Topic: From our friends in Australia

I received this from Mel in Australia:

Hi Guys,
There is no law here in Australia for passing hints and tips to other countries.

Have purchased a new SCX Nascar Pro but need to set up on for one of our club races here in Sydney Sat Night.
Found the site below which look very helpful but any more tips would be welcome. There are a few arses I need to whip!

The track we are on is a new MIO painted surface with heaps of grip

Same design but routed and MIO Finish

This track is owned by Jim - one of our club members who is in a wheel chair (after a motorbike accident some years ago). Did everything himself.

Have communicated with Rico a few times and a couple of others. I have two cars in the International SCX Classic Rally.

Have a great time on the 19th Guys - wish I could be over there - one day.!

Regards Mel

Re: From our friends in Australia

Glad to have ya onboard Mel, we need more craziness around here and I think your the man for the job.

Rico

PS- that's a mighty nice lookin track- is that by any chance one that will be used in the SCX proxy?

Race cars are neither beautiful nor ugly. They become beautiful when they win.

What's MIO finish?

I guess I should have Googled it first.....

Seems like a great top coat for racing.

Micaceous Iron Oxide paint is used a lot for protection on steel but the guys here have found it handy for routed tracks for two reasons. 1. It sort of looks like a smooth bitumen (tar or what ever you guys call it) surface and 2. provide tons of grip. Sort of the roughness of 800 grade wet and dry (emery paper). Most coat it with a high to low build water or oil based clear. Bit of knowledge to get it just right.

Here it is with one coat of a water based clear

Hi Rico. No No No. It's meant to be a rally, not a round of the Le Mans or F1

Here are some pics from a round on my tracks used for last years Oz rally.

Re: From our friends in Australia

Hi Mel,

Great looking track surface with that MIO paint. I'll keep that in mind. I heard that flat latex paint makes a great finish to which urethane tires stick well but the little rougher surface of MIO makes it look like what the plastic track makers put out.

And you guys build awesome rally tracks over there.
