Return To Pelican Park Speedway!

It had been one year since my last visit to Pelican Park Speedway. This trip was just a visit for me. Racing was not on my agenda. Walking though the door of the faciltiy is like stepping back in time! Nostalgic pictures, posters, and models are everywhere!

But let's start with what is new. The track is now in full use of a computer lap counting and timing system! Gone are the days of a manually operated timer and toggle switch for controlling track power! Now I was told that they had been using this system for years, but upon checking past photos (from just a year ago) I became aware that some peoples memories are no better than mine! The obvious indicator was the monitor mounted for the racer's view, which was not present last year! They even have a printer in use now!

But other than the computer system Pelican Park remains true to its roots! They still race the hardbody scratchbuilt brass chassis cars they have always raced. And the racers are still the friendly guys one always finds at the track. I had a great time visiting and catching up with everyone!

Proof of the computer system now in use!

The usual group of Pelican Park racers.

Flexi Race at Pelican Park - For Real!

Those familiar with Pelican Park Speedway in Eugene are going to have a hard time believing this but, on May 11th 2024, Flexi cars competed for the first time in over 30 years of active racing on this famous road course! Eleven racers form the surrounding area, and as far north as Vancouver Washington, showed up to participate in the traditional Pelican Park style racing format.

The race started with 50 lap qualifying heat races in a round robin style rotation. A point system was used to determine seed positions for the following brackets consisting of Semi's (The Fast Eight they call them), Consi's, The Hooligan, and of course the Main. For all the races after the initial qualifying heats, each racer drew a colored chip from the "rattler" box to determine which lane they would race in.

There was one run off race with the bottom (read last) two racers, to fill the final spot in one of the Semi's. The top two racers in each of the two 50 lap Semi's advanced to the Main. The bottom two in each Semi went to the Consi. After the Semi races were completed the bottom four racers were placed in the Hooligan. From what I can tell, "Hooligan" is Pelican for "Losers"! After the Hooligan, racers lined up for the 50 lap Consi race. Once the Consi race concluded it was on to the Main event to determine the race winner.

Overall it was an exciting day of racing! The pelican Park style racing format is different and a lot of fun! I'd like to send out a big thank you to Pat Hurley for organizing this race, and to all the Pelican Park members that made it happen! Rumours have it there may be a second race for Flexi type cars sometime this summer. Keep your eyes open for a date. It will be a race that shouldn't be missed!

John Gill and I made a return trip to Pelican Park for their Grand Sport Class race. Pelican Park Speedway is a facility every slot car racer should visit at least once! There is lots of history there! I'm pretty sure this is the oldest active 1/24 track in the state! If you ever have the opportunity to check it out do it! There's a bunch of really nice guys that race there, and their lap race format is a lot of fun!

Racing at Pelican Park on March 20, 2019

I was invited by Bob McFarland and Stuart Wall, to join them in a trip down to Eugene Oregon to participate in some Wednesday night racing with the Racing Rebels gang at pelican Park. How could I say no? We arrived at approximately 5:00 pm, early enough to get in some practice, and it was obvious I needed some practice! The racers at Pelican Park use a heat race elimination style of racing, very similar to what is used at the local dirt tracks. 50 lap heat races are used to set up semi finals, consolation races, and main event races, as well as a unique to Pelican Park bracket for the less than fastest racers. This lowest bracket is what the Racing Rebels call the Hooligans. An aptly named and appropriate bracket of racers! The bracket I can claim as my own with a third place finish. Ultimately what Pelican Park offers a slot racer is some outrageously fun and exciting racing, with a group of friendly competitive guys, and some good food! The apple pie in particular was delicious! I had a great time and I'd like to thank everyone for the hospitality! A special thanks to Bob and Stuart for letting me tag along!

Here's some photos of Pelican Park:
