Re: NASTE Odd Thursday Night Racing Rules & Current Thread

As usual, racing at Al's last night included fast close racing and some great snacks! We welcomed a new racer Zack to the field. Zack brings his RC car racing experience along and it served him well! There were many comments about how the the track was hooked up last night and it was reflected in the lap times and total laps for each heat race.

The first class on the grid was Trans Am. This is always one of the most closely fought classes every time it is raced. Last night was no different. Jeff won but by only one lap over Rico. Al was third just three tenths of a lap back, with Mitch just a mere six tenths behind Al.

Trans Am Results:
1 Jeff   67.1 Laps
2 Rico    66.1
3 Al  65.8
4 Mitch  65.2
5 Bill  64.0
6 Chris  63.1
7 Stan  60.2
8 Monte  59.2
9 Zack 58.7
10 Jake  55.5

Can Am was the class for the Point Series Race of the evening. Racers have been working to up there game and there were some awesome cars on the track, driven by awesome drivers! It was a tough race for some of us trying to keep pace! The top dog's finishes were knocking on the 80 lap door! The top five all broke the 70 lap mark, but Chris and Monte were clearly the guys to beat and led the way through the entire race!

Can Am Class - NASTE 2019 Point Series Championship Race No.5 @ Rippin' Ridin' Raceway:
1 Chris 78.9 Laps
2 Monte   77.0
3 Al   72.7 - Fastest lap to break tie
4 Mitch  72.7
5 Rico  70.1
6 Bill  68.6
7 Stan  65.3
8 Jeff   61.3
9 Zack  59.7
10 Jake  58.8

After the crowd cleared out a bit the Open Class cars were gridded up for a little grudge racing. This round Al was top dog, but just barely edged out Chris by one tenth of a lap! Both of the top cars were Slot.its!

Open Class Results:
1 Al 76.8 Laps
2 Chris   76.7
3 Bill   75.4
4 Mitch  75.2
5 Stan 72.2
6 Zack  68.1
7 Rico  44.4

Thanks Al for another night of awesome racing and food! Your smoked salmon is till the best in the west! Obviously that's why we call you MEAT!

Re: NASTE Odd Thursday Night Racing Rules & Current Thread

Yes indeed, thanks Al for my quarterly fix of racing slot cars!  It was a fun night back in the basement.  It was good to see everyone who was there and even better to see Bill getting back on the horse with his reporter coverage.

I've been very busy as of late, but I do miss the racing immensely and will even get my cars legalized for the new class changes sometime soon.  It was fun to get to stretch the legs of that 908 and keep Monte in the mirror.  The group has upped its collective game!

Until next time, thanks again!

Chris

TOMORROW!

Re: NASTE Odd Thursday Night Racing Rules & Current Thread

My box is packed and sitting by the front door. I even have my Carrera DTM packed for some testing. It was the first car to break into the 6s on my track.
It's getting some traction now. I've pulled out and tuned some cars with rubber tires on them and have been running the dickens out of them. Since I woke up with a cold Christmas eve our plans got postponed so between the three lanes I ran over 2,000 laps yesterday, some on autopilot and some as fast and hard as I could without coming out. It's a long walk around that track.

Re: NASTE Odd Thursday Night Racing Rules & Current Thread

Doc, those are factory.  I can probably pull one out of another Carrera car as needed.

Also have two sets of tires for you that fit the Scaley TA Camaro I'll bring tonight.

Re: NASTE Odd Thursday Night Racing Rules & Current Thread

What a great way to start out the new year racing at Rippin' Ridin' Raceway on January 3rd 2019. We welcomed a new racer, Kevin to the group, and then proceeded to thrash some cars!

The first class to grid up was GT. The basic rules of this class state cars must must have a roof and full fenders. Most cars fit into this class which makes it easy for newcomers. Initially NSR brand cars were not allowed in the class but, since the price point of NSR cars has come down and the cost of building a competitive car has gone up, the restriction was removed. The outcome of that decision is reflected in the results of the race listed below. Note that my winning NSR Porsche 917 was totally box stock. I took it out of the box, loosened the chassis pod and body mounting screws and raced it. It is running the original stock, treaded tires.

GT Class Results:
1 Bill   79.8 Laps
2 Al   77.1
3 Mitch  73.4
4 Greg  69.0
5 Rico  67.7
6 Jeff  67.2
7 Daniel  66.1
8 Zack  64.4
9 Monte 51.5
10 Kevin Lagassa  49.5

Can Am was the next class up and the night's race for points. Monte killed us with his awesome scratchbuilt Porsche 917. Al followed in second with Mitch finishing third.

Can Am Class - NASTE 2019 Point Series Championship Race No.7 @ Rippin' Ridin' Raceway:
1 Monte 77.7 Laps
2 Al   76.8
3 Mitch   73.8
4 Daniel  73.6
5 Greg   68.2
6 Jeff  67.7
7 Bill  67.0
8 Zack  65.1
9 Rico  63.5
10 Kevin Lagassa  58.2

How about a couple videos from last night's race?

Re: NASTE Odd Thursday Night Racing Rules & Current Thread

As a side note, after several racers left for the evening, the remaining six of us ran an open class where we set a new lap record of 6.22 seconds. It was a Thunderslot of course, However a couple of NSRs and a Slot -It during the evening were clocked in the 6.5-6.6 range, unheard of just a year ago. Whoever thought that 73 laps would be just good enough for a 3rd place finish?
I'd like to think we were finally getting the hang of this hobby, but it's probably just more rubber on the track.

Re: NASTE Odd Thursday Night Racing Rules & Current Thread

Here's my revelation after last night's race. After re-reading the rules for Can Am I came to the conclusion I could have raced my NSR Porsche 917 in the Can Am class...........CRAP!...........too bad for me that was the last Can Am point race!

Re: NASTE Odd Thursday Night Racing Rules & Current Thread

One more race with Le Mans class cars for points then it is on to GT3 Class races for points. My GT3 car SUCKS! My Scalextric Bentley GT3 handles terribly! Good news is it is SLOW!........So this afternoon I decided to take a closer look at it. After removing the body the first thing I noticed is the plastic rear axle bushings are not equipped with ROUND holes. The axle flops around like a 1/2 inch pipe inside 2 inch pipe. This definitely needs some work. After connecting the motor to my Big Boy power supply I noticed the motor pitch changing like Boy George's rendition of Karma Chameleon.....My initial thought was to throw this piece of crap away, but then I remembered I would have to buy something else, and this car was CHEAP.....After some consideration I decided to break the motor in and see how it worked after some run time. I took the motor out of the chassis and connected it to my Big Boy power supply. After three hours at 6 volts the hiccups and pitch changes were gone......Side note: there may have been just a little motor "work" done before the break in. With the motor break in done, tomorrow if I make time I will start to work on that rear axle setup to try and eliminate it swapping holes!

This is the Big Boy power supply. My friend Dana Denton gave me this power supply about 20 years ago. If I remember correctly his uncle had built it from scratch. I have never misplaced it, even in my recent move because the damn thing weighs about 60 pounds! It is not a variable power supply, but it has fixed outputs of varying voltages. It features a pair of large cooling fans to prevent it from overheating. I love it! Thanks again Dana - still using it after 20 years!
