development!

Happy Thanksgiving y'all!!!

The chassis mystery is solved!  It is a Vendetta '465' chassis, manufactured in 1965 or 1966. It sold as a bare chassis kit for $3.00 and was also available as a RTR.

Ooh, good point!

I don't know why, but it's just so much more fun with the BRMs!!!!

Oh yeah, and I set a record booting Kouba at least 10 times!!!! Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha,.....................truth be known, I think he lost more laps laying back waiting for me to initiate his "pay back"!!!!! Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.............................man I love that class!!!!!

As it turned out, last night was a record setting night!

In Can Am: Amy set a new Traction Magnet assisted record lap at 8.449 seconds.
Goose set a new lap record at 8.913 seconds and a race record of 58.1 laps completed.
Greg set a new USRRC lap record at 9.773 seconds and a race record of 53.7 laps completed.

In Over 50: Goose set a new race record of 54.7 laps completed.

Lists updated from Nov. 19, '15 race.

You guys are very welcome! I love the Odd Thursday Nights, I really have a good time!!!

Chris, I am extremely sorry for the times I may have gotten into you a little and bumped you out.................................................
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!!!! .............that even SOUNDS hillarious!!!!..........................
"gotten into you a little", "BUMPED you out", "SORRY"...........Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!!!!  I crack myself up!!!!!

November 19, 2015 Odd Thursday Night Racing - We had a great turnout with a starting grid of 16 for the first race. We also had the pleasure of meeting a new racer from the Portland area, Jeff and his daughter Jessica. We hope they had a good time!

First up was the GT Class race. The racing was very close with only five laps separating first through tenth. The top four all had fast lap times under the nine second mark.

The Can Am Class was the second race of the night. Although Amy again showed us all the way to the finish line, her win was recording as a N/C (non-conforming) which gives the official win to The Goose. Amy's Slot.it McLaren is super fast and Amy can get it around the track very quickly, which she proved by setting a lap record of 8.449 seconds (traction magnet assisted). Greg Petrolati finished ffirst in the USRRC Division of Can Am.

The BRM Class race. Holly poop through the fan Batman! The BRM race was brutal! There were absolutely no holds barred in this race! The race deteriorated to the point of red neck destruction derby standards! Nobody won, but The Goose did manage to complete the most laps!

After we all regained some composure, we raced the Over 50 Class. The Goose pulled off his third win of the evening, winning the Over 50 Class by two and a half laps! It was a good night for The Goose!

I'd like to note here that we have been experiencing a lot of DS Controller failures. I believe the problems arise when racers use their DS Controllers to run the Over 50 Class cars. Many of the Over 50 Class car's motors can expose your controller to much higher current or amperage than the 1/32 cars. We have seen multiple brake potentiometer failures as well as damge to the controller's circuitry. I would recommend using a controller specifically designed for 1/24 cars to run your Over 50 Class cars.
