Bill- Yes, the 908 is the type of car with the pod.  I have no idea which is superior, too bad you don't have a track to try them on and get an idea of the performance between the two.  I'm just trying to avoid the Slot.it scenario where everyone ends up with an identicle car or where you have to go spend more $ every few weeks to keep up with the Jones'.  If they are fairly equal then I don't see why we couldn't race them.  I will need a couple of box stock car to compare and then let the group make a decision.

Well Bill- That was kind of the point of this whole thing was to find out what people wanted to do with this class.  I have recieved one email and that is it, but it had some separate issues.  By strict definition the GT40 and the 250LM would be out because they don't have the separate motor pod,  but I was afraid the car choices would be somewhat limited so decided to let the people make the decision.  I'm fairly sure the Ford would use the same motor as the others, but I'm not sure about the 250LM as it is quite a bit newer and may have a more powerful motor.  I would like to try a stock GT40/250LM against some of the other cars to get an idea of any performance differences.

Since I was put on the spot at the last race concerning the proposed Fly Classic class for next winter I have been doing some research and some thinking.  Yeah, I know, there I go thinking again, but this is what I have come up with:

Eligible cars:

Ferrari 512S- Any version, long tail (coda lunga), short tail, spyder even the Playboy versions if so desired.
Lola T70
Chevron B19
Chevron B21
Porsche 908/2, 908/3, 908 Flunder
Porsche 917K, 917LH (long tail), 917 Spyder, 917 Flunder?,  Please NO 917-10 CanAm style.
Any other Fly Classic car with the motor pod like the above cars that I may have missed.

To be discussed:
Ford GT40, Ferrari 250LM kit, Porsche Carrera 6.  These cars do not have the motor pod but are correct for the time period.  Let's talk about these.

Modifications:

Minor blueprinting of chassis and body.  ie light sanding for clearance issues.
Stock Fly blackstripe motor.  It is permissable to cut off excess shaft to avoid tire clearance issue.
Stock gear ratio only but changing brands is allowed. Ratio 11t pinion, 36t spur
No magnets of any kind (except in the motor for you smart asses and you know who you are)
Stock wheels at this time but this can be open for discussion
Converting stub axles to straight axles or bushing the stub axles with brass
Spec rear tire to be decided
Lead or brass weights are allowed
No exposed weights.  All weights must be inside chassis.
Any guide flag that does not require extensive chassis modification ie Slot.it for stock guide.
Any brand of braid and lead wire.

That's all for now- let's see some discussion

Howie that was a Slot.it brand 962 with an inline motor pod.  My sidewinder 962 did not feel as stable as the inline car.  I tried my Lancia LC2 and my McLaren F1 GTR inline cars and both of those were very good.

Gary Smith has a bunch of spur gears for sale

AJ and I have decided to give this class a try.  I have two chassis and related parts on the way.  We are still deciding what bodies to buy.  Being new to this kind of racing I would appreciate any kind of help regard gearing, ratio's etc.  I understand that Gary Smith has spur gears for sale, but I have no way to contact him.

Thanks

Thanks Howie and Bill.  I have been wondering about these items.  I'm curious as to why 3/32 and not 1/8 axles/bearings, any particular reason?

I tested my SCX NASCARs I had set up for the BSCC Summer Series at Marshall Field. On Marshall Field's Scalextric Sport Track my COT NASCAR was not as good as my older style "aero" NASCAR. However on the wood routed non-magnetic track, my COT car was clearly faster and cornered much better!

But it was not quite as fast as someone's "aero" car.  Hmm, I wonder whose that car was.......

Hey John-  Are running them stock with the differentials or modified with regular crowns?

Mike- In the past the Naste group has been running IROC style and each track owner supplied the cars and set the rules.  At BSCC (Beaverton Slot Car Club) we run two seasons a year, winter and summer.  Each one is run using a agreed upon style of car and rule set. You should be able to access the website from the links section here to get a peek at the current rules.  Once you get to the BSCC website, I believe the rules are under the link "other stuff".

Rico

I have been in contact with Dave Kennedy of SCX about these very questions.  We are free to tweak the rules slightly to fulfill our needs for the qualifying race.  Here is what he told me

QUOTE
Dave-
We (local club, Monte) are making plans to host a SCX qualifier and I have a few questions regarding the rules. Rules state that cars must use full windows and stock interior but then later state that any SCX interior tray may be used. Which is correct?
Additionally I have a question regarding tires. You encourage a spec tire, which I think is a good idea. Rules state that SCX Pro parts can be used and I would take that to include wheels. To the best of my knowledge the Pro wheels are sized differently than the stock plastic wheels. So, if we are to use a spec tire then shouldn't everyone use the same wheel or did you mean a spec brand, no matter the size?

Rico Locati (reek455)

Hello Rico,
Yeah, this was not one of my better rules to include in this... You can use the interior from any car but it must not be lightened or modified.

As a track host your club can modify the rules to suit the house rules, so if you want to ignore that rule you can and you can race the cars "with the original interior in an unmodified form" if that makes it easier.

The rule will you refer to will be eliminated next year.

I meant a specific brand of tire as well as a specific part number, but that part of the rules refers to the final race only.

The Pro wheels are a slightly different size so we had 3 different sizes of tires on hand for the race in Philly. You can choose to race whatever brand works best on your track. That's up to the discretion of the track hosts.

One of the problems is that the Corvette (with stock wheels) uses a different sized tire from the other GT cars (which, if my memory serves all do share a common tire size). So you can stipulate for your race a specific brand or exact sizes of tires if you choose to.

For the final race, there is only the Ferrari FXX, so there are only 2 choices (a third if you count the 16mm wheels) and Rich has a huge selection of tires on hand for that race.

DaveK

My own thought on this is to have everyone use stock wheels and a spec brand of tire to eliminate confusion and if we decide to use hand out tires the day of the race only two sizes would be needed.  I vote for IndyGrips based on price, performance and availability.   It was my understanding from the brief meeting at the last BSCC race we decided to trust each other on these matters.  Each racer is to provide their own car for the qualifier and their own FXX for the Nationals.
