Topic: PASER Open Track Monday @ Inslot's Checkered Flag Raceway in Vancouver

We started out the new year with some great racing here at Inslot's Checkered Flag! A big welcome to newcomers Dave Rothwell, Lee Dundas, and Gerry Kaady!

We had 8 racers entered in the first Womp race of 2022. Yes I said WOMP race! PASER has returned to their roots by starting their bi-weekly race program with a Womp race. We've actually been racing Womps for a few weeks now and racers have gotten their cars pretty well dialed in (with a great deal of help from Womp Master Dave Smith)!

The Womp racing format consists of 3 rounds of 20 lap heat races. Each racer races a heat race in each of the four lanes, once in each round. Racers are scored points for their finish position in each heat race. Points for each round are totaled to determine the overall winner (or in our case WEENER - weekly/winner).

Here's a new car Dave brought up from Woodburn this week.

Re: PASER Open Track Monday @ Inslot's Checkered Flag Raceway in Vancouver

The Monday schedule calls for a Womp race to start at high noon. This first Womp race involved some very close racing! The Womp races use a lap time break-out of 5.5 seconds. If you run a lap faster than 5.5 seconds, that lap is not counted. Setting up your car to run at that limit is the key, and easily accomplished as long as your car is built to the class specs.

Bob held the lead after the first round of racing by one point. Three racers ran laps in the 5.5 second range, but none broke out. The fastest laps ranged from 5.523 to 5.587. Rob came back to take the race lead after the second round, where three racers tied for the top spot of round two. In this round five racers were in the 5.5 second range, with the fastest laps between 5.529 and 5.578. Again no break-outs! The outcome of the race was not decided until the end of the third round of racing! After each racer completed a total of 12 heat races the winner had won by just 1 point! Second place was a tie, and third place was just 2 more points down. In the final round four racers ran in the 5.5 second range, 5.5o7 to 5.572, again with no break-outs! That is some close racing!

Here are the final results of the High Noon Womp Race:

1st Bill 40 points - fastest lap = 5.529 seconds
2nd - tie Bob 39 pts. - F.L. = 5.559 sec.
2nd - tie Doc 39 pts. - F.L. = 5.507 sec.
3rd Rob 37 pts. - F.L. = 5.566 sec.
4th Dave 31 pts. - F.L. = 5.539 sec.
5th - tie Brian 20 pts. - F.L. = 6.030 sec.
5th - tie Bart 20 pts. - F.L. = 6.014 sec.
DQ Mitch 14 pts. - F.L. = 6.105 sec.

Re: PASER Open Track Monday @ Inslot's Checkered Flag Raceway in Vancouver

After a short practice session the cars were lined up for the Flexi Class race. These races use a round robin format of 4 minute heat races, with one round of racing. The racing was yet again very close with the race ending in a tie between Bob and Doc. Bob was awarded the win by posting the best average lap time of 5.079 seconds over Doc's 5.117 average.

Re: PASER Open Track Monday @ Inslot's Checkered Flag Raceway in Vancouver

The PASER Monday schedule also lists evening races. This Monday we had enough racers on hand later in the day to hold a 5 PM Womp race. This second race was just as close and exciting as the noon race, with four of the six racers posting lap times in the 5.5 second range!

Here are the results of the 5 PM Womp race:

1st Dave Smith - 38 points - fastest lap = 5.546 seconds
2nd Bill 34 pts. - F.L. = 5.524 sec.
3rd Doc 33 pts. - F.L. = 5.500 sec. (dead on the break-out!)
4th Brian 27 pts. - F.L. = 5.751 sec.
5th Lee 23 pts. - F.L. = 5.550 sec.
6th Dave Rothwell 5 pts. DNF - F.L. = 6.014 sec.

Dave Smith, winner of the 5 PM Womp Race!

I got home and made a gear change on my Womp, I like it much better now, oh and another new body. We'll check it out in a couple of weeks.

5.500 Doc? have you been practicing for that?

Re: PASER Open Track Monday @ Inslot's Checkered Flag Raceway in Vancouver

You're welcome Doc, my pleasure! & nice job on the 5.500 flat!

What gear set did you end up with Mitch?

I went with 10/25 and found a nice Riggen Ferrari Can Am body that I didn't have to paint.

Now if I can do that for 20 laps

One or two faster than 5.500 would be fin with me Doc!

Re: PASER Open Track Monday @ Inslot's Checkered Flag Raceway in Vancouver

The racing at Inslot's Checkered Flag Raceway on Mondays is heating up! The high noon Womp race had 9 entries. We raced the now standard format of three rounds of 20 lap heat races to determine a winner. With points being scored for finish positions in each individual heat race, each 20 lap heat race is important. At only 20 laps they go quick and there's no time to hold back!

http://www.naste.org/members/bill/IMG_7935jan17.jpg

This race was to be another extremely close one, with each of the top six racers posting at least one heat race win! After the three rounds of racing Doc and Dave ended up in a tie for first place overall. Using the fastest lap posted to break the tie gave Doc the overall win by just .147 second. Here are the High Noon Womp Race results:

1st Doc 41 points with a fast lap of 5.574
2nd Dave 41 pts. 5.721 fast lap
3rd Rob 37 pts.
4th Bob 36 pts.
5th Bill 35 pts.
6th Brian 24 pts.
7th Gerry 20 pts.
8th John 19 pts.
9th Ryan 17 pts.

Congrats to Doc and yet another Womp win! He's adding a lot of fence posts to that PASER WEENER CUP!

Re: PASER Open Track Monday @ Inslot's Checkered Flag Raceway in Vancouver

The Flexi race followed the Womp race and proved to be just as exciting! In this race John dominated all through the round of four minute heats. He took the win with an impressive nine lap lead! Here are the results from the midday Flexi race:

John got away before we could capture him on film. He has a another fence post coming to him at the next race!

Re: PASER Open Track Monday @ Inslot's Checkered Flag Raceway in Vancouver

As it turned out we had a good crowd for the evening races as well! The PM Womp race had six cars on the grid. The track had tightened up some as the temperature and humidity had dropped from the earlier races. Half the field was posting lap times in the 5.5 second range, and the others were hitting 5.6 seconds. Doc has been a force to deal with in the Womp races so far this year, and he was on the wheel for this race winning all three rounds of 20 lap heat races! Here are the PM Womp race results:

1st Doc 40 points
2nd Bill 35 pts.
3rd Dave 32 pts.
4th Lee 30 pts.
5th Bart 26 pts.
6th Brian 17 pts.

Here's Doc sporting yet another fence post and some questionable ears!

Re: PASER Open Track Monday @ Inslot's Checkered Flag Raceway in Vancouver

The final race of the evening was the PM Flexi race. This time John wasn't around to kick our butts, so Doc decided to accept those duties! He spanked us pretty good, winning by eleven laps! The rest of us all finished closely together with only a few laps separating us. Her are the PM Flexi results:

Re: PASER Open Track Monday @ Inslot's Checkered Flag Raceway in Vancouver

PASER has always promoted the racing of "Hardbody" cars, model car bodies mounted on scratchbuilt brass chassis. The topic of adding these classes of cars to the Monday racing came up again. The one issue with this class of racing has been how to get new racers up to speed. Many times the newer members have never built anything like the hardbody cars raced in this region. Suggestions that came up in some of the recent discussions included starting off the racing with very simple design chassis. Something similar to the Hanna Econo-Car chassis design. A specification could also be implemented which limits the chassis brass pans to .062" material. The .062" material is much easier to solder than the typical .090" used on the more advanced chassis. Another suggestion was to develop a spec type chassis and motor combination and use Team Bluegroove bodies, which are .030" thick (closer to model car bodies than the typical Lexan bodies). There was also an idea to start the racing as s variation of the IROC style races. For example, the racers that have or build some cars would put there cars out on the track. Four cars could be chosen by random or some other method, to be used in the race. All of the racers participating would race those four cars in an IROC style format.

So, more input would be helpful in getting started down this road. Especially from you newer guys! If you have any ideas or comments, let's here them!

Re: PASER Open Track Monday @ Inslot's Checkered Flag Raceway in Vancouver

Why not use 4 of the naste  chassis that Zack made and use  blue  groove body? Scalesuto also has a chassis

The secondnidator

Re: PASER Open Track Monday @ Inslot's Checkered Flag Raceway in Vancouver

The 2NASTE chassis Zack made up with Team Bluegroove bodies would be a good choice, however the PASER club's roots are embedded in actual scratchbuilt chassis, which in my view are chassis built from wire and brass strip soldered together. There is already a venue for the 2NASTE chassis and that is Northwest True Scale, with races taking place at Howie's Rapid Raceway, Springwater Raceway, and here at Inslot's Checkered Flag. I'm not saying "no", I'm just saying that doesn't meet the current criteria.

Also to note, I am NOT doing a true IROC format where I supply four cars for IROC racing. I did that for years and have NO desire to start doing it again! If we run any kind of IROC style races, the racers will be also contributing cars to race.

As far as the Scaleauto chassis, they're ok for motors softer than S16Ds in my opinion.

Re: PASER Open Track Monday @ Inslot's Checkered Flag Raceway in Vancouver

Ok well sounds like we need another chassis building 101 class and build 4 cars.

Re: PASER Open Track Monday @ Inslot's Checkered Flag Raceway in Vancouver

That's a good idea Doc! Awhile back Stuart offered to help us with a class. Next time I see him I'll talk to him about it.

Re: PASER Open Track Monday @ Inslot's Checkered Flag Raceway in Vancouver

We had a good turn out on February 7th with eleven entries in the high noon Womp race. Ron came up from Woodburn with Dave and Brian to take a run at racing some slightly bigger cars than what will fit on his Viper HO track. It was great to see Terry and Lee make it out, and Mitch also finally made it back to the track for some Womp and Flexi action.

We raced the now standard 3 rounds of 20 lap heat races for the Womps. Each heat race is scored individually with points for first through fourth, so each heat race counts. There is no holding back in these short sprints! The better you finish in each individual race, the higher your total score. After three rounds of racing there was a tie for first place. In this scenario the racer with the quickest lap time through all three rounds, breaks the tie and is awarded the win. In this case Doc's best lap was a 5.501 second lap, which by the way is only .001 second from breaking out (losing a lap)! His fastest lap time was .010 quicker than second place!

Final results for the high noon Womp race:

1st Doc 46 points - fastest lap = 5.501 seconds
2nd Bill 46 pts. - fastest lap = 5.511 sec.
3rd Rob 38 pts.
4th - tie John 34 pts.
4th - tie Dave 34 pts.
5th Lee 29 pts.
5th - tie Terry 29 pts.
6th Brian 24 pts.
7th Ron 23 pts.
8th Mitch 15 pts.
9th Gerry 13 pts.

And here's your Womp winner (PASER WEENER)!

After the Womp race we lined up for the Flexi race. This was to be another close race with many door to door battles! The format for the Flexi races is a traditional round robin format with 4 minute heats, one round. Again Doc seemed to somehow stick with it and pull through to the win. What is up with this guy? Must be the beard thing!? Yet another squeak by victory, this time by just 3 laps!

Re: PASER Open Track Monday @ Inslot's Checkered Flag Raceway in Vancouver

By the time evening had rolled around some people had left and others had arrived. We gridded eight cars for the 6 PM Womp race. This time the goal was to keep Doc off the podium. It was not an easy feat! This time around Doc was edged out by just one point! The Womp races are very close, all the way up to the finish of the last heat race!

This Womp race was shortened to just two rounds due to a late start. Here are the results from Round 1:

7th Ron 12 pts.
8th Hersch 9 pts.

Re: PASER Open Track Monday @ Inslot's Checkered Flag Raceway in Vancouver

After the 6 PM Womp race the Flexis were on the grid for the final race of the day. This time that pesky Doc showed his skill again by returning to the top the podium! We gotta do something about this guy! He seems to be winning everything everywhere he goes!

Results from the evening Flexi race:

It was a great day for me as a track owner. The Open Track Mondays are a unique event. Participants come and go throughout the day and evening. Some come for the Womp and Flexi races, others come just for track time. On this Monday we met Hersch who is looking to return to slot cars after his experiences as a youngster. Ron who is a fellow track owner and member of PHOSAR participated in some bigger scale racing. Jeff and Stuart stopped by for some track time for practice and testing. Whatever the reason folks show up, I'm glad and appreciative of the fact they come! That's why we have these tracks. That you to you all!

Oh, by the way. That guy there off in the distance.....Yeah, he won three of the four races today! sheez..............

Re: PASER Open Track Monday @ Inslot's Checkered Flag Raceway in Vancouver

It definitely was an enjoyable evening of racing for sure despite my car issues.  I was encouraged by the improvement in my womp car, it's finally headed in the right direction.  Thanks to all for a great time especially our host.
